So, is there a general verdict on what Ys 8's PC port is like at this present point in time? Recent Steam reviews are... Incredibly inconsistent on the matter.

Apparantly so is the performance. Some people can play it with only the occasional issue and for some people it goes belly-up early and often. (in which case the best option is to request a refund since NISA dropped updates last August)

I finished The Oath in Felghana and i was *really* good. It might be the perfect Ys formula for me. Though I am very glad that I played Ys III first, seeing that game remade was really cool, and seeing how similar it all is while obviously being much better was really impressive. It's a great game

I'm going to play Origin next. Before starting to play through these all this year the only games I had finished previously were Origin and Ys I, but that was like five years ago so I don't really remember that much, so I am very much looking forward to it (though I'm only going to play through as one character because I still got a ton of games to get through)

My ranking goes like this now and I think it's gonna be very hard to knock Oath from the top (I also movied V before II because the more I think about it the more I live V and the less I like II):

Ys: The Oath in Felghana (PC)
Ys I (PC, Chronicles+)
Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys (PC Engine)
Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim (PC)
Ys V (SNES)
Ys II (PC, Chronicles+)
Ys III (SNES)
Ys IV: Mask of the Sun (SNES)

I played Oath first but prefer Origin (if only slightly). I just like how streamlined it is, what it lacks in side content it makes up for with constant action.

But yeah, those are still the best Ys games.
I doubt I'll ever play 8 tbh.

Replayed Ark of Napishtim (my first ys game) on steam over the weekend. Last I played this was over a decade ago on the PSP with those god awful load times. I forgot how charming this game was, made better with Xseed's tweak that essentially eliminated all the constant backtracking.

But yeah, those are still the best Ys games.

I want to at some point but I am apprehensive over the bad rap of the PC port, I'm not interested in the switch version either.

It's just a mess all around. I'm not going to support their bad PC port. I don't buy console versions of bad ports because that still rewards them for the shitty port and I don't even have the game on the platform I want to play it on. I was thinking about buying it used but the prices went up instead of down. The Switch version seems a little better in terms of price but doesn't run well. So I'd rather just not play it.

NISA completely botching this basically killed my interest in future Ys games (doesn't help that I'm not crazy about Seven or Celceta either). I won't be surprised if they kill my interest in Trails too.

8 on Inferno is the best game in the series. It's just nonstop chaos in the boss fights due to the enemy speed boost.

Based on max difficulty playthroughs *idk wtf the series is like outside of that tbh*
8 > 2 > Origin > Oath > Seven > Celceta > ys1 > Ark

If this was back in 2007, I'd probably swallow the bad ys VIII port without complaint in hopes of better in the future. Hell I bought all three of those bare-minimum effort "remakes" Bandai Namco did of Legend of Heroes III - V (those were fucking awful) to get Trails in the Sky... some years later. Fortunately I know better now.

Sounds like NISA spared no time in eroding XSEED's efforts to raise the ys/LoH series out of obscurity in the west. Remembering some of their past work I can't say I'm shocked.

I liked it more mechanically, mostly because it just feels like a more refined version of of Oath. But that game only taking place in Darm Tower is what makes me still put Oath above it. I love the town and the characters and the world of Oath, and think the overall story is more satisfying too. Origin is really good, but it feels so stripped back in many ways. Though I only played as Yunica, so there's a big chance that there is a lot I'm missing out on by not playing through with the other two characters

I think Origin has my favourite soundtrack, though.

Anyway I'm playing Seven next which I've never really touched before, but it was the game that got me interested in Ys to begin with. When I first got my Vita I fell in love with it and wanted to play everything on it, and at the time one of the games people seemed to recommend a lot was Ys Seven, but starting a game at it's seventh entry seemed insane to me so I went back to the first game and Origin and then got distracted and never got around to Seven. But now, like six years later, I've finally made it!

Here's my updated rankings:

Ys: The Oath in Felghana (PC)
Ys I (PC, Chronicles+)
Ys Origin (PC)
Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys (PC Engine)
Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim (PC)
Ys V (SNES)
Ys II (PC, Chronicles+)
Ys III (SNES)
Ys IV: Mask of the Sun (SNES)

The other characters are prettttty sweet. Some people don't like Hugo's playstyle, but the 3rd character is so fun. I highly recommend additional playthroughs with those characters. It helps to round out the story as well.

VII was my first party based Ys game so I was apprehensive about it, but I ended up loving it.

I'm really not enjoying the combat in Ys Seven. It just feels so spongey and unsatisfying. I'm only four bosses or so in (just got to the desert area) and it's really felt like a slog. It's a bummer because I was maybe looking forward to this game the most.

Keep going. The combat revolves around powerful skills and I found that you don't get many good ones early. I felt the same way when I started it.

Played Ys Seven right after Ys I, II, Oath, Origin and VI and hated it. Got so addicted to classic Ys that the new party based gameplay and lengthy campaign just felt like a slog.

Celceta made me turn around on the new combat system abit. I still prefer the original style but I think Celceta did more to pull me in. Pacing felt better and the combat faster and with more hooks like bonuses for finishing enemies with skills, flash dodge, etc.

Looking forward to VIII while fearing the localization downgrade, going to wait for it to go down in price. Xseed just does amazingly charming work.

The updated localization is fine, and not a downgrade. Personally I found stuff like everyone having names like Mishera, Mustafa, Cruxie, etc to suddenly Steve Johnson, to be more annoying in a translation, than anything in Ys VIII. Every time one of the NPCs had a character name like that it just made me roll my eyes hard. It just pulls the character out of their world so hard to me.

I've been kinda just ignoring skill up until this point because the combat has been relatively easy and I don't understand why some unlocked skills are blacked out and I can't equip them and haven't cared enough to see why

I'm not going to give up. I feel like if I can get through Mask of the Sun and even Ys II I can get through anything. I was not fond of those games

skills in SEVEN are similar to the skill system of Final Fantasy IX; they're tied to your weapon, you need to level them up one level to be learned permanently

Ys Seven has really killed all of my momentum playing through these games. I've come around on the combat and I'm having fun, but it's just so fucking *long*

I'm only about halfway through (I think, anyway) and I feel like I've done everything and nothing all at once

Almost done with Ys II. What the hell is this creepy achievement you can get for pushing a kid you're escorting into a wall?!

Adol got retconned into a sleazeball. I guess he grows out of it, though.

A web ad for Ys IX was uploaded a few days ago, surprised it hasn't been shared yet in this thread:

Though I guess there isn't much to go one there. Did we already know the date of release would be September 26th?

EDIT: and here's the game's boxart if you haven't been keeping tabs on the thread in Gaming:

There were a few more videos posted showing characters doing their unique field actions, I'm surprised I didn't see it brought up at all. Also, I'm pretty sure it was just for demonstration purposes but there was only one character out at a time. It's be interesting if they decided to go the Tokyo Xanadu route and only have one character active at a time, or at the very least let you adjust your party size from the get go instead of making it a post game unlockable sort of thing like Ys VIII.

The Vagullion boss fight in Ys I and II Chronicles on PSP can go get fucked. I don't know how people complain about Dark Fact but say nothing about this absolute douche bag of a boss fight. There is a 25ish frame random window where you can actual hurt him and its pure luck if the bats don't take up all the screen giving you no where to go. This has to easily be one of the worst boss fights in the entire franchise. I have to wonder how many people hit this point and just stop.

Is that the vampire in the cave of the first game? He was definitely annoying.

Yeah, Vagullion was the swarm of invulnerable bats that transformed into one large vulnerable bat for half a second and then spent 5 minutes chasing you before transforming again for another half a second.

He was annoying in older versions of the game, but they at least had a larger window of opportunity to hit him. The PSP version (and I assume the PC version of Chronicles as well) literally gives you like a 20 ish frame window to do a single hit on. If you're a hair too far from him, or hair too close, nope fuck you run around iin a circle for another minute.

The more versions of I and II I play the more my opinion that the PCE version of them is the best. I'm just finally getting to this PSP remake, and while the visuals are really nice, the bump mechanic, and some other aspects take a huge step backwards IMHO.

I loved Ys I and II to be honest. Originally, I intended to play them just to cross them off my list, but I ended up enjoying them immensely. I'll take a little break and come back to playing Ys Origin once I'm ready for another Ys game. Frankly, this is probably my favourite JRPG series at the moment. It's exactly what I need. No bullshit, no filler, great gameplay and great music.

Don't worry, we hate him too. It's just that Dark Fact manages to be even worse, lol

Was thinking of getting I + II Chronicles, Seven (psp), and Oath in Felghana.

What others?
Origins!

And instead of Seven I would recommend Celceta or VIII, they are similar but better.

Thanks, I have Origins on Steam, but I want to play all of them on the Vita. Think I'll just pick up all of them. They're cheap.

I *finally* finished Seven. I just grinded a bunch for the final boss because I just ran out of patience. It's probably the first Ys game where I've preferred the story over the gameplay. The story was pretty fun, especially the subplot around the politics and class division of Altago City. I just fount he combat to be so... spongey? It got tiring, and the boss fights weren't really that engaging, just time consuming. I like the rock, paper, scissors aspect so I'm not that bummed about having to use it moving forward. Just coming straight off of Origin which feels *so* crisp Seven just feels mushy and weird

My Rankings:

Ys: The Oath in Felghana (PC)
Ys Origin (PC)
Ys I (PC, Chronicles+)
Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys (PC Engine)
Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim (PC)
Ys Seven
Ys V (SNES)
Ys II (PC, Chronicles+)
Ys III (SNES)
Ys IV: Mask of the Sun (SNES)

So guys, I finished Ys 1 + 2 and am looking for the next game to play. Is Origins a good place to go next? Is that the beginning of the more modern Ys style?

I've checked online on that Ys dedicated website for the best order to play the games and it just confuses the shit out of me.

The technical beginning of the modern Ys style is actually Ys VI: Ark of Napishtim. It's slightly rougher than Felghana and Origin, which were made after that game. Personally, I'd go with Napishtim, Felghana and then Origin as the mechanics got just a bit refined in each game. I'm still trying to decide on whether playing Felghana with knowledge of the lore picked up in Napishtim adds or detracts from the experience.

i'd suggest doing release order which would 1+2 > VII the ark of napishtim > oath in felghana > origin > seven > memories of celceta > viii: lacrimosa of dana

this way you will see a lot more organic growth of the combat system and lore building, napishtim is rough as it was a reboot with a new gameplay system on which oath and origin have built

Falcom uploaded another brief WebCM for Ys IX yesterday:

Also a soundtrack video teaser just now went up:

did a spit take when I read that first track title

Not sure what's going on with the 'CODE: Red' and 'CODE: Black' separation though, pre-order/limited edition incentives? I have NOT been following the latest news about the Japanese release.
