(CNN) Embattled Environmental Protection Agency Secretary Scott Pruitt directly appealed to President Donald Trump this spring to fire Attorney General Jeff Sessions and let him run the Department of Justice instead, according to three people familiar with the proposal. In an Oval Office conversation with Trump, Pruitt offered to temporarily replace Sessions for 210 days under the Vacancies Reform Act, telling the President he would return to Oklahoma afterward to run for office.

Pruitt's direct appeal to the President has not been reported previously.

Advisers quickly shot down the proposal, but it came at a time when Trump's frustration with Sessions over his decision to recuse himself from overseeing the Russia investigation had resurfaced. Trump has complained loudly and publicly about the recusal for the last 14 months, and floated replacing Sessions with Pruitt as recently as April.

You'd like to think that Pruitt could never be confirmed to head the DoJ, but somehow he still has a job.

Edit: The vacancies reform act has allowed Sessions to flood the DoJ with temporary attorneys to sidestep Senate confirmation. Very dangerous rule.

We knew this from the rumors floated out by his people earlier in the year.
Yeah, but this clears it up a bit, in that Pruitt himself intended to be slotted in as an acting AG (presumably with the offer of carrying out Trump's dirty work) with no intention of getting confirmed for the job long term. And if that was the idea then, I think it stands to reason that the offer still stands as long as Pruitt is in the administration.

The day Trump speaks honestly about anything - no matter how trite or insignificant - is the day Hell freezes over. Of course he'll lie about having people ghost write his books. Even when the actual authors have all gone on record that they did.

I usually hate seeing threads on singular Trump tweets but this tweet almost deserves one for the comedic value alone.

Yeah, I knew someone was going to catch this before I could post the correction myself. I'm glad that it was a fellow educator. /salute
I guess I shouldn't be too judgmental. Homophones confound even the most erudite of people. See, for example, how many people on this forum can't differentiate between phase and faze. Whenever someone says, "These Democrats can't phase Trump," I want to reply, "Is he waxing or waning?"

"Pour" is a troll, right?

He'll claim it is.

I die a little inside every time I see someone misuse there/their/they're.

You should always judge Trump.

I'm personally phased by the fact that American politics can't reach a new faze, myself.

Pruitt gives you a small taste of what common folk in developing nations put up with every day. Imagine all levels of government filled with people like Pruitt at the top. This is why there's so much corruption and stagnation in places like India. There's so much corruption people have become numb to it.

I don't think trump wants journalists to be killed but I don't think he minds it either. They should be nicer!

Clarence Thomas is the most important legal thinker in America
The oft-misunderstood Justice has single-handedly reshaped the way conservatives think about the law. God help us.

There is a commonly held view that Thomas is an intellectual lightweight. Radical and far-too-quiet on the bench. Idiosyncratic and lacking in influence. A fairly persistent take on Thomas' career holds that he's lived in the shadow of Justice Antonin Scalia, and his views were, at most, an exaggerated version of Scalia's originalism.

This view of Thomas is wrong.

Thomas is also the best chance of ever getting a 5-4 progressive majority. If Dems get to 51 in November, I don't see them having a real chance at losing the Senate until 2024. A solid 6 year window for Thomas to retire.
