You walk into a mom and pop store and see Earthbound for 20$, what do you do?

So lets say this hypothetical mom and pop store is for some reason uninformed at the price of this game and is a single business. Is it morally acceptable to purchase the game knowing full well the owner has no idea what it's worth?

Just bought 2 DC 4x memory cards for $8. Not official but that's robbery for me, if the seller is dumb that's their fault.

I'm not responsible for their profits so buying that game at that price is very morally acceptable

Also assuming they're not selling for less than they bought it for they're making a profit regardless

Isn't like available digitally already on Switch or Wii-U?

Why do you care about the owner being delusional about a retro game's sell through price, like lol why do you want them to jack up the price of a game you're interested in buying?

Do you /have/ to buy a physical version? what if you just want to play the game

morals lol just buy the game

I buy it. Why should I be bothered by artificial market value inflation if someone sells it for closer to what the actual MSRP was.

Wonder why they're selling an old SNES game in 2018 for $20 regardless of its rarity. Is it just the cart or everything, including the guide that came with it?

I still have my SNES Earthbound.

Yeah? If they have a business it's their responsibility to know the value of their products

I had no idea Earthbound was valuable, and I thought I was fairly up-to-date with the "holy grails" of videogames (Nintendo World Championships and such).

I never mentioned what I want or didn't want, I'm just curious to see what others think of situations like this.

Also, items have "worth" regardless if ones own perception of the item is low. For example, dollar bills are merely cloth and ink.

That's almost exactly how I got my copy of EB, only it was Goodwill, and it was 50 cents. It was around the time they started going online at the register to price match used game sales (2012, 2013-ish, I think) with sites like eBay, etc, so I got lucky that the person who rang me up didn't do so.

That said, its not my responsibility to remind them about pricing their shit.

I buy it. It isnt my job to make sure businesses price their merchandise properly. As a consumer my goal is to buy goods and services of good quality as cheaply as possible.

Uh...there is no moral conundrum here, they put the item on sale for that price. I'm assuming they have the ability, just like anyone does, to check what the game is selling for these days. If they neglect to do that, you don't hear any responsibility for informing them they are underpricing their own product. Also if they are selling it for $20 then they paid someone even less for it, which means whoever they bought it from was really the one getting ripped off.

I'd buy it. And as soon as the transaction was finished I'd say under my breath "Wow! I can't believe this was so cheap! It's normally hundreds of dollars!" as I left the store. Because if someone owns a video game store and doesn't do their due diligence with game prices, then that's on them entirely. I'm not about to see $20 Earthbound and be like 'Hey, that's worth a fortune, I'll give you $200 instead.' And besides that, everything no matter what it is, is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it so there is no morality involved.

You know, I actually did bring this up to a local game store I go to. Only because I go there regularly and some other retro game stores in the area have gone out of business before.

It wasn't earthbound but they had a Colecovision game that was WAYYY underpriced, and I even brought it up to the manager and asked if it the price was correct because of how much it normally went for online. He said "Yeah price is right; lucky you".

This actually happened to me a few years back, except it had a $10 price tag. Bought it.

Buy it and sell it to my friend for $100 when he gets his taxes. He just sold his copy and was very sad about it.

Buy it, no questions asked. If Mom and Pop can't do a simple Ebay search they don't deserve the money

Meh, they were happy to put up that price without my input, they'd be happy with the 20 I'd gladly pay. If I were to try and argue or haggle, then I'd feel way more of a dick, or advised them beforehand that 20 for a SNES game like that is "about average", but if they want to sell it at that, that's all them.

Kind of a weird price, honestly. It'd either be like $5 or $150. I doubt they only kinda get that SNES stuff is worth money.

Items have worth depending on rarity, you are getting something you can't get elsewhere authentically in physical form.

Trading cards can go up into the hundreds and thousands despite being mere paper and pink.
I mean even putting aside personal opinions on the whole idea of jacking up game prices and collector culture, from the store's perspective also, presumably they want to actually sell the item and they have an idea of what kinds of people come into their store, how often, how much they're willing to pay... Clearly they don't have a problem selling it for $20. Would putting it up for some ridiculous price really be beneficial to them in all cases?
