I love how a thread about someone's gender indentity is just imidiately derailed by people not getting it again. It's a nice sweet thing and it's awesome someone is embracing both sides of their personality and being real to themselves. You don't have to get it.

This exactly. This is wonderful news and a great example to others who want to embrace an identity that feels right.

i thought so to until i read further in the article

but at the same time, i dunno if Billy is saying exactly the same thing as people think he's saying
He is quite literally saying what the OP stated.
"You see I say 'himself' and 'herself', because I also see myself as feminine as well as masculine," the actor later added. "I'm a very soft person. I'm not afraid to show that side of myself."
Please stop with this

What is this even supposed to mean
context: billy d has been a beer salesman for a long time (recently reupp'd his contract), has been ribbed for it from og sw fans since forever, beer = a fluid, op's title includes 'fluidity'. would the joke have hit better if i wrote 'billy d moves from one fluid to another'?

You should probably just stop making jokes about it

Please do not question the gender identity of others as this is both insensitive and offensive. Posts like these make the forum an uncomfortable and thus unwelcoming place, especially for trans and NB members. If you choose to take part in this conversation, please be thoughtful in how you do. Posts that dismiss a person's identity will be moderated as necessary.

Y'all need to stop trying so goddamn hard to make initially feel-good threads into thread-backfire misery. Shit like that is essentially just trolling.

Some very odd ducks quacking again in this thread. Odd to see.

On topic: I have always loved Billy Dee Williams. I'm stoked to see him on screen again in The Rise of Skywalker and if he ever wants to do an interview with me I'll gladly oblige.

Billy Dee Williams: 'What the hell is gender fluid?'
An interview with the 82-year-old actor blew up the internet, but he says his remarks were misinterpreted
"But what I was talking about was about men getting in touch with their softer side of themselves. There's a phrase that was coined by Carl G. Jung, who was a psychiatrist, who was a contemporary of Sigmund Freud, and they had a splitting of the ways because they had different ideas about the … what do you call it? Consciousness. Unconscious. It's collective unconsciousness. But he coined a phrase that's, 'Anima animus.' And anima means that is the female counterpart of the male self, and the animus is the male counterpart of the female.

"So, that's what I was referring to. I was talking about men getting in touch with the female side of themselves. I wasn't talking about sex, I wasn't talking about being gay or straight. People should read [Jung]. I mean, it would be an interesting education for a lot of people."

I dunno, that quote doesn't seem to imply or base any sort of personal identity or gender statement.

Sounds like a basic response to be inclusive, not necessarily the point of OP
Well see you when your ban ends in two weeks because you had the misfortune to correctly interpret what he meant.

Also, Billy Dee is right, people should read Jung. Especially the fans of the Xeno series (Xenosaga in particular).

I mean, I understand the moderation wanting to be sensitive about this but it turns out he was right?
Oooph, this is why I stayed out of the thread. I thought he was angling towards inclusion, too, not so much him identifying as nonbinary. That said, his take is still excellent, both the original and his clarification.

The ban on the previous page seems a little odd after the clarification from Billy in the follow up article. I understand wanting to be clear and sensitive to the issue, but the posters interpretation seems to be correct. May have jumped the gun on that one.

An update to the op would probably help as well considering the original source felt he was misquoted or misunderstood.

I think it's understandable his initial comments were taken as being about gender fluidity; the author of the original article even claims he brought up gender fluidity with him.

Esquire said:
When I point out that Donald Glover talked about that type of gender fluidity when playing a young Lando in 2018's Solo, Williams lights up. "Really? That kid is brilliant—just look at those videos,"

But he also calls himself a "boy" in the same article.

Esquire said:
"What I presented on that screen people didn't expect to see. And I deliberately presented something that nobody had experienced before: a romantic brown-skinned boy."

So... it may have been reasonable to assume he was really just talking about his feminine side, and not his identity. However the way he describes it is pretty damn close to gender fluidity / modern pronoun usage and all that.

Either way he is one cool person.
