Gimme the Ted Woolsey original localisation over the "improved" version any day. I can live with "Felix Down" if it means we get "Son of a Submariner!"

I'll take the SNES version as definitive thank you very much!

The best version will be the Octopath Traveler Style Remake.

I want to believe so bad that we're getting a remake in this style. They'll collect the money off the Octopath IP first, then do the VI remake and let the money flow.

yeah those mockups shows exactly why it's a bad idea. There isn't anything in there that I'd consider better than the original art style. It just looks worse and makes the original sprites looks worse as a result of all the god rays and blur

Its 2018 and its ridiculous that I can't play a good version of FF 1 -6 on PS4 or PC.

They need a classics edition released on console and PC that has every game 1 - 6 in it's best form.

Honestly, I don't know man.

That whole style is a great way to poke fun and celebrate retroism, but it doesn't evoke the feelings FFVI might have evoked at the time. I still prefer the FFIV PSP art style.
I totally understand what you mean! And yeah, I would prefer the IV PSP treatment but seeing the Octopath edit resonates with me for some reason. Maybe because it's just retro enough while adding a new look to it.

The og translation is fine, so I'm still comfortable telling people to just play the snes version.

How does the original version actually translate? A friend of mine and I are podcasting a FFVI playthrough right now: http://roleplayinggamescast.com/podcasts/episode_1/. He's on SNES and I'm on the Vita. There have been minor differences, but I think this scene was pretty much the same.
Clyde Mandelin to the rescue.

Going by an actual professional's analysis on it (which isn't to say that Woolsey wasn't, as he absolutely was good at what he did, as I'm referring more to armchair translators acting like they know better), the original line can be translated in a lot of different ways, but "argh! son of a bitch" is acceptable and "son of a submariner" is a perfectly fine self censor that gets across that Kefka isn't all there.

Kefka cusses a lot in the japanese version. Granted I am extremely biased but I think Kefka's character gets across much better with Woolsey's localization than a dry reading of the japanese version where he just calls everyone a bitch.

Yeah, something like this is the dream.

Didn't know CT PC was getting proper wide screen though, that's neat.

It's not. The widescreen is a smaller viewport than the SNES version and has wonky half-step pixels throughout. Even the latest patched version is a mess.

RLan's port begging tumblr is filled with so many good ideas, and his pitch for a wide-screen FF6 is all I've ever wanted from that game.

An octopath style remake would be nice, but seems like it'd be just as much work (if not more) than a full 3D remake.

Isn't there a SNES version mod that includes the GBA version script? or am I crazy.

Either way, this game definitely needs a definitive edition. After beating Chrono Trigger last year and being blown away, I really want to try this one as the other major SNES game I missed as a kid.

The PSX version is the one I physically own, so I don't have much choice.

I would never get anywhere near that mobile version either.

Greatest FF title ever made by a crazy amount, mainly because it was before Square lost a few steps. The translation in the SNES never bothered me either. The GBA was pretty decent, and fun.

I'd kill to see a game done in the style show up above.

I really do not care about the glorified rom hack that is the gba port. A cleaned up widescreen version with a good translation and some qol/bug fixes is all that's needed. Put it on 3ds and we are good

It sucks there is no SNES version with the GBA content, GBA still has smaller resolution even with the fixes.

SE will have collectively lost their minds if they don't immediately greenlight FF6R using the OT engine. It's perfect. That said, such a project would deserve a big budget. There were all sorts of interesting scenario set pieces in FF6 (minecarts, rts protect base, opera, open ended overworld, etc). OT is interesting but kinda simplistic on the scenario and set piece front imo. Also FF6 had more animated scenes with more expressions.

You people wanting and posting horrible screen of octopath FFVI should be put to jail.
FFVI is basically one of the highest achievement of pixel art ever.

Octopath is not a love letter to pixel art or retro graphics. It's a fucking shame. It's trying to make retro graphics modern and 3d by ruining them.
If SE had balls they would do modern pixel art, meaning super detailed pixel art, rather than putting horrible 16x16 texture on 3 polygons with some bloom and calling that next gen 2d.
So many indie games are putting them to absolute shame.

And so many people here want that... There is just no hope left..

Gba + mods is the best version. When is the last time you tried? The sound hack has been updated relatively recently.

Edit: It was 2016 but it was completely overhauled and fixed. If you only used the version before that you should try it again. I get what you are saying, that Square Enix sucks, but if you combine like 3 or 4 of the gba mods, I really feel it is the ultimate version.

That's like, just your opinion, man. Octopath is beautiful in its own way.

Yeah, that line didn't strike me as bad or the result of a clumsy translation. I'm playing VI for the first time, but it seemed consistent with Kefka's alternatingly bloodthirsty and cornball character.

I know a lot of people didn't like them, like... really didn't like them but I used to really hope that they remade V and VI in the DS "chibi style" like III and IV. I liked playing through III and I liked what I played of IV, but I did put it down after it kicked my ass inwards because it was so hard and keep forgetting I want to go back to it.

I liked them at the time. The texture quality is extremely low though. Even at the time people were complaining about it, though that was an issue with DS games in general and I was used to it then. I definitely wouldn't have minded chibi style remakes of V and VI though.

OT isn't in the FF6 color palette. Imagine it a bit browner, and a steam punk art style. They could make it work.

i prefer the gba version most. the soubd is a real shame, but the extra content, better translation, and bug fixes are great. Finally having evasion work as a stat is great.

I've been wanting to revisit FF6. I have the GBA version, but could you link me to the recommended mods?

Play the PSX version on emulator - load times are non-existent. And it can be played on a small laptop on the go.

I was playing the GBA version with the sound fix before I made this post. The Sound effects are still off and the hum is still present.

Don't mean to necro this thread, but I just started playing the Ted Woolsey version last night. Thanks for the recommendation, folks!
