What do you mean how and why? There are tons of materials that can be used to make eyeliner ( when I was little my sisters and I use to crush up stuff all the time for it) and plenty of reasons why.

Charcoal eyeliners are pretty popular in the area :P
Shows resolve.
(Would use a Lancome rather than charcoal though)

Odd thread...the people in the Horizon universe wear makeup, face paint, body modifications etc. Why is eyeliner surprising lol, you can make it out of material Aloy would have access to

Can we just pull back a little and talk about how comically useless this is as a "guide"? Like, did anyone not know that was supposed to be fur on her shoulders? Or that her braids were "visible"?

You can wear face paint in the first game so idk what the big deal about eye liner is. Make-up has been a thing for a very, very long time. Charcoal or hell, she could be using dino oil or something.

I mean, the real answer is that very very earthy designs still require a moderate amount of makeup to pass general standards of beauty.

In world though, yes, Aloy is living in a shack with her exiled father, but like...there are hundreds of characters in that game wearing makeup. Even in the village she's from, a lot of the npc's are wearing makeup.
