Disclaimer: This is not another "VR is dead!" thread, I realise that VR is growing and healthy industry and I have no doubt it will grow further with or without my participation. This thread is about my personal experience with technology and I just want to know if anyone have same thoughts.

So I was excited about VR since announcement of Oculus Rift. I had DK2, CV1, PSVR and also Oculus Go briefly. I noticed that with every device I have same pattern - first it's a mind blowing experience, but then slowly novelty and wow-factor fading away and negatives of technology appearing bigger and bigger, to the point when I don't want to bother with wearing a headset to try new game.

With PSVR recently, beginning was very promising, every game looked so amazing, I thought I'll use it alot. PS Move implementation was also great, Superhot VR is truly impressive game, and I also was sure that I'll be playing it oft. Fast forward to today - I haven't touched it in a months and decided to sell it - I have absolutely no desire to use it anymore, and nothing at E3 was interesting enough for me to keep it.

The reason, as I said, is that I somehow completely lost that wow-effect that you feel when beginning using a headset. Like you launch Battlezone and holy shit that tank is huge! Or hey, Thumper in VR is something else! Or wow, being inside Rez feels amazing! Now, in fact, I like to play Rez on my plasma more, instead of dealing with PSVR. Somehow everything I liked about it is not so impressive now, and in return every downside is more visible - SDE, wires, small FOV etc etc.

I'm not even sure I'm picking PSVR2 when it's out, maybe if it'll be significantly better, wireless etc, but for now I'm not interested in VR in it's current state. Now, I know there is enough people who are using their headsets everyday, but is there anyone with experience similar to mine? Who was super enthusiastic about technology but turned opposite later?

I told all my friends. It's sorta of a new kinect in the current state (in terms of market performace and gaming appealing).

I feel the same. The first few days were great but the wow factor has worn off. Will probably sell mine soon.

I can't go back to playing games I can now play in VR, on a regular screen. I haven't played Rez Infinite on a regular screen ever.

Not me OP, I have just been more picky about the games I am playing in VR as there are plenty of clones which will can make VR boring.

Recommend Wipeout VR if you have not tried it! Also Moss.

I was blown away by it for a while, but since then it's been a dust collector for me. It's currently too limited and the hardware isn't there for what I'm looking for.

Nope. Been playing my Vive since I bought it a year ago. Play Pavlov or something else for at least an hour every other day, minimum.

Pavlov is my drug right now, it's such a blast. To me, it is objectively better than playing regular Counter Strike. I really, really hope they add more custom modes and things like with regular CS, like zombies or TTT.

They recently added Gun Game and it's one of my favorite VR experiences. Make me feel like John Wick every time.

I feel like ease of setting it up comes into play, mine is always out so I can do it whenever I feel like it.

I do however think we need some more focus on software. I want more games that truly think outside the box like Echo VR, rather than ones that are just trying to bring normal games into VR. Stormlands looks very promising.

never did appeal to me with the prices they were asking. if it sticks around and the price drops significantly i might try it but i imagine i'd get bored of it after a while.

Too inconvenient, I returned my oculus rift.

The gameplay experiences are limited due to controls/motion-sickness, the graphics don't look that great (I've been gaming at 4K for about 1.5 years now), and strapping a headset with wires on your head gets old. I remember getting home from work and wanting to play VR but not going through the hassle of strapping shit to me face after a 10 hour work day.

I feel like VR is only getting stronger as time goes on. We just need more focused killer apps like SUPERHOT and Beat Saber to push the market forward. Also, I feel like PSVR is holding back people's impressions of what VR can really do

I think in its current form it's too cumbersome with the wires and stuff. One it becomes more streamlined I think I will use it more.

Yeah the wow factor is not there anymore but i find myself wanting to play every couple of weeks and when i do i have as much fun as it was the first time, I think what we need is more vr compatible games.

Thats the only reason I haven't gotten one. I don't think I even have enough power outlets in my room to add more shit either. I'd love to try it. I just don't want to set it up in my room.

The tech in its current form holds zero appeal for me, so I can't blame you.

Definitely not, I got back into it (I have PSVR) because my friend has this HUUUUGE htc vive set up. It was amazing to play Thrill of the Fight, a VR boxing sim, having to actually move around and fight defensively. Knockout League is pretty fun on PSVR, but it's totally an arcade style boxing game. It's too bad it didn't catch on because it's basically VR Punch-Out!!! On vibe, Pavlov VR is really pretty great playing a VR multiplayer shooter with classic maps from Goldeneye, Halo CE, and Counter Strike. I've been playing a lot of virtual Rick-Ality on PSVR just messing around.

I guess at the end of the day, if you have a dynamite PC and a big space for HTC Vive, you probably have a lot more fun than a normal living room space with PSVR.

You do acclimatise to it - it isn't a wow moment every time you put it on. I think that's the motivation for watching others try your VR headset - to re-experience that wow moment second-hand.

I have found that the novelty of VR + motion controls hasn't worn off for me, so I think it depends on the games you play. Something like Thumper, after a while, will just feel like 'surround-sound 3D', but reaching into an environment and manipulating objects is an entirely different way of interacting with a game world.

It just always felt complicated to play my Rift. I was always fighting with USB problems even after buying the recommended usb 3.0 card and installing the 3rd party utility. I also didn't like how isolated it made me feel from what was happening in my house (36 years old with a toddler). It took up a lot of space in the basement as well for a play area. I really enjoyed the games I played on it, but after never playing for a few months I sold it. I definitely don't regret it, and I think VR is pretty sweet, but it's just not a fit for me right now.

my rift and PSVR are basically paperweights these days but mainly due to personal reasons... been working a lot and whatever little game time i have i'd rather just be drinking beer and lounging on a sofa than bothering with a headset and all that. doesn't help that its summer and my A/C kinda sucks

the break helps because whenever i do get a chance to get a little VR time in i get that "woah this is cool" feeling back. i think for most that's how it'll be going forward, something you pick up once or twice a month, get tired of until another release prompts you to put it on again. kind of middle of the road between "holy shit this is life changing!" and going in the closet next to the Kinect and wii fit board

Just got Moss since it finally got a physical release and I'm super hyped to play it. It's not something I do every day since it's tough (and rude) to have to shut out my wife completely during our shared time. Today's my day off alone though so I'm all about it!

It's still really exciting and wondrous for me. Love all the haters jumping in to be like yeah, that's what it'd be like if I owned one, too! Not sure if I've seen as big a backlash for an entire medium before. Color TV? That's just a fad. They'll all come crawling back to black and white.

I think VR is pretty cool, and it's given me experiences I couldn't have had on a flat screen.

But the reality for me is I just don't play VR games like I did when I received it. If I didn't ask for a Rift on Christmas from my family, I'd probably be selling it. In fact I regret asking for it, because I feel bad they paid $350 for me to essentially try a new toy. There's just way too many awesome "pancake" games for me to bother putting on a headset just to shoot/swipe at things.

Bought a PSVR at launch in Oct 2016
By Nov 2016 I was either bored of it or felt too many games caused me to feel ill.
By Feb 2017 I had sold off my unit and games.

Never once have felt the urge since to reconsider a second chance.

I did enjoy a few experiences, but the thrill faded, the tech felt behind(PSVR at least) and maybe in the next console iteration I'd give a more capable consumer friendly unit a try, but the wow factor drifted fast after that first week of use.

I was at least pleased to see Sony's heavy push of software at E3. Plenty for fans to enjoy incoming.

I think the only thing that will wow people is compelling software. It's been a while since I've seen a VR game the mass market gets excited about (not VR enthusiasts).

I personally feel like it's been getting better. I'm okay with not using mine every single day, as long as I have a great experience every now and then. Which is what I've been getting.

For me not at all. Headsets sitting on my desk, I put it on and it boots up in seconds. I have too many games to play. Lately Brass Tactics is my main addiction but Im playing Chronos and Arktika 1 also. I recently bought an Oculus Go for watching youtube and smaller games. Love it also. Kin, Republique, Defense Grid 2, and Herobound are amazing. I think your crazy tbh.

Own Samsing Odyssey, Rift, and Go.

Mostly. I have a PSVR and haven't used it in a couple of months. It's a neat experience, and I enjoyed things like RE7, Farpoint, Wipeout etc.

It's just not somethign I enjoy as much as regular games in HD on the TV. The low resolution, the headset making me sweaty and having lens fogging issues now that it's hot out (have A/C, but old rental house is poorly insulated so it struggles to keep up on very hot days), wires in the way, some neck pain from an injury etc. make me not want to bother with it most of the time.

Oh man, I was thinking buying one for my SO. Does the PsVR have any good driving and flying simulators? Is Skyrim VR good or not? Was under the impression that everything was good but expensive.

I sold my Rift, it was great early on but the thrill soon wore off. I'll probably come back in a few years once the technology has improved.

I had the best setup that was available for a total of 6 days before I sold it, VR is just not something I see ever being for me. The whole experience just made me feel nausea, frustration, boredom with the novelty of it I think.

I mean, if there was a truly killer app like Elder Scrolls 6 or something, I don't even think then I would want to try it again.

The problem is the hassle of organising to play it. Oculus go and oculus Santa Cruz are the way forward imo.

I still use mine regularly and with games that offer a (good) VR mode, I can't go back to a regular TV-screen (Skyrim, Rez, all racers...). Also, normal shooters have lost almost all appeal to me.

The wow-factor from the VR experience itself is gone by now, but that does not erase the benefits some games and genres gain from the immersion.

Just as my 4k HDR TV itself does not wow me anymore, until I see the same material running on a 1080p non-hdr display.

Nevertheless, I absolutely understand everybody that simply does not feel the same benefits of VR as me, that stuff is highly subjective I think.

It's great and worth the price of entry, Driveclub is decent once you've got your VR legs and Skyrim is fantastic specially after the latest patch.

As for flight sims? I've seen people talk about them on reddit but unsure if they're out yet (no interest for me)

As far as PSVR goes, I think Sony needs to work out a roomscale implementation. That would definitely make PSVR pair more closely with its competitors. One that happens, and the technology is improved/streamlined, the positives will outweigh the negatives. We're still in the VR "beta" generation, I feel. We're just testing the foundation of what's possible.

Chicken and egg problem. It's an extremely small market at the moment, which means most developers can't afford putting proper dev resources behind a title. Right now you have to assume that even a Smash Hit VR title would maybe sell 100k units and it's hard to make the business make sense at that point.

We have a VR concept that I think would be amazing and could be super addicting, but there's no way we can put an entire team behind it simply cause unless we'd get extremely lucky, we'd probably never make our money back.

I haven't seen any VR games yet that'd make me really want to buy a VR headset just for this or that game - that's probably why you lost interest.

I use my PSVR every now and then, especially for Skyrim. Can't wait for Beat Saber, I'm hoping that will last me a while. For now there's no reason to get a Vive as I don't have enough space for room scale, but once I eventually move, that will be a top priority.

Nah, I'm still aboard, I'm just waiting on more narrative games. The lack of play space is killing me though, can't fully enjoy Superhot VR in my small bedroom.

I am definitely in love with the idea of VR, but for me it's still not at a quality/affordability sweet spot. I want less cords, less bulkiness and cheaper, essentially. Years away. I hope that compelling software keeps being designed to keep a bit of momentum going at least.
