So I'm not a CVX fan but I definitely get why people like it and most things people (including myself) don't like about the game are defendable. Steve is the sole exclusion. He just sucks. I read your defense of him and never (at least for me) did he go from annoying to even just okay. He's an unlikable shithead from beginning to end. Now his VO does play a big part in what makes him annoying but even his script just makes him come off as an entitled ass with the maturity of a twelve year old. Also the romance with Claire is just so forced and bad. Extreme situations can certainly bring people together but nothing about Steve and Claire's scenes together ever came off as a believeable adult relationship to me. If anything Steve comes off a little creepy in some spots. Please don't take my Steve hate personally it's just that once I get started talking about Steve it all spills out. He's easily my least favorite character in the series

Like i said in the OP, I totally get why people don't like Steve. He doesn't have a great introduction and his flaws can be quite persistent throughout the game. The paragraph about Steve at the end was mainly just my thoughts and interpretations on Steve and his role in the game, I don't and didn't expect people to agree with me (though it's nice if they do lol). I also forgot to mention in the OP, but I don't see any actual love between Steve and Claire. I think Steve had just grown so attached to Claire that he was merely in love with the idea of being in love with Claire (plus he was dying so he probably didn't want any possible regrets) and Claire was so upset at Steve's death because she had promised to escape with Steve several times and ultimately failed which I can imagine would be devastating for Claire.

I would argue that RE3 is the worst. Nemesis is cool but the rest of that game is extremely mediocre imo

I love the setting of Raccoon City so much, so 3 is a favourite of mine alone lol

I uhh didn't read that wall of text so I'll just say I love this game. I was always surprised at the hate I've seen online. I'm pretty sure that it was well received at the time.

This game has a lot of broken shit in it, and it's too big for its own good imo, but I respect the hustle. I like it more in retrospect, it certainly crams a lot of unique stuff in it to help offset its weird pacing and false climaxes. It's the zenith of classic RE backtracking and item stuff, which maybe not as considered as REmake in its implementation, but is a key part of survival horror for me. It's not a patch of any of the first three classic RE's still, but it's a very solid entry in the series in spite of its fuckery. At the very least, it's a lot more inspired than Zero. Has a really fun absurd storyline too.

I also never understand the hate this game gets. Maybe series fatigue in the classic style? First resident evil on the next gen consoles looked and played fantastic compared to the ps1 games.

Game was hard and long compared to other resident evils.

Ehhhhh I think the premiered backgrounds of 2 and 3 look a lot nicer than the real-time graphics of CVX. 3 also played better with the addition of quick turning and snappier animations. I'd say RE1 and RE3 are harder games too outside of a few of the borked boss fights here.

REmake and Zero were more wowers in terms of visuals and added back in some of the control enhancements 3 brought to the table.

Wonderful music aside, I still consider this to be the most overrated Resident Evil of them all by far.
I think you are way off here, 50% of RE fans hate it, 25% think it's ok and the rest love it.

Back in 1999 the real time backgrounds and moving camera were eye openers. It just didn't age anywhere near as well.

Side note: I think I moaned at you for about a year to play it after your lttp series, glad you finally did.

This was my first RE as a kid on Dreamcast and I loved it. I played through the entire series since then, and revisited CVX last year on PS4. I still love it.

Not the best in the series but not a bad game by any means.

Glad you enjoyed it OP.

Going through the thread, I see we have some 3 vs CVX. In that discussion I'll always be on the side of 3. Especially mechanically. RE3 deserves having that numbers with the changes in gameplay it incorporated. Compared to CVX.

The worst Resi of all time.

Yes even 6 and Revelations 1.

I think the OP did a great job explaining why he loves Code Veronica and I'm really happy for him that he did!

I also agree with this comment I quoted. Code Veronica is easily my least favorite of the main RE games (0-7, CV, Revelations 1/2). 6, 0 and Rev 1 are down there for sure, but Code Veronica just bums me out. It's so long and charmless compared to the other games in its style. The enemies are terrible, it's ugly as hell, and the way you can get fucked by glitches or lack of ammo is a big problem. It's definitely an RE game but probably the worst of the bunch.

I still like the game but it's always going to be a disappointment coming off of what preceded it. In terms of combat control and mechanics it was a significant step backward from the steady improvements to the PS1 games. Voice acting regressed yet again and it introduced one of the franchises most ridiculous and unnecessary plot elements. It had almost none of the narrative control elements that RE1, 2 and 3 did, which all allowed you to do things that would change the story in significant ways. Level design was problematic as well, with the biggest issue being item boxes placed much too far apart, resulting in a lot more backtracking than usual for a first-time play. Like all Resident Evil games this is alleviated on repeat runs, but CVX is one of the few where it actually annoyed me on my first run through the game. The only place where the game made significant improvements were in the technological department, but even then art direction took a big hit as the 3D environments simply lack so much of the detail that made the environments really come to life in RE2 and 3. On top of this much of the game has a very drab, gray look to it. The Outbreak games hold up much better comparatively even if they still didn't look as good as their pre-rendered counterparts.

This all might sound like I'm being very harsh, but as I said I do still enjoy the game, it's just that of all the classic-style Resident Evil games it would probably be the last one I'd go to on a regular basis.

This is the game where the story did a 360 and turned back. By far my least favorite.

I love all the RE love that's going on. This was my number one anticipated game back when I had a Dreamcast. Invited all my friends over to watch the bad ass opening (it looks so real! lol) and it didn't fail to deliver.

Putting that second disc in and kicking off with Chris to this music. Ohhh boy. This was the real RE3.

I couldn't stand the low-poly look of the environments compared to the pre-rendering of the PSX games. The game just looks ugly to me.

It plays fine but I felt the level design was lacking and wasn't as polished as before. There's a mechanical lift at one point which raises and fits pixel perfect through a broken hole for you to cross. It doesn't look make shift at all. And at one point you need a wheel to access a submarine to descend one level.

And as cheesy as the psx stories were, they don't hold a candle to this game. Wesker is the fucking worst and I hate how the spotlight shifted from unethical faceless umbrella corp to this sunglasses wearing matrix guy.

My ranking:

1. Resident Evil 2
2. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
3. Resident Evil 4
4. Resident Evil Remake
5. Resident Evil 1
6. Resident Evil 7
7. Resident Evil 5
8. Resident Evil Code: Veronica
9. Resident Evil 0 (nothing is as bad as this game)
10: Resident Evil 6 ( ... except this game)

I just started a replay of this after spending a LOT of time with RE3. It kind of sucks that Claire's mobility is actually worse than Jill's from the prior game and you lose the dodge mechanic, although you gain a superior knife and a button mash mechanic to escape from bites.

Only real impression so far is that while the soundtrack is lauded here, and I do love that save room music, some of it is a dud, mainly anything that plays out during a cutscene like the graveyard at the start.

My biggest gripe so far is how Claire looks NOTHING like her CG model in game. Completely different hair and fair. Chris manages to be close.

Also love that like all japanese games of the late 90s, Leonard Dicaprio and David Bowie are paid homage to with Steve and Alfred respectively.

We ranking? We ranking...

4 - Yes, I know, some hate it for 'ruining' the series, but you're wrong, it's the best, and the story was always stupid anyway.
REmake - Masterful design, just yeah... a perfect game.
2 - The classic Aliens to RE1's Alien. I can't wait for the remake.
1 - It was unlike anything I'd played at the time. It's clunky, and ugly, but it's special.
CV - The most epic of the OG gang.
7 - A lot of this game is actively bad I think. But the main house section? Godly.
3 - Kind of a retread of 2 in some ways, but I loved it.
Rev 1 - It's okay-ish. It has moments I loved, but man, that enemy design? Shit tier.
5 - Turbo charged 4 with irritating co-op and no charm.
0 - Why? Why would you make this game? I will say to this day it is in places the most beautiful game in the series though.
6 - Didn't finish it, it's dumpster fire shit.

Hmm, I remember being quite disappointed with CV back in the day. I was really happy to be playing as my girl hero, Claire, again, but I despised Steve and I remember being quite annoyed that someone as kickass as Claire had to be romantically linked with a dweeb like Steve. The part where he crashes the digger or whatever it was because he's too busy ogling her...

The return of Wesker was epic though, and the game is nice and lengthy. Switching characters partway through also adds some freshness to the experience. Nice puzzles, too. The bandersnatches are inexcusably poor enemy design, though. And the moths. Overall, it's not as bad as 0 but it's not quite the step forward fans were expecting after 1-2-3.

Here's my RE ranking, from best to worst (I'm aware some of my choices are not popular):

2-4-1-3-REV2-6-REmake-CV-REV1-0-5-7

4. RE6

8. RE7
9. REREV1
10. RE3

Here, duh.
The third best in the series purely from a thematic standpoint. It has a touch of Psycho, which felt like a completely unexpected source of horror inspiration at that period. I still revel in the game.

I don't do list wars. It'll just upset everyone, anyway.

Still, Code Veronica is unquestionably the most unfairly maligned entry so far. And yes, that soundtrack is fantastic. Only RE2 comes close to matching it.

This was the game that killed RE as a survival horror series...and deservedly so. Very mediocre in every way. Plus if you didn't store up enough items for the boss on the airplane you had to restart the game.

RE4
REmake
RE2
RE3
RE1
RE5
RE7
RE:CVX
RE:6
RE: Rev 2
RE: Zero
RE: Rev

Even the lower ones on my list I like quite a bit for various reasons, but the top 5 are godly. Revelations is the only one I haven't even fully completed tho, I found it pretty lacking.

7 has been slipping lower for me though, the first half is very good but the second half is very not.

There isn't a HD version on PS4.

CV X HD is on PS3 and 360.

CV X is on PS4 via PS2 emulation, so if you're going to get it, make sure to grab it from the US store if you can, avoid the PAL nightmare.

And yea, I also remember showing everyone the intro to this game LOL
Everyone thought it looked so real. Especially the eye movement of Claire. Funny how I never thought we would have better graphics in real time.

I'll never not laugh at the folks who have to repeatedly lie to themselves about CV being the real Resident Evil 3. Sorry chumps, the only RE3 is RE3.

Nope, they're awful on the HD version. Some of them run at a really low framerate and the quality of the video is awful. I compared it side-by-side with the original the other day and the non-HD version was very smooth by comparison.

Here's a history lesson for some here...

"The game was originally intended to be the true sequel to Resident Evil 2, and is still referred to as such by its creators. The title of "Resident Evil 3" was given to what was originally a spin-off game being developed in tandem for the PlayStation"

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.vg...-evil-3-nemesis-began-life-as-a-spin-off/amp/

I am trying to find the article where it mentions Sony having a deal with Capcom to make sure all mainline RE games needed to come out on PS1.

Anyhow, CV was always the real RE3. It pushed the story forward after RE2, we learn more about the founders of the viruses, and it is the genesis of the war between Chris and Wesker leading to RE5.

Many probably dismissed it at the time when it was fresh because it was only on the DC. Nonetheless, Capcom went all out with this game and clearly they were trying new things with the series.

One push the story, the other one was literally RE 2.5 and even shorter than RE2.

Try again......chump

lmao at RE3 not pushing the story forward. What happened to Raccoon City at the end of your copy of RE3?

Here's a history lesson for some here...

Stuff changes all the time mid-development, especially in planning stages before any of this stuff is publicly revealed. Just because CV was, at some conceptual stage envisioned as RE3 does not make it RE3. RE3 is RE3. The claim about some sort of Sony partnership or contract restricting numbered games to the PS1 is also something I see oft-repeated but literally never proved or cited with a source.

The claim that Capcom also "went all out" and were trying new things in CV is absurd since CV has considerably less new things than RE3, and even the new things it does have are done with less frequency and importance than RE3's new features. Dual weapons are restricted to only a couple of weapons you can't even reload, and the FPV gimmick is used twice in two very brief boss fights outside of the battle mode.

Definitely the best Bio Hazard game. It had the right length, some good plot twists, the best Wesker in the series, and excellent level design, all while retaining the old style despite being fully 3D rendered.

And then BH4 happened and people lost their shit over a bloated third-person shooter. Go figure.

You only have to play them and see the gulf in ambition between the two projects to see which is the successor to RE1 and 2. However, it's semantic and nothing more. They're both canon, they're both mainline.

I'd like to know if Sony actually cared, the way I'd always heard it was the Capcom wanted to leave the numbered ones on PlayStation to make it easier for the fanbase and not to put people off who were new to the franchise by calling CV RE3. No idea though.

CV added the quick turn, 3 added the dodge, they're both the pre-RE4 to me.
