So I've been warned by moderators not to make any more individual american-european difference threads, but have been allowed one thread.

I thought it might be interesting if we talked about culture shocks we've all had when abroad, and to answer each other's questions.
----------------------------
I'll start:

Question: Hypothetically speaking, if I'm in Budapest right now and got in trouble with the law, and decide to elude bail and make a run for the Ukrainian border... Would I need to only look out for local police, or do bounty hunters also exist here in Europe?

Also, are bounty hunters here required to wear clothing identifying themselves as such?

Quick answer wold be appreciated.

Example of an American bounty hunter:

Culture shock: Poop Shelves. Germany, what's with the poop shelf? I stayed in this old hostel in Berlin, so I don't know how common these are anymore.... But the toilets at this place all had this shelf, where your poop sits. Why?
edit:

thanks to Tracygill for the topic idea ;-)

Am I to assume from the question in the OP that bounty hunting is a thing people still actually do in the US? As far as I know, that's not a thing in this part of the world. The only time I hear about it is from movies and video games, and even then those usually take place 300 years in the past or future.

Also about the poop shelf, I've never seen one of those. Not sure how common they are.

I honestly liked your threads, made me learn a bit about the day-to-day stuff in the US, mostly taking stuff for granted here after seeing the US equivalents.

Looking forward to other people's entries.

I have encountered "poop shelves" in Germany and as far as I know these used to be pretty common, but not for a long time.

Wait, are people supposed to poop on the duckling?
How do you clean it afterwards?
Eww

The toilet shelves used to be common, but you see less and less of them today. I actually like that your butt doesn't get sprayed with water when you use them. At the same time they can stink up the bath room fast because your shit isn't submerged in water until you flush

And wtf, there are still bounty hunters in the US? I thought the question was a joke first. I really don't like the idea of allowing anyone but the police to arrest people

As to my own culture shocks... as a German incapable of small talk I needed some time to get used to strangers asking 'How are you?' all the time in the US... cashiers, waiters, everyone. I know it's just courtesy and they don't actually want to hear about my mood. But come on, just let me order something in peace. "Hallo, einen Kaffee bitte" simple as that ;)

No bounty hunters, as far as I know, we're a civilised society over here.
Do you really enjoy the splash of toilet water on your fat American anus that much?

The American bounty hunter thing is weird to British eyes, not sure about the rest of Europe.

In the American TV series Sneaky Pete, there appear to be bounty hunters working with bail bond companies, so effectively this is a whole industry based on the cash bail system, underwritten by poor people, in the interests of keeping them poor.

We don't have cash bail in the UK so bounty hunters probably wouldn't be viable here. That's leaving aside the unacceptability of private citizens walking the streets with firearms.

i think if you're a civilian and you "hunt" and detain people you're gonna be charged by the law. so at least where i live there are no bounty hunter or anything like it

I was puzzled by the poop shelves as well when visiting Berlin. My shit would just get smeared all over the toilet and I had to clean it up after every dump instead of just flushing.
Get rid of the shelf Germany

I want to know a good explanation of why some French houses have the toilet separated from the shower AND the sink. Why would you go and shit/pee and not have a sink nearby? it would make more sense to have the sink with the toilet and not with the shower.

I lived in Budapest for a while and never realized they had Ukraine as a neighbor. Also, Russia is technically Europe so I guess you could find some bounty hunters there - specially to go to Ukraine.

I've seen the poop thing in old toilets in Lithuania, for my experience they help with flushing the shit down easier, because you will have the force of the water going down plus whatever speed it gets from that small - but important - leap. It also helps in not making water splash on yourself.

I thought the idea of the poop shelf was so you could examine your stool/see how healthy your digestion is? Germans... filthy.

Why would I go wash my face/brush my teeth in the toilets?!
To be fair, I see more and more houses now that have a sink/mini-sink in the toilets and one in the bathroom. Best of both worlds.

Bounty hunting still exists in the US only in very specific situations.

Basically, if you are in jail awaiting trial and cannort afford your bail for release, you can take out a type of loan called a "bail bond" to pay your bail. You get this bond from a bail bondsman; basically, they pay your bail for you, and then you pay them back (with interest, of course). Since the bail bondsman paid your bail, they are considered at least partially responsible for you. If you skip town, then I'm pretty sure they're on the hook legally in some way (I'm not sure to what degree, this is the part I'm fuzziest on).

Basically, the bounty hunters work for the bail bondsman. For a percentage of the value of the bail bond, they will track you down and bring you back to the jurisdiction in which you are standing trial. At that point I assume the bail bondsman could probably come after you in court to recoup the bounty hunter fees as well, but I'm fuzzy on that part too.

Someone with more legal knowledge could get into more detail, I'm sure, but that's the rough gist of it.

Bounty hunters aren't really a thing here AFAIK. There is the European Arrest Warrant though, which (I think) enables local police forces to arrest and detain someone, regardless of which country they are actually wanted in. (Someone elaborate on this though, please, because I only vaguely know what its about)

Good point. I dont get why not have one place for all of it, though.
I live alone, I have the shower/sink/toilet in one place, it's fine by me.
Living in a family of 4 during my youth with only one bathroom, it would have been awful to have to wait to use the toilets when everyone decide it's the time to shower. It was already a pain when someone else was using the toilets when an emergency comes.

Yes, there's a scene in Malcolm in the Middle where Lois and Hal discover that what they thought was just a store room was actually a fully functioning spare toilet. They quietly agree to never mention this to the kids.

Honestly anybody who has ever been forced to share a single household bathroom/toilet with younger people knows what that's about.

So OP has gone from "daily thread about questions I could google myself" to "how do I escape a country's law" ?
That escalated quickly.

Soon : "European jail meals are more delicious than American's ones"

Please don't presume like that. I'm no law breaker, but I find the notion of bounty hunters with enhanced rights of access to property rather frightening. Might I suggest that all people should too.

I was just playing with the fact the for the first time, OP asked for "a quick answer". Regarding this specific topic, I didn't have to presume much ^^
Also I'm European and the bounty hunter notion totally eludes me, I don't intend to offend anyone obviously.

We'll you just cast serious aspersions on a fellow poster. I don't know this person, you don't either.

Bounty Hunters like barely exist even in America. The only ones I know that aren’t legal are just the ones that are hired to go on people who skipped court. Like a private Marshall.
