The New Pornographers - Mass Romantic. Sheer perfection from beginning to end. This will always be a pick me up album for me.

Elliott Smith - XO. In many ways the exact opposite of the album above, this is my favorite album in a catalog full of masterpieces. By the time I reach the final track, I'm near an emotional breakdown but wouldn't have it any other way.

Andrew Bird - Noble Beast. I connect better emotionally with this than his other albums, from the musical ingenuity to his playful use of wordplay (many made up). Effigy and Tenousness are peaks but there are no valleys to be found.

Honorable mentions:
Neko Case - Middle Cyclone
Jimmy Eat World - Clarity
Pearl Jam - Ten
Third Eye Blind - Self Titled
Nada Surf - Let Go
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue

Stereolab - Dots and Loops (my favorite album for over two decades' running)

Madvillain - Madvillainy (JUST REMEMBER ALL CAPS WHEN YOU SPELL THE MAN NAME)

GRUM - Heartbeats (beats out Daft Punk's Discovery because Veridis Quo and Something About Us are are snoozers don't @ me)

Mansion - Attack of the Grey Lantern

Simple Minds - Acoustic (Kinda a cheat as a redone best of, but it's fantastically done)

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds (Honestly, I know many prefer the typical Oasis big hitters, and I'm a big fan, but I think I prefer his solo output nowadays and his debut hits a lot of good notes. Everybody's on the Run is immense loud on a decent speaker setup)

TV on the Radio - Seeds is probably my favorite album of all time because of how consistently good it is throughout and how much emotion is behind it. It's a masterpiece, imo. A real journey through loss and acceptance from start to finish.

Deftones - Diamond Eyes
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
Radiohead - Kid A

This is assuming I have to differentiate between artists of course. I'd never get tired of any of these 3 bands. This is arguably the cream of their crop.

Half of my library is narrative concept albums that seamlessly blend one song into another, so... yes. My list is the word "yes."

If you don't mind, I'd love to get a couple of recommendations of your favorites. I always dig a good concept album.

On topic:

There a bunch of "no skip" albums. Off of the top of my head:
Alice in chains - Unplugged
Nirvana - 1)Unplugged; 2)Nevermind
Neil Young - Live at Massey Hall 1971
Pink Floyd - Animals
Beck - 1)Odelay; 2)Mellow Gold
There are multiple Beatles albums that would fit.
Yes - 1)Close to the Edge; 2)Fragile
The Clash - London Calling
Most Grateful Dead live albums

There are more if I spent some more time thinking about it. I'm not sure how people are able to pick favorites in this kind of situation. These are all great albums and picking favorites would just depend on my mood at the time.

Oh I'll give you recommendations alright:
  • Roger Waters - Amused to Death / The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking (not my favorite, but I suspect you'll enjoy this one)
  • Brian Wilson - Smile
  • ELO - Eldorado / Time / Out of the Blue
  • I Monster - A Dense Swarm of Ancient Stars
  • The Megas - History Repeating: Blue / History Repeating: Red (a fantastic repurposing of Mega Man 3's soundtrack)
  • The Mountain Goats - All Hail West Texas / Tallahassee / We Shall all be Healed
There's also more obvious stuff like Pet Sounds and every Waters-era Floyd album, but I'm sure you've heard em.

Illmatic - Nas ; short, but powerful. I can listen to this most any week.
Kind of Blue - Miles Davis; first jazz album I ever listened to that I can still listen to start to finish, usually in the colder months.
The Sheperd's Dog - Iron & Wine; not a huge I&W fan, but I just really dig all the tracks on this album.

Recently added:
Bandana - Freddie Gibbs & Madlib; rap album of last year with no bad tracks IMO

Gojira - From Mars to Sirius (amazing band live too)
Hands down the best live band I've ever seen. The energy they bring is unreal, and they're so friggen loud.

My top 3 no skips are:
Colors - Between the Buried and Me: The entire album is one single song broken into tracks. Think Dark Side of the Moon but Prog Metal.

Blackwater Park - Opeth: From heavy as hell to haunting mellow tracks, this album is perfection from T to B.

Crack the Skye - Mastodon: Great concept, amazing musicianship, and some really groovy riffs. My favorite Mastodon record

It's real hard to only pick three.

  • The Mountain Goats - All Hail West Texas / Tallahassee / We Shall all be Healed

So good. All Hail is a lo-fi masterpiece. I played The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton for my wife a few years ago and she was stunned by its beauty.

"When you punish a person for dreaming his dream
Don't expect him to thank or forgive you
The best ever death metal band out of Denton
Will in time both outpace and outlive you"

Jeff Davis County Blues' calm, lonely resignation always hits me hard.

Everything Darnielle made prior to Tallahassee is a lo-fi masterpiece. There is not a single album, EP, or cassette prior to 2002 that I wouldn't recommend.

Rilo Kiley - "The Execution of All Things"
Leonard Cohen - "New Skin For The Old Ceremony"
Bright Eyes - "I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning"

I have nothing to add. I love all the songs on these albums. I have a lot of albums I feel this way about though but these just came up first. I could have done 10.

He's a great storyteller. Yes, I even liked his fiction novels. And the Mountain Goats podcast.

Probably could list a bunch, but go with some metal albums that influenced me the most I suppose.

In Flames - The Jester Race
Iron Maiden - Somewhere in Time
Metallica - Ride the Lightning

Metallica got me in into metal, and I guess either RtL or MoP could've been chosen here, but think I still listen to RtL the most. I probably would've put Megadeth's Rust In Peace here, but I hate Dawn Patrol.

Somewhere in Time was one of the first full Maiden albums I had and still remains my favourite. It doesn't have my favourite tracks, but I think it's their best from start to finish.

In Flames best days are long gone, but they got me into the more extreme stuff, and The Jester Race is perfect. Maybe could've put Colony here, but I do skip Pallar Anders Visa, if only because it's too long and it makes a much better transition the moment the acoustic guitar bit ends.

Feels wrong just listening three and leaving off so much.

Radiohead - OK computer
Janet Jackson - Control
FKA twigs - LP1
Kate Bush - The Dreaming
IU - Modern Times

These off the top of my head. I'm sure there are a few more I can't think of.

Gojira - From Mars to Sirius (amazing band live too)
Mastodon - Emperor of Sand
Devin Townsend Project - Transcendence

Solid list, fam. From Mars to Sirius and Emperor of Sand are especially great imho.

If I were gonna go for a full-blown metal top 3, I'd probably replace Townsend with, Isis' Wavering Radiant or something, but still...

So many great mentions in this thread. Anyone saying My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Sonic Youth, or Stereolab is not wrong
Raekwon - Only Built for Cuban Links
Deltron 3030 - Deltron 3030
Misfits - Collection 2
No Use For a Name - Leche con Carne
DJ Shadow - Introducing
Nathaniel Merryweather - Lovage
Pinback - Pinback

Also a hot take:
Adam Sandler - What the hell happened to me

DJ Shadow's Endtroducing turned my world upside when I first heard it in high school. Such a great, timeless album that I'd recommend everyone hear at least once in their lifetime

Talk Talk - The Colour of Spring.

Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden.

Talk Talk - Laughing Stock.

Simply album perfection from the much missed Mark Hollis (I'll add his solo too) and co. Each time I put one of these LP's on I'm mesmerised from start to finish.

Thanks for reminding me about Talk Talk. I went through this thread yesterday while not quite what to listen to on a quiet Sunday afternoon. This was definitely the best recommendation I could've received. The only albums I felt ever came close to matching what Talk Talk were doing here was Bark Psychosis' two albums, though quite unique in their own way.

My personal Top 4 (in no particular order):

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven

S.P.K. - Leichenschrei

Brian Eno - Another Green World

Boards of Canada - Music Has the Right to Children

There are more albums that I listen without skipping songs than I do skipping. Anyway, my list:

Pink Floyd - Wish you were here:
Flawless album where all songs are top tier and very different from each other. Every song here is a classic.

Genesis - Selling England by the pound:
My favorite album from them, very delicated and tight structured songs. It has two of my favorites solos (one of FoF and another in Cinema Show)

Porcupine Tree - Deadwing - my favorite modern album, one of my favorites from the band. I love every song here too.

Most concept albums I listen too.

But I usually don't skip songs when I am listening to an album anyways, if I listened to a complete album anyways.
