My mother in law is in a graduating care community - starts war normal house with ADA stuff, then condo, then assisted care visits then more intensive care.
That's getting more common. These villages get divided because the healthy retired don't really want to be around the intensive care old folk.

Some retirement facilities are so damn nice that people say they wish they had moved in sooner. Great food, maid service, spas, a variety of social activities. It's luxury living at it's finest.

Sweet revenge for what? Going to a place that could properly care for her? She's an idiot and this sentiment is stupid. She's not some badass, she killed her fucking son over some bullshit.
First, I was not the one who said "sweet revenge", though I agreed with the basic sentiment that it wasn't about staying in her home. I said "spite". You're acting like there was some sort of approval for what she did in my post, when none was intended. I can understand the basic thought process without approving of it. I don't condone or approve of her actions in any way or think her to be any sort of badass.

Secondly, in her mind it clearly wasn't about going to a place that could properly care for her. In her mind it was probably about her son betraying her and kicking her out of her home. Perception can matter more to people than objective reality in situations like this.

Thirdly, of course she's an idiot. I never tried to claim differently. I was pointing out to posters who were acting like she thought this would save herself that it wasn't about that at all. It was about taking her son down with her. It's flipping over the board when you're losing at Monopoly taken to a murderous extreme.

Yeah they used to be in a community of retired over 50 - it was basically a country club. Amazing gym, pool, golf, tennis, normal homes with amazing views and bizarrely low HOAs - $150 a month. My sister pays ten times that for a mailbox and a creepy doorman in Manhattan.

I have never understood this care house practice by Americans. It's like literally getting rid of your parents.

Seems like the most selfish thing to me.

Your sister pays $1500 a month in HOA fees?

Some people require a lot of care, especially with advanced age conditions or things such as dementia or other illness. It's hard for a family to provide 24 hour care if they have children/full time jobs as well.

I would preferred to have brought my grandparents into our home, but we couldn't due to my grandmother's extensive medical needs and smaller house size, despite my grandfather still being quite able bodied and sharp in mind at his age.

Not all care facilities are equal either, many offer a variety of living options and access to a range of activities and good care.

Almost everyone in a Manhattan condo pays something in that ballpark. I think it's a disgusting rip off but as the doorman strike a few years ago proved, Manhattan condo owners are fragile suckers who don't seem to understand how normal people get packages in the mail.

I think the weirdest thing about this for me is a 72 year old having a girlfriend. I struggle to wrap my head around old people dating.

And yeah, she really didn't think this through. Why is prison any better than a home?

72 isn't that old, depending on the person's fitness. I've seen very active, healthy 72 year olds. Hell, I've seen 90 year olds who still get up and go. I've also seen 50 year olds on death's doorstep from hard living, too much drinking and smoking and eating shitty food.
