Meh to Talim. I never particularly liked either her playstyle or design, and only ever used her to win mirror money matches against conquest scrubs. I guess it's good she's in, just because she seems popular.

Looking forward to the next reveal. It seems like now would be a good time for the other new character.

Rothion seems like a pretty big indication of CAS characters used for story mode, which is great. Soul Calibur has a huge world and it's less interesting if it's just the 20 main characters that keep running into each other.

A bunch of the story points interweave so it's likely that those characters will fight at those points, but if it's just one of the playable characters, they probably fight an NPC.

Talim was my main in SC2, but in 4 I switched to Cassandra. Might end up maining Sophitia this time.

The T&A in this game is ridiculous. I don't hate it, but it could have been dialed back a notch or two.

Please. His design is closer to that of Ivy than of Necrid. You can't argue that Ivy looks like she fits in with the 16th century aesthetics and then say that ZWEI somehow doesn't. He looks far more normal than Lizardman too, for that matter.

It's German for "two". Also clearly not his real name.
Lizardman is a monster, just like Astaroth. Stuff like them fit the fantastical setting of Soul Calibur like a glove. And again I am not too sure how Ivy is all that removed from Voldo's look.

I know what it means. I just think spelling it out like Z.W.E.I. makes it super odd and stand out JUST to be super odd and stand out. I am annoyed with the exact same thing with F.A.N.G. in Street Fighter V.

In a game with Lizardman, Algol, Voldo, Astaroth, Yoshi...Zwei is too weird?
When Soul Calibur V launched me and a group of like 5 other people that played it locally together all initially assumed Z.W.E.I. was like one of the bonus characters made by guest artists from Soul Calibur IV, so I would say, yeah he is too weird.

He's one of the few sexualised male characters in the whole franchise and surprise, people have an issue with him (but not with the plethora of half naked women). I'm not saying that's why Virtua Sanus thinks he doesn't fit in, but it's too much of a coincidence not to address.
I do not care if he has a bare chest or anything like that and I doubt most do. I have issue with his overly purple look, his Jojo Stand, lots of stuff. His design is just bonkers all around.

Tira's initial crazy green look stands out just about as much. Her weapon was pretty goofy too but it still sort of felt grounded to me in a way Z.W.E.I.'s does not. That said, I generally have liked Tira's redesigns a fair amount for the most part so I would like to see them take another stab at Z.W.E.I., especially with how confident some people here are that he has huge potential.

ZWEI and GROH are pretty similar for me if we're just talking about their visual direction - I'm not going to say they ruin the 'purity' of the franchise or anything with the Necrids and crossover characters running around; but designs like that which are centred less around historical fantasy archetypes and which feel like more interchangeable JRPG heroes that could appear in any setting appeal much less to me, and feel like they miss what can make the series interesting and set it apart.

I feel it's a bit like comparing Kojima Castlevania designs to Aeon from Judgment.

Spot on! Could not have said it better myself.

I wish we could have something more visually consistent like Soul Calibur 1, but at the end of the day, custom costumes and characters pretty much already impact the design in a way we almost all already accept. At least the majority of the designs this time are pretty sensible. We even have a guest character that sorta fits now!

And Ivy is based on a historical fantasy archetype?

I'm not going to say they ruin the 'purity' of the franchise or anything with the Necrids and crossover characters running around

Please stop trying to argue that everybody who dislikes Zwei loves every single other design in the series. Ivy's defaults (though I quite like her 1 and 2 2Ps) and some of Tira's worse costumes are in a similar boat, but I don't see how that justifies wanting to bring everyone down to that level.

But people were never this vocal about either of those designs in the past, and still aren't. But ZWEI seems to have become some poster boy for "not fitting in" with the rest of the cast. He is not that different from other characters dating way back whom people supposedly also think "don't fit in". ZWEI clearly has his own fanbase, why rain on their parade? :/

I personally stopped at "Tira's weapon sort of felt grounded to me". That's when rational talking points left the room, locked the door behind them, and set the building on fire.

Talim, yeay. There is really only going to be 2+1 new characters and that will be it, eh.
This is going to be the fighting game with the least new characters in recent memory. Even Cross Tag Battle, a festival of reused assets, had 4.

I love Talims new look but I do wonder if SC6 is going to be another Tekken 7. The roster doesn't look that interesting.

eh I can see how Tira's weapon feels grounded. Its an oversized Chakram. Considering some of the weird weapons that have existed throughout history, making an oversized version of a smaller weapon is not that crazy all things considered

With Talim added, leaning toward a "yes" now regarding getting this. Should confirmations more or less continue to align with leaks and Cassandra is announced, then I'll be satisfied. Raphael would be nice as well in order to have a fencer if they were to add Amy but as Viola instead, but I'm not counting on it.
I dont think Cassandra will be in the game cause we have Sophitia but Tira is 100% in.
Never stopped them from including both before once she debuted (particularly when there's enough of a difference in how they play).

You don't hula hoop with a chakram.

As I said the idea behind the weapon isn't that crazy and using it as a hula hoop ring is a creative way of incorporating how chakram were handled

The most iconic method of throwing a chakram is tajani, wherein the weapon is twirled on the index finger of an upraised hand and thrown with a timed flick of the wrist.

Are you new to fighting games marketing? SC VI is being pretty well spread throughout the media in comparison to basically any fighting game nowadays. And it's not like they won't show this mode one way or another. They've probably not translated yet.

What? Most recent fighting games have been pretty poorly marketed. SC6 and DBFZ are just two of the culprits. They could be doing a lot more than they currently are to maintain interest between events and character reveals.

I am curious as to what you find appealing about ZWEI. I did not really enjoy or play much Soul Calibur V but out of the new characters he stood out to me as the most ridiculous and goofy. I trust your opinions on these kind of things, so I am confident you can change my viewpoint here.

I don't really care much about design. I care about how the character plays. ZWEI is unique and fun to play as. He was extremely low tier, but a few minor changes and he's a solid mid-tier.

I like characters that are more unique and stand out from the rest of the cast. Yoshi is my main, being one of the few stance-based characters in the game. I picked up ZWEI as my secondary because he also played very different from everyone else, and I liked the stand gameplay.

See, the design is directly what I hate. He felt as out of place in the series as Yoda did IMO. I barely played him so I have no idea if he had some interesting mechanics to him or anything though.

I can see what you mean by that. I guess SCV in general was super unfinished though. Shame!

Outside of his Jojo-like Stand thing I feel like Groh is covering a lot of the aesthetics they wanted with him, so I would be kind of surprised to see him return for this game. If you guys want him in that much though I'm rootin' for ya!

Groh plays nothing like ZWEI. Play style is more important than visual appeal when you're talking about one character replacing another.

Rothion is Sophitia's husband and a blacksmith so it'd be a bit weird to make him a new fighter and then... have them fight?

Unless they're sparring new weapons for her and he's a CAC?

He's also Patroklos' father. While my money would be on him as a CAC, as you stated, I don't think it's out of the question for him to take on Patroklos' move set. Unlikely since I don't think Namco would accidentally reveal him like this, but I wouldn't be super surprised. I would just hope that isn't counted as the second new character.

Probably CaS though...

Rothion would have been blurred if he was actual character like the other names in the screenshot.

I dont remember where I read it but it was about not wanting similar characters. So Kilik would rule out Mina and Sophitia would rule out Cassandra. Nightmare and Sieg were different enough to be both included though.

Mina/Kilik and Sophitia/Cass are just as different as NM/Sieg.

Off the top of my head Mina in SCIV has the same (not counting basic ABKs):
1A (Kiliks 2A+K)
6A+B (Mina's is 3 hits compared to Kilik's being 5 or 6)
3A+B
1A+B
2A+K (Kilik has this as a different input)
4A+K
11A
44AA
33KB (Kilik has this strung to one of his kicks)
44K

This also has nothing to do with overall gameplan either.

The only useful moves being 3A+B, 1A+B, 11A, and 44K. She plays nothing like Kilik. Cass shares little with Soph as well. They play different enough to warrant them being in another game and with characters getting lots of new moves in this game, they might not even share any.

Well, I mean it is a real weapon, just used in a bunch of goofy (read: stupid) ways.

As much negativity Soul Calibur has gotten since III for it's new characters, at least we can all pretty easily agree Namco's other 3D fighter has it a lot worse in that regard.

Groh plays nothing like ZWEI. Play style is more important than visual appeal when you're talking about one character replacing another.
Oh yeah absolutely, I just mean from a design perspective he seems to be cut from the same cloth. Would not be shocked if it was revealed that he was designed by the same core exact group of people as Z.W.E.I.

Yes, looks like a brothel NPC.

Maxi on the otherhand, his clothes are from the same shop as Zwei's.

Ignoring replacements: 2 added 3, 3 added 3, 4 added 2, 5 added 2.

You don't hula hoop with a chakram.
You don't jump on your katana either.

Maxi looked ridiculous in SC1. Fuckin Elvis-lookong nunchaku man with Bruce Lee yelps. Out of place characters are practically the norm.

I don't like it, but I'm not surprised by it.

Hoping some more SE/SB vets make it in. Mina, Hwang, Rock, etc.

Only Maxi's blonde alternate costumes ever really stood out as weird to me, as far as that character goes. That alt looks sick as hell in SCVI though.

I feel like of that list, only Seung Mina has a significant chance at returning for this game. I would personally love to see Rock, but I feel like they never really gave him a mechanical identity that was all that notable compared to Astaroth.

I'm still not convinced, particularly with how the base roster has been playing out in relation to the leaks. Also, after the whole trapping her in an alternate dimension for 17 years crap as an excuse for her omission in V (which allowed for explaining why her niece and nephew turned out so poorly thanks to writing out the only other person who would've been around to raise them), I would be that much less forgiving of yet another absence.

Talim Japanese trailer.

Ignoring replacements: 2 added 3, 3 added 3, 4 added 2, 5 added 2.

SC5 added 3 new characters. Assuming you're counting Viola as an Amy replacement, we don't have confirmation they're the same character, but even if we did, they fight completely different.

I'm actually okay with 2 brand new characters + 2 guest characters, but it's a little disappointing that it doesn't look like we'll hit 30 total (unless we get a second round of DLC).

I'm still not convinced, particularly with how the base roster has been playing out in relation to the leaks. The entire roster has been a bunch of safe bets + Groh. So the only leak that has any merit is the very first one. Taking a look at that leak it doesn't seem very legit:
  • Nintendo Switch port
  • No Xbox One version
  • Console-exclusive characters
  • Character reveal around December 20
None of this happened, so take those leaks with a huge grain of salt as they're very hit or miss.

Are we counting the 4 characters Patroklos, Pyrrha, Alpha and Omega as pure Cass/Sophi replacements? That's extreme.
SC5 is a special case anyway, as some of the kids were quite different from the character they replaced (Natsu/Taki, at least).

I'd also add Dampierre to the new characters of SC5. He's from another game, but it's his first appearance in a main title.

A Setsuka character reveal would be a nice change of pace since her inclusion is kind of up in the air. Asta, Voldo, Cervy and Lizardman are all safe choices so their announcement doesn't do much for general hype. At least for me.

I think the interview is new, but it's mostly info we got from E3. I think his statement really means, "Namco won't commit to an esports push until they see sales of the game."

It's pretty well-known that Namco doesn't have a lot of confidence in Soul Calibur at the moment (at least not compared to Tekken and DBFZ). It makes sense that they want to see how sales do first before announcing any kind of esports plans. It took them 6 months to announce Dragon Ball tournament plans.
