People seem to forget that the Switch is little more than 1 year old, when they compare its classic library to consoles that have ran their course lol. At the pace it is going, it will blow them all away soon enough. All while offering its unique ability of playing on the go and on TV interchangeably, which can't really be achieved in the same manner anywhere else. It's a beast.

Sorry, I have to plead ignorance. What's so special about these Sega Ages ports?
M2 is developing, the same team that did the 3D classics, except now they have no era limitations(due to power) they are adding additional features, and always bring complete perfect ports with no bugs. For example Sonic 1 will have the arcade version. I'm still wondering if we'll get a stealth announcement release this month they should be out soon

Ohhh, that's very cool! Hope we see some Dreamcast games at some point. As tempting as a perfect port is, I don't really need another round of Genesis games in my library.

This update never got a thread just the original announcement, mind if I make a thread

Master system, arcade and genesis are wave 1, wave 2 could have Saturn and Dreamcast games if the first wave does well
Currently sonic, gain ground, phantasy star, Alex kid, thunder force IV(I think) are confirmed, and initial wave is 15 games. We don't have a release date yet, but since it's coming out this summer we should hear something soon

It's pretty good, but I don't like repurchasing the same games over and over. SNK and other companies are just desperate to make a quick buck off of their old titles and the best opportunity to do that is the launch window.

I don't mind the collections, like Megaman Anniversary, stuff like that. I think they offer good value, but I don't think many of these titles are worth more than $ individual. Especially when you consider that people have so many other places to play them.

Hmm, I didn't know Samurai Showdown was available for me to play on Switch....

Will download later.

As an aside: I'd love to get Namco Museum, but as someone who spent a lot of time in my childhood playing the Revenge and Return of Arcade PC packs, the selection is incomplete without Mappy, Ms. Pacman, Motos and Rally-X

Does anybody know when the Kunio-Kun collection is supposed to be released?
It's a mystery, they announced it and never talked about it again for some reason, but I believe the release window was this year.

Honestly it's my most anticipated collection after MMX LC, and the fact that it may be localized in some form (due to japanese Xbox One and Steam versions being a thing) makes me super excited.

I really need those M2 Shot Triggers games on my Switch. With how involved they are with the console, it's a surprise they aren't on there yet.

I literally do not understand the negativity regarding the Joycon split D-pad. It works absolutely fine for every single game I've used it for.

Hardcore retrogamers don't even think about buying a modern console with emulators. It's all about real hardware.

As a hardcore retrogamer, I disagree.

I love my original hardware, but having all these games easily accessible in one place on a modern console you don't have to mess around with to get running is great.

Don't worry, you're not alone. Played Celeste and many other indie games that require precise controls for hundreds of hours just fine in portable mode with the joy cons analog sticks. But people love to complain. Everyone has his own opinion ;)

I've been curious as to what this Johnny Turbo thing is. It's the most hideous label I've ever seen to have slapped on a game, but some of the games released are pretty great. Who is Jonny Turbo?

Yep, I thought so the same. But Johnny Turbo is actually an old brand.

"Johnny Turbo is a superhero character created to advertise the Turbo Duo, a hybrid of the Turbografx-16 console and its add-on, the TurboGrafx CD, in North America. The character was conceived by Turbo Technologies Inc. (a venture of NEC and Hudson Soft) as a mascot of the console."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Turbo

Damn OP you fucked up the title.
Should've just called it Switch Retro Games |OT| or something... but that still probably wouldn't have stopped all of these 'no it's not' waste posts.

Yeah, I'm not even going to bother answering them. People don't seem to understand the "becoming" part of the title means it's not there yet, but on its way. The reason why I sid not to start comparing is because the thread will be filled with console wars bullshit and people arguing that this or that console was better, which is not the point of the thread.

As a "hardcore retro gamer" (whatever that means), I disagree. Love my origional console collection as much as every new gen that follows, including retro ports published on these new platforms.

Not necessarily. I love retro gaming and play just as many if not more old games than modern ones a year and still prioritize convenience over authenticity. In that sense my new 3DS with CFW is a far better retro machine than my Switch will ever be until it either gets CFW itself or Nintendo offers actual VC.

I think the D pad is indeed garbage, but a lot of people seem to miss the fact that a real one is only ever needed in games that require diagonal inputs, which a lot of 2D games on Switch don't.

I mean I'd still pay good money for an official joycon with a D pad, but I'm not agonizing over it (yet).

Honestly I have never play any of these retro games before. My first console was an NES and I was never into arcade games, so when I see the amount of retro games that are constantly appearing I have no idea which should I buy lol
I'd love if someone can suggest me some MUST to have retro games.

From what's currently available:

Get the Seiken Densetsu Collection if you know Japanese.
From the NeoGeo games get, Aero Fighters 2 & 3, Garou, Samurai Shodown 4, Last Blade 2, Metal Slug 1, X, 3, 4, NAM 1975, Sengoku 3, Shock Troopers.
From the Arcade Archives get: Donkey Kong (if you like it), Double Dragon, Vs Super Mario Bros.
From Johnny Turbo's Arcade get: Gate of Doom, Sly Spy, Wizard Fire.
From Psykio's games get: Dragon Blaze, Gunbird, Gunbird 2, Samurai Aces, Strikers 1945, Strikers 1945 II, TENGAI
Get the Mega Man Legacy Collection.
Get the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection.
Get Wild Guns Reloaded and Ikaruga.

I thought I was done paying for random old arcade games but I have a serious weakness for Gunbird 2 and Money Puzzle Exchanger.

I own a cart of Thunder Force 4 but I'm curious about the Switch port. Does it have a release date?

Well, a portable is a bit of a different case.

In the case of Genesis games I'm extremely picky about sound so I generally only play those on a real Model 1. And Thunder Force 4 in particular has an incredible soundtrack so I'll instantly notice if something's off.

I'm thinking I'll finally beat my first NES game when the online service hits.

Never really pulled me in before but they'll be free with the service and the convenience and save states will make it more bearable

Hmmmm I remember that Jonny Turbo Comic (Sega was the evil corporation with the men in Black), but I feel like it's a different thing.

Like Johnny Turbo would be porting Turbografx games rather then obscure arcade titles.

I'm fascinated by the games that this Johnny Turbo has selected. Bad Dudes of course is well known, but some games are really obscure.

"NX will be for videogame lovers."
- Satoru Iwata

Back when I heard that quote a few years ago I KNEW the NX was gonna be awesome. Iwata wasn't gonna just go say that for no reason. I had faith since then.

It's more than true.

That's a lot of games! Thanks!
I just fund the tate grip also, so I'm looking forward to try it in some of these games.

I never heard of the Johny Turbo brand either, maybe it wasn't a thing in Europe. Sly Spy though, what a great game.

Its been great, really. Especially for someone like myself who grew up with the NES, SNES, Genesis, and the arcades. Now we just need Capcom to put more of their arcade titles on Switch and for Square-Enix to localize the Seiken Densetsu collection.

I disagree. Switch has the worst retro support of any Nintendo system in more than a decade. It's a complete joke compared to what we had before, and you could never convince me that killing off Virtual Console was at all a good thing. Also, no, the Online Service is not a replacement. It only has NES games, and that's it. A handful of third-party retro collections is nice, but still not even remotely comparable to the breadth of content we had available before, especially if you want retro Nintendo titles past NES, which just aren't happening now.

Dude... the Switch is not even 2 years old. You are comparing it to past systems with a 5+ years library. Not even the Wii had this many retro titles in its first 2 years. Jeez.

I don't know about "paradise" but playing the original arcade Donkey Kong on my coffee table in TATE mode is what I've been dreaming of ever since I was 10 years old. It is magnificent.

I'd love to see Midway Arcade Classics on Switch for Robotron 2084, Smash TV and Paperboy!

3rd party collections are nice I guess, but, unless Nintendo is really underselling it, that's largely cancelled out by the pathetic excuse of a VC. 20 NES games a year and a half into the system's life just doesn't cut it.

I genuinely believe there's more money to be made at a dollar or two for Neo Geo stuff than $7.

Much as 1992 me would be baffled by this situation - I think they're too expensive to be casual and too cheap to be premium. For me it's whatever the opposite of a sweet spot is.

They have way more data than I do though.

I knew Switch had retro releases but that list is pretty crazy. Reaaally hope they extend this heavily into Dreamcast's library.

Also, what Metal Slug games are worth playing? Which one is best for newbies, and what's X?

great for retro and indie gaming - basically the perfect device for both, plus it can play Mario Kart 8, Xenoblade 2, Breath of the Wild, and eventually Captain Todd. Don't leave out Captain Todd.

More seriously, the retro, shmup, and indie lineup for this system is nuts. however it compares to the Wii or the Wii U, the ability to play these games on the go (and often in tate mode; can't wait for that Flip Grip) is absolutely bonkers. it's precisely what I dreamed of when I was 10 and wishing I could bring my SNES on the road with me.

agree it would be nice to have more classic GBA, SNES, and Gamecube games, but there's plenty to chew on in the meantime. I never owned a Neo Geo and now I've got the next best thing.

I genuinely believe there's more money to be made at a dollar or two for Neo Geo stuff than $7.

I would think someone like you that's in the game industry should know that what you are proposing is just not feasible if you want to make a profit.

There are three companies making money off of that measly $8. Nintendo has to get a cut for the game being on the system, SNK gets a cut for being their game, and Hamster has to get a cut for doing the actual work. These aren't just rom dumps, they actually put some work in it by adding hi-score modes, both Japan and US releases, and a wealth of options to customize the experience. All of that can take months of work. Then there's also the beta testing, and the money you have to pay to get the ESRB rating.

Obviously a lower price would be better (when is it not?), but not if you want the devs to make money and continue porting more games.
