You all think they are lowering their quality for no reason? Why don't you search the internet for "slower internet speeds" or cruise a big ISP's forums and see all the people talking about how much slower their internet is with the usage being up in their neighborhoods.
It's REALLY bizarre that you all are essentially calling it a hoax. Its not... These companies have more to lose, than they do to gain by doing this. Its legit out of necessity.
They've obviously got thier internal metrics and are in touch with government and providers, they don't have to make this publicly available, fact that it's a cross company initiative shows it's quite obvious that load on services has gone up exponentially and infrastructure is being overburdened. The internet is a lifeline, it's fundamental to how we manage ourselves through this uncertainty, they're not going to take chances and do whats they can to avoid outages. Reducing quality seems sensible, it's simply not important during a crisis.Netflix, YouTube, and Sony have all announced changes to reduce bandwidth demands. Have any of them put forth any evidence that bandwidth use will outstrip capacity at any point in the next year?
Little ugly children won't notice so there's no sense wasting hi def on little childrensTheir thinking is that most people are just too lazy to change it back, or most likely won't notice. A lot of the people watching youtube do it while they start a video, put the phone in their pocket and let it run. Or listen to music.
If you're a user that actually watches videos, you'll just click on the setting to put back the video to the quality you want. There might be an addon for that, but really it's not a big hassle to change it back.

I'm honestly a bit surprised that our Internet infrastructure is this fragile
Exactly. If Youtube can cripple our Internet it has far bigger issues that need addressed.

The problem has been with us since the 80s, we solved it this last decade but most hosts and isp can't be bothered to use the tech or figure out how to implement it properly.
We suffer cause they rather earn profits and do nothing until the situation hurts them.
Grasp for those straws! lolExactly. If Youtube can cripple our Internet it has far bigger issues that need addressed.

most people wont change the settingsIf you can still switch back to HD, what's the point? People will just switch and the bandwidth problem will continue.
Still a good practice though.

It says it will default to SD. You can still change it to HD manually.
Through a tiny straw like the rest of us.
Or you can use ImprovedTube for Chrome! It auto sets to whatever you select!
Is there a setting or web browser plugin to force everything back to highest quality?

The backlash towards OP is a little much.
There's no shame in watching your YouTube Vida in high quality
We could see less bickering against people who are at least trying to mitigate a global pandemic. Fighting about inconsequential things sounds like the least of everyone's problems.I can tell you that in the middle of a global pandemic your dumbass YT queue is the least of everyone's problems.
