After watching the trailer and reading interviews from Miyazaki, I'm starting to get excited for Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

It definitely looks like a large departure from the last 5 games the studio has released, but in a compelling way.

The biggest takeaway for me is I see parallels with Megaman style progression and combat upgrades. For example, let's analyze the missing ARM of the protagonist, that is replaced by a "trick-weapon" style contraption. According to what we've been told you can equip various power-up items that function on the arm, and can be switched between. The grappling hook in the E3 trailer looks like a lot of fun, as well as important for traversal, but the trailer also showed off other arm upgrades. I can envision taking on different bosses and reaching new areas by locating and equipping the different upgrades. A real fun progression system I imagine! :)

What do you think? I'm starting to feel like the game will be a breath of fresh air, while still delivering an experience only From Software can give.

It's Bloodborne with even less RPG progression and stat management so I'm down no matter what.

I mean, no? Not really?

The entire point of those things is they allow you to access areas you couldn't before. It's Metroid, or to a lesser extent, Zelda.

If anything, I'm thinking that it's a modern Tenchu, which I also like besides Megaman/Rockman.

This has all the makings of being the Dark Souls of FromSoftware games.

Or better yet, why does a game have to be a Metroid or a Zelda or a Mega Man or a Dark Souls or a Castlevania or a whatever.

Always thought that the Dark Souls games' biggest shortcoming was having to accommodate so many different builds and playstyles, holding back the enemy and level design. I'm excited to see what an action game designed around a single character made by modern From Software looks like. I'll probably end up liking this game more than Souls.

I mean, Demon's Souls already borrowed the stage select, killing bosses to get major weapon upgrades based on the boss theme, and general approach to rewarding exploration and stage mastery. That is most of the Megaman experience already, albeit transposed into a very different genre. So I guess I'm torn between saying "what is new?" and "how much closer to Megaman can it get?"

I think it's a pretty standard action/adventure game but with that From goodness, of course.

Though a Mega Man style approach to the game's design could be really cool if that were the case.

Unless the items are dropped by the bosses or obtained from them (or their area) specifically, then I wouldn't say it's Mega Man-like. It would be more Metroidvania, wouldn't it?

I like this take yeah. I'm really excited for the game. FROM is always best when they put new spins on tried and true ideas.

Sounds plausible that it's MM. Interesting take.

I'm willing to give it a chance because I respect Fromsoft so much, but ultimately the more I hear about it the less interesting I find it. I don't want the RPG systems stripped away.

Makes me extra glad The Surge 2 is in development and looks so good. It'll fill the gap. :p

The entire Souls franchise started as dark fantasy Mega Man. I don't see how Sekiro can top that without adding a boss select screen with a tune that plays when you pick a stage.

As far as unnecessary labeling of things go, this is yet another unnecessary label to be applied to the game. I mean, we don't even know if bosses will drop arm upgrades (and even if they do, these upgrades aren't necessarily weapons to be used against other, specific bosses). I'm betting it'll play much more like Bloodborne in terms of area progression and the arm stuff can maybe come into play to open new areas but will mostly serve a purpose in battle, one that isn't necessarily the usage as a weak spot against certain enemies.

A lot of Dark Souls bosses are Megaman bosses. You walk into a single room with the right weapon or upgrades and the boss is waiting there for you, and you can't leave until you beat it.

I wish it was a trick leg so we could have had an "Aha, Sekiro is From Software's take on Planet Terror" thread.

There was a game released on the PS2 with the same name made by SEGA. Really cool game. It was originally a Manga by Osamu Tezuka (there was an anime adaptation as well) called Dororo. The game is grittier though. Wouldn't be surprised if Miyazaki was influenced by Dororo though. He's really into his manga.

I also thought of Dodoro during the initial reveal, but I'm actually not sure if mechanical trick limbs are a common trope in Japanese stories. If they're uncommon enough it's quite likely it was the inspiration indeed.

On topic, the idea of getting new weapons and gadgets from defeated enemies is relatively common (Devil May Cry also does it). To me the thing that makes Mega Man unique is the fact that each weapon is weak to one of the other weapons, and that you can obtain them in any order. This being a Miyazaki game, I'm sure a lot of bosses will be optional and / or not strictly ordered, so there's surely a bit of the latter too.
