Those sales still count though, right?

Of course they count, but I'm just explaining the reasoning behind the sales increase. People are assuming it's because of e3 hype, but actually GameStop had a great deal that week. We see that sometimes on old games that get big price drops and re-enter the npd charts.

Yeah, what matters to the enthusiast does not always matter to the general public. It was a bad E3 presentation because some key games did not appear or were delayed, but I think Mario Party, Pokémon, and Smash is more than enough to please casuals for buying the system.

Only Pokemon Quest was a new game, right? It's amazing that so many people are apparently picking up a Switch off of it being a machine full of ports.

Portability, not ports. Until people realize that the convenience of console level experiences on the go is a primary driver of Switch's appeal, they will continue to be baffled by its success. You can't take the PS4 or XB1 with you. For many, that makes playing the same games on those systems less valuable than playing them on the Switch.

I would imagine all console sales spiked up after E3, but naturally Gamestop is hyping the newest platform and Switch probably spiked the most since a ton of gamers don't have one yet. Most gamers know the routine now: if you're within a few months of E3 and want something, wait for E3. Too many times we've seen price cuts, bundles, and new hardware announced at E3.

So I wouldn't take this as meaning "people" are approving of Switch and its future software lineup so much as it was people already sold by its existing lineup waiting for the right moment to buy.

It's marketing. Pokémon go plus set in johto hardly fits the bill for what I'd consider a mainline game.
Do you not consider the remakes mainline games either? The average pokemon buyer likely cares more about this than other recent pokemon games so this is probably a very niche opinion

Part of the reasoning. The other part is from the e3 hype. Plus, that trade in deal lasted less than a week. And was kind of stealth dropped so a lot of people probably didn't even know about it. E3 hype plus trade in deal resulted in monster sales at Gamestop.

It hasn't been "winning" NPDs so people think it's now struggling. Even though it's still selling quite well, especially when you compare year 2 sales of the other consoles.

It's selling fine, and it will sell a lot of units this year, but Nintendo has very high expectations and there are now doubts that they can meet them.
Amazing how many people on this forum don't realize that consoles typically sell their best in their fourth and fifth years.

Only doubled? Why didn't it triple? Looks like this is the end for old Nintendo...

I never understand why people say Switch has no game this holiday when it has Pokemon and Smash Bros, arguably even bigger (sale-wise) than Mario and Zelda from last year. These two games are the most mainstream of Nintendo franchise, way more than your Zelda Metroid DonkeyKong etc.

It's because people wrongly keep saying that Pokemon Let's Go is just Pokemon Go ported to the Switch and that Smash is just a port as well.

Most people aren't really concerned about their holiday sales, it's more the rest of the year in which they don't have too many big sellers.

This holiday will undoubtedly be far larger than last holiday which only had Mario and Xenoblade.

Anecdotal, but I have heard most of my causal game friends who own PS4s and what not say they want a switch post E3. They keep saying they've kinda wanted one and this smash is the one they want to jump in on. Seems like smash was the tipping point for them on the sideline and maybe many others feel the same?

Nope. Smash isn't a system seller. Everyone who wants Smash already owns a Switch.

Or so I was told.

Looks like lots of people dumping their banned Switches at Gamestop, or buying a second Switch for piracy.

Wow, do people still not realize that a lot of these games could not be played on the go with a great control system? And that some of these games may have given people the extra push to pick up an exciting new console that has some of the greatest exclusives ever made? Also in the knowledge that new Smash Brothers and Pokemon games — two among Nintendo's biggest franchises — are releasing this year?

Yikes! That's a bit of a PR disaster for you to deal with.

The downplay seems pretty strong for any positive Nintendo news lately. Did Nintendo hurt entitled gamers feelings that much?

Yeah thanks to their trade in deal for one. I traded in my Day One Xbone for $150 to get a switch, not bad. $250 for an S is even better.

Gamestop had that awesome promotion during e3 week for switches.
Trade in an xbox one x for a switch, or an xbox one s for 250 off of a switch.

During the time, they were selling the xbox one s for 199.

I think it's more of an indication that the effect of a "good" or "bad" E3 is rather marginal. The pre-E3 slump and post-E3 boost are always there. No matter the quality of the announcement. What can amplify said boost are post E3 price drops or bundles. Like, Xbox One doubled sales from May -> June 2015, and i don't recall MS E3 2015 having been all that bombastic. They even focused some of their time on HoloLens!

Again, to clarify, i'm saying the Switch is simply experiencing its regular May -> June boost. Combined with it being in its 2nd full year, you see this big increase, regardless of a lackluster E3 presentation.
Even if they had announced Zelda, Mario and Metroid related content ("won E3"), i don't think the sales bump would have been much larger.
So basically all consoles receive a summer bump. Likely from kids/colleges being out of school. Using that summer job money

Doubled from what? Compared to what time period? Week over week? If so what's the weekly trajectory been so far? A statement like this is pretty meaningless by itself. Surely E3 is going to sell some units, but double the amount of [no information] is still [no information].
