Good day ResetERA

Now that I seen Antman and the Wasp (and will again soon), it's time to challenge myself to prepare for the Cruise and if anyone wants to do it as well, be my guest.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it is to rewatch all the Mission Impossible films. To see how insane they got and to see Tom Cruise attempt every stunt himself.

We got 5 films before Fallout which is out at the end of July in the US.
  • Mission: Impossible (1996)
  • Mission Impossible II (2000)
  • Mission Impossible III (2006)
  • Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol (2011)
  • Mission Impossible Rogue Nation (2015)

This thread will not self destruct unless otherwise. Good luck.

Are these available on any US streaming services? Think I've only seen the first.

Picked these up on sale $30 for all 4K digital copies.

Part 1 was great and holds up well.

Part 2... has been tough to get through.

MI4 just hit Netflix.

My wife has a hate-boner for Tom Cruise :(

She refuses to watch any of them.

I really, really hope MI6 is more in the vein of MI1 and MI3 with a greater focus on the characters. I'm scared it's going to be another perfunctory, but impressive set-piece fest.

This scene in MI3 has more tension than anything in the sequels.

I'd be up for this if 2 wasn't such a roadblock for me.
1 is still great though, in my top 3 De Palma films. And the 90s internet talk makes it even more fun today.

You would think that the IMF would stop disavowing Ethan since they do it every movie and they're always wrong .

I've recently rewatched them all actually. Well, I hadn't seen Rogue Nation yet.

If I had to rank them I'd say:

Rogue Nation
MI:3
MI:1
Ghost Protocol
MI:2

Just watched the first one for the first time, can't believe I waited 22 years to see it. The opening job was like if Suspiria were a spy thriller: Creepy medieval town, blue and purple and red lighting, weird camera shots and zooms. Loved the movie. It was weird seeing baby Cruise.

Watched #2 for the first time last night, it was pretty dumb but once it hit the action streak in Act III it was pretty fun, and Thandie Newton might have been the most beautiful woman in film history in that one.

Already seen the rest, #3 is still my favorite. Phillip Seymour Hoffman is a great villain, I always love Michelle Monaghan , and Abrams is a really good director.

I think #2 is the worst but honestly I have Brad Bird's right behind it. I thought the rest were all superior to Brad's.

I think I'd go:

  1. III
  2. I (De Palma style)
  3. Rogue Nation
  4. Ghost Protocol
  5. II (but Thandie!!!!)

Was just doing this myself. I made it through two the other night and feel very proud of my accomplishment.

Is the challenge to watch MI:2 all the way to the end and not abandon ship?

MI2 is the truest of all spy movies because it is in fact a trainwreck disguising itself as a movie, presumably by wearing a rip away rubber face.

Mission Impossible II was the only subpar one. It's actually amazing how high quality this series has been with 6 movies.

Watched them all 2 weeks back ready for fallout.
One of favourite series.
And 2 is great, it's the worst of them but that's not that bad.
Its just a shame so much was cut and the script is so misogynistic.

The Mission Impossible movies have this remarkable ability of being very entertaining films, but extremely forgettable. I've seen all the films 3-4 times, and I still have a hard time recalling the plot.

My favorite is MI3, it has the most memorable moments for me.

I see Mission Impossible 2 as Tom Cruise's "off year."

I mean most of the blame is on John Woo the director, but Cruise with his long hair in a movie from 2002 just looks laughable. It's like his character regressed from the first movie. He was acting like a big shot.

This is a great video for fans of the series.

My rankings are almost the same as his, except I'd swap MI and MI: Rogue Nation (MI > MI5 > MI4 > MI3 > MI2).

I think Rogue Nation is the best, with 3 right behind. I really don't get everyone's love for Ghost Protocol, even the set-pieces feel super weak in that one, not to mention the worst villain of the series (I'd be impressed if anyone in the thread even remembers him, so forgettable)

I've enjoyed the one's after 2 and 3 for being fun action films, but the first is still my favorite as a fun spy film.

The first one didn't age too well IMO. I love all of them tho. Great series

Good man, I just started a rewatch last week. The first Mission Impossible is far more dated then I remember and the final action scene is hilarious in all the wrong ways. But still enjoyable if treated as a time capsule of the mid-90s.

Already went through the first 4 the past two weeks..

MI2 and 3 were worse than I remembered. So glad they found their groove with 4 and 5

But the Dolby Vision, even through digital streams, is done really well on all of them

Mission : Impossible 2 felt like a bad John Woo knockoff; it just happened to be directed by Woo.
The score and cinematography are great, but aside from that movie being the reason we got Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, this is the only other high point.

Ive never seen any of them before and ive seen 1 and 2 the past week.

1 was pretty good, i enjoyed it and its fun to see where all the jokes about it came from. The wire scene where he catches his sweat or is laying flat to not touch the floor. The helicopter explosion where he flies back to the train. I liked it. But it did seem pretty dated.

2 was fun but stupid. motorcycle duel...wtf. the ending where he kicks a gun straight up and turns, jumps, flips, and kills the badguy (who you KNEW wasnt really dead) and kills him before he can pull the trigger. BUT...BUT.... like this guy said, THANDIE NEWTON was the most beautiful girl i've ever seen in a movie ever in this movie. MY GOD....i cant even articulate how beautiful she is.

I'll prob see 3 tonight. 4 and 5 next week.

Impossible, can't (re)watch MI2... what i saw of it was so bad that made me think that the whole franchise was going to be like that with MI1 being the only good one for a very long time.
MI3 and MI4 were actually good spy movies, still have to see 5.

If there was an entry in the series you could safely guess what it would be, it's this one. McQuarrie's back - the RN characters are back. This is Rogue Nation 2.0 I think. Which means it'll probably be good, but I miss the experimentation the series has gone through previously.

Honestly, when all is said and done, RN might be the least interesting entry in the series for me.

But 2 has the best scene in the series.

There it is.

The complete and utter slander MI:2 receives is a fucking crime. It's one of the finest, most beautiful, elegant pieces of shit I've ever seen. Contains two of the greatest scenes committed to film (this one and the injection sequence), and also a motorcycle chase that ends with them flying into the air towards each other and exploding on impact. The slow-mo. The doves. The Australian backdrop. The early-2000s Zimmer. That luscious Cruise hair. The mask-swaps. Get your head out of your asses guys. This is fucking cinema.

I think it is a mistake making a direct sequel to the last movie, I remember enjoying it but can't remember the plot. This applies to all the series I suppose. They should be self contained.
I don't think they are memorable enough, or come out often enough, to have a running plot.
