I was an effeminate gay boy in rural Oklahoma. I heard racial slurs. I heard homophobic slurs. Being the victim of the latter, I decided I wanted nothing to do with that life - hell, I knew it'd be harmful to me, too! I resolved to become the diametric opposite of almost everyone in that town - to become educated, open-minded, and purposeful in planning my life, and to be my fabulous self without changing anything for anybody. I still live in Oklahoma for the time being, but I've refused to let this place define me or defeat me. As you can imagine, I've been variously described as "uppity," "standoffish," "abrasive." I just ignore them and try to be as kind as I can.

Naturally, I don't think I've ever even entertained conservative sentiments. I've always known which party has my back.

Just make a newsletter and call it the FOX and Friends Weekly Gratitude Awards.

"The award for the most bestest leader capable of dealing with 'INCREASINGLY VOLATILE CLASSIFIED SITUATION IN THE MIDDLE EAST' goes to.. Donald Trump!!"

But did you find the answer to the age old question of why black people can use the N word but we white folk can't? I'm just asking questions

Yes - it's the same reason black athletes speak out about Black Lives Matter but they don't say anything about when a random black mugger kills a white middle class guy, because the institutional violence perpetuated against African Americans by law enforcement is exactly the same as an unrelated petty crime gone wrong.

I can now only describe things based on bizarre false equivalences.

My God.

The fact that a rich white mother is more concerned about black people expressing themselves than police brutality is fragmenting. It's also frightening that she wanted all black celebrities including her words "over paid rich black athletes" to tell young black adults to stop being violent sucks as well.

Her husband doesn't another prominent job anywhere with influence that sees him in a position to screw over POC.

I think one of the best case but still somewhat plausible scenarios is Democrats take the House and Trump decides not to run in 2020 out of fear of losing. I could see him proactively saying the Dems are going to rig the election so why bother running, he accomplished everything he wanted, etc.

There was lots of evidence Trump didn't want to win 2016 in the first place and just wanted to have his own little media company or whatever to shit on President Clinton 24/7 and make easy money. With any luck his narcissism and fear of being a loser could make him tap out for greener pastures.

You can be liberal and religious, the problem is a lot of church's have left liberals behind and embraced what I would argue are non Christian beliefs. I would argue that while the Old Testament may be quite conservative, if you believe in the New Testament and in Jesus , that liberal philosophy shares more principles with what Jesus taught than current conservatism.

This is sorted out mostly via choice of church unless you're Catholic. Plenty of moderate/liberal leaning denominations out there.

N*oG*f was actually where I became liberal because I escaped my own bubble. I imagine that's similar to people in college too.

I went to a Jesuit high school and I would easily recommend it as an option to anyone thinking about private school for their kids regardless of their personal beliefs. Aside from Masses for Christian holidays and a few priest teachers (who primarily taught normal classes like math/English) you honestly wouldn't know it was religious and the academic spirit of the Jesuit tradition dominates far more than anything else. They're also very liberal and strongly focused on social justice, Pope Francis is the first Jesuit pope if you need a general indication of where they stand.

Same here. I used to think that democrats cared more about protecting criminals than normal americans. The thought of institutionalized racism and the circumstances of why people are going to jail/prison never occurred to me.

So they're just as backward as their predecessors but put a nicer face on it?

Francis really has pulled off a PR coup despite the fact that he and his institution still don't support abortion rights, LGBT rights, the ordainment of women, birth control. I guess it's just like the religion itself: people are just eager to believe.

I applaud your courage to be who you are where you are. I was born in Oklahoma and live in Kansas. It always pains me to see people in threads say "well they get what they deserve for voting Republican " when talking about us here in the Midwestern states. There are lots of us who are more liberal in places like Oklahoma and Kansas and the truth is we need to stay and bring in more like us if we want to see change in our country.

Relative to the mean, if you think Pope Francis is as conservative as Pope Benedict I don't know what to say. I don't see the Catholic Church doing an immediate about face on those issues no matter who the pope is. And I don't think that invalidates one's ability to assess and assign relative comparisons to groups within the Church. Personally I think it's a good thing if one of the largest religious institutions in the world puts an increasing focus on social and economic justice as opposed to getting more up it's own ass, even if they remain backwards on many issues I hold dear. I see it more like Red State Democrats, obviously we'd prefer people in lockstep with the rest of the party but you'll still take what you can get.

I'm not arguing (or intending to argue) for Catholicism as a religion. I'm just saying that from my perspective as someone who got sent to one as a kid, Jesuit schools are pretty liberal and academically orientated given that they are part of the Catholic Church.

BREAKING: Trump Administration officially suspends ACA risk adjustment payments. More details in next post. Follow if interested. https://www.cms.gov/Newsroom/MediaReleaseDatabase/Press-releases/2018-Press-releases-items/2018-07-07.html …

Experts believe this can be easily resolved. See below for details. Insurers, consumers and states should petition for a quick resolution that does not harm the public and those with pre-existing conditions. https://www.healthaffairs.org/do/10.1377/hblog20180706.361204/full/ …

Since the funds will eventually be paid, no insurers should withdraw or over-react in the meantime. The Administration should react and address quickly so as not to precipitate a crisis. /end

I wouldn't say that place caused me to vote for Dems, I've been doing that for more than a decade, but 2 years ago it did pull back the curtain on the Bernie stuff I had been exposed to in other social network circles. I thought the Hillary support was ironic, because everything I was seeing at the time made it look like Bernie was better than her at everything and would be the perfect candidate. So I'm kinda thankful for lurking the polithreads at the time or else I'd probably have ended up as some rambuctious "Bernie wouldve won" guy.

Hurt the party? Okay.

They'll also be hurting Republican women who may resort to the coat hanger for abortions and all Americans who have a pre-existing condition. And that's just for starters

Was there a thread recently where a bunch of people showed their ass? A bunch of people I recognize from political threads are currently banned.

That NYT piece is such bullshit

I was just kinda neutral growing up even though school was probably pulling me to the left (that's just what even half accurate history lessons will do!), though I did like the idea of cutting taxes.

W Bush got elected and started doing stuff I didn't care for, and that largely pushed me to the left on a conscious level.

Why do you think Pruitt 'needed' to remove that super polluter truck rule on his last day, considering his successor? His coal fucking successor would either also do it, not undo it, or wouldn't do it but would also undo it. So the framing here that Pruitt 'had to get it in as one last fuck you' feels just a little silly.

It wasn't 'one last fuck you.' It's the systematic and intentional disintegration of every last environmental protection we have, written by the oil and coal and manufacturing lobbies.

So how is a female SC nominee supposed to pressure Dem Senators exactly? I feel like the party that supported Roy Moore hasn't thought this one out yet.

They used the same caveman logic when they picked Sarah Palin in 2008. "The DEMOCRAT party supports women, so they can't criticize a woman without looking sexist. Dur dur."

Um it's because THEY pressure Democrats. You don't support her = you are a racist / nazi / antiwomen etc. They just project constantly.
