main reason i never got around to buying a wii u. even in the system's darkest days i would've flipped the coin at it for a discount

but hey, nintendo isn't obligated to bring prices down per industry status quo so it's whatever

Some people said that physical copies are cheaper, but it depends on the country.

I'm Brazilian, so the digital games are way cheaper than the imported physical copies.

Nintendo consoles are premium systems for premium customers. You gotta have lots of money if you want to play with Nintendo.

The only thing that doesn't cost as much is the ability to play online. But you'll be paying that extra $40 in game prices if you play a lot of games. And you don't get the two monthly games that are occasionally decent.

Honestly I am ok knowing that the product I buy holds value. People complaining about the game being 60 bucks a year later, as if the game got worse or replaced by something better. They generally hi down in price when the generation comes to a close it a new entry is on the way.

Games keeping value and still selling keeps the industry healthy. People drop the pricing of their games to drive more sales, not to do the gamers a favor. If it keeps selling why drop the price? Do you think horizon would have the numbers it has if it was still 60? Whether you played Zelda for the first time March 3rd 2017, it today, you will get the same exact experience. The only things that would really drive a price cut in my opinion are,

Bad performance sales wise
- decrease in demand due to:
Console life cycle coming to an end
Sequel coming out.

Most third parties make their own games obsolete by replacing them every year to two years.

There is a reason gta v is the price it is.

People complaining about prices need to think that Zelda is still at 60$ because it keeps selling, the same with Mario and Mario Kart, it makes no sense that Nintendo slashes prices a year later when those games keep charting at the same price they launched. Just to compare Zelda to Horizon as others have done since both are first party titles, released at about the same time, both get full revenue of the sales as opposed to 30% cut that the console manufacturer gets on every game on their platform and close in millions of sales, Zelda probably has made way more revenue that Horizon, let's say of the 8.5~ million copies Zelda has sold on the average of 45$ a copy (Which is probably higher since I believe it's been on sale just once), would be like $382 million on revenue, now, Horizon complete edition, meaning full game + the expansion, is at 20$ on US PSN right now, 7.6~ million copies on the average of $30 a copy, would put it a $228 millions, so there is a fair chance that even when they are about 1 million difference on sales, Zelda could have made almost double the revenue of Horizon. These are rough calculations of course, but it's just to put some perspective.

You buy Nintendo consoles to play Nintendo published games, they put the price and people buy the games for years onto the life span of the hardware, there is no need for them to lower the prices if it keeps charting. On the other hand Sony has full third party support, so they don't need to rely on their first party titles as much as Nintendo does, they are both business and set the prices on their products as they believe will make them higher profits, there is obviously a reason why Zelda is still at $60 and Horizon $20, people are willing to buy it a higher price, nor Zelda or Horizon are lesser games than their were a year ago, it's just that a lot of Nintendo games happen to be evergreen titles that keeps selling and selling and when we are in 2020 and people are just buying their Switch, they will be thinking, what games does this thing have? They will see Zelda, Mario, Mario Kart, Splatoon, Smash, Pokemon, Animal Crossing etc and will buy them just as they buy them now.

Sure, you can think some things are overpriced, and if you don't want to buy something because the price is too high, that's fine, but if people keeps buying it anyway, it will remain that way whether you like it or not.

Yeah it's just nintendo ripping people off really. Recently Horizon complete was like $20 on sale I think and the base game was $10, maybe a few bucks less. Every company except nintendo does sales on a somewhat regular basis.

That just mean everybody who bought Horizon at launch got ripped of, since the game was down to a fraction of the price in less than half a year.

You being alive doesn't mean it's true, you didn't offer anything to support your claim, it's working for them for sure but that's not what I was arguing about and I fail to see why anyone would defend their pricings.
I wasn't even defending their pricing. I was merely telling you were wrong and that Nintendo's pricing strategy would be the same regardless of third party support. Based on you know, actual historical evidence.

If you live in the UK/A Commonwealth country, I find www.ozgameshop.com has decent prices & shipping

These indie titles are cheap but worth it (I'm sure theres more but I can vouch for these):
Kamiko
Celeste
Snipperclips
Stardew Valley
Slime-san

I'm waiting for those actual historical evidence that prove competition doesn't affect price.

Unlike games for other consoles, Nintendo titles not only hold their value but in some cases even go up in value when they stop printing them. Especially if there's something unique about it, for example if you picked up a Zelda OOT gold cartridge on release day for 60 bucks, it's value over time had raised to like $500 bucks at one point.

Where ya been OP? You have to pay a premium on Nintendo consoles since the N64 days. I remember buying Shadow of the Empire for $60 when PS1 games were $40.

I'm also a recent Switch owner but I was already aware of the "Nintendo Tax" regarding their games when I made my purchase so my solution to the problem was to purchase my games physically and used in order to save money and that has worked out well so far for the 6 games I bought so far but I still think Nintendo is full of it for hardly lowering their game prices if ever.

If I opened up a food truck (fun fact I actually have one) near wendy's and served deluxe gourmet cheeseburgers for 10 dollars, would I be seen as expensive or just servicing a different market if I didn't come down to Wendy's burger prices?

It's incredible how some fans actually take pride in Nintendo's games not dropping price. Yeesh.

I don't see anyone doing that.

However I'll say this: I've never worried about my games not holding value. When the Wii U died, I sold my physical library at almost full price and I was happy about it.

Wii? You can't even buy Brawl new anymore... That would have to do with customers not selling the product back so much that there is a desperate need to get rid of stock from used bins.

And that is common on Nintendo systems too. Many keep their Nintendo games and don't often sell them back, so that means the aftermarket value is much higher than most because there's less in circulation.
Yeah it was brawl and it still in the glass case with a $59.99 sticker on it. I don't know why they haven't clearances all their Wii games

Not doing that legwork for you. Do it yourself if you weren't alive back then.

This is Nintendo's strategy. Deal with it. It has been for 30+ years. I don't see it changing unless they go heavy into gaas. Their games continue to sell. Why should they follow Microsoft or Sony and reduce their marquee games to $10 months after release? It just doesn't make sense for them. Because again, their games sell for YEARS.

I am holding onto my poor wallet while reading this thread...

I guess my plans to get a Switch has been delayed. I can only afford games by buying them on sale most of the time and getting a Switch would kill my wallet it seems like.

I don't take pride in it it just makes sense from a business angle where they dwell at with their prices. If that's all you got is 'geesh Nintendo fans' maybe you should decline to contribute to the discussion.

Why did you make a nonsense post about how Nintendo would lower prices of their games if there was more third party support? What was this exactly based on? Your intro to econ class?
I already pointed out what it's based on in the past few pages, stop being so disingenuous for Christ's sake.

Yeah, I don't think I'd be buying any games if they cost 80 USD. I think most Americans would riot if they had to pay that too.

Nintendo games on their portable lines, for example rarely dropped their price unless they were mega-bombs. Their portable systems has the 3rd-party equivalent(especially during the DS-era) to the PS systems you usually see.

And I've pointed out you were wrong since they've used this same pricing strategy regardless to third party support. The Wii actually did have good third party support. And what did Nintendo do? THE EXACT SAME THING.

You are in fact the one being disingenuous. But you keep on believing what you want. I don't think there's any getting through to you. And it's moot anyway. The pricing strategy has been this way for a long time. It's not changing. IF/WHEN third parties start releasing more games (whatever metric you're basing this on, I have no idea), lets regroup then. You let me know when the support is there for Nintendo to start lowering their prices. I'm guessing I won't hear from you because prices will remain the same and you'll just say, yeah well they don't have enough third party support (whatever that is)

Thank you, now are you sure their portable systems were as supported as PlayStation consoles? Japanese developers were on board for sure, but western? I'm not sure you can say yes for them.

Damn this thread is eye opening.

GCU dying ruined everything. I originally wanted to go full digital on Switch but this has me rethinking things. I will still be fully digital on Smash and PKMN19 tho, those will never leave the system.

Bright side is saving on memory space but I really don't wanna be switching carts.....

Anything to save a buck though.

Will say that they do hold good trade in value though. Just traded in Mario Kart 8 deluxe and got $30 in credit.

But yeah, there has been a lot of switch games I passed on and bought on another platform because the prices are bonkers

What is this sudden narrative shift attempt? Nintendo are now only premium consoles?

Ridiculous...their consoles have always been relatively cheap and affordable. A kid could always find a way to own a Nintendo console.

Then they could buy or borrow, or rent games or figure out ways to play whatever the fuck they wanted without crying about high prices.

Nintendo tax? Their games are 60 just like Sony or MS games. The others slashes their software prices quicker and gets deeper discounts, but there's no such thing as Nintendo tax. That's a ridiculous thing to say.

Just a figure of speech. And if he didn't mean it that way, it sure as heck works as one.

The consoles, yes, but Nintendo games are infamous for never depreciating in price unless they're exceptionally bad. Like Other M. Most popular games can be found at a steep discount 6-12 months down the line, usually for $20-$30. Nintendo's games float at $60-$50. Game-wise, it's double the price.

Welcome to the Nintendo tax. Recently I tried to buy a new set of joy cons, however after I saw the price (£70 pounds? Piss off Nintendo) I did not buy it on principle. Instead, I traded in Zelda and bought it for £35. No way was I going to pay that much for some cheap plastic.

Yep, games are a hobby and luxury items. If you can afford or justify paying the asking price, that's great. If not, get a different hobby.

As a kid and Uni student, games were still my hobby but I didn't buy many because I couldn't afford them. I didn't go around calling companies anti-consumer and stuff.

That's just the reality of it.

What a shit excuse to make. Outside of exclusives shit does depreciate on Nintendo, as a switch owner myself some of the prices are ridiculous.

Unless I really like a game, I always trade or buy used anyway. No way I want to reward them for thier obnoxious pricing strategy, especially for digital.

I can kind of get the complaint applying to Nintendo's first-party titles in general, but I don't know why anyone would expect BOTW to be discounted.

Nintendo simply hasn't included itself into the sale culture that Steam started off, and that Sony & Microsoft have joined in on to some degree. If their games continue to sell for years at regular price, then why would they change?

I get it, I certainly would love seeing some drastic sale prices on some Nintendo games, but I also fully understand why they do not go down that route.

Western developers barely developed for handhelds in the first place sans some licensed games, small titles that would be classified as indie games, and that very brief period that bigger western companies took the PSP seriously. Japan always took the handheld market more seriously than western companies especially during the seventh gen when they barely developed for home consoles. Though enough about that.

The point is that Nintendo's portable line always had great 3rd-party support in general meaning there were competition between which titles to get. 3rd-party games, no matter how successful they were went on sale frequently or was discounted, much more so than Nintendo's first-party titles. As someone here already mentioned in this thread MK7 is still full priced despite it being seven years old. Various Pokemon games are still full priced.

Even if a hypothetical Nintendo system had every game available, Nintendo still wouldn't perm-discount their games unless they bombed horribly or they want to place them in their selects line years later. That seems to be their MO for decades, even with their handhelds.

Buy a Sony or MS console if you expect the games to drop in prices weeks later. Nintendo holds value.

But we are talking about third party support comparable to PlayStation consoles, you could even make an arguement for the Switch having great third party support currently but when compared to PS4 it isn't really true.

Even if a hypothetical Nintendo system had every game available, Nintendo still wouldn't perm-discount their games unless they bombed horribly or they want to place them in their selects line years later. That seems to be their MO for decades, even with their handhelds.
Now this I disagree with, I don't think there is anything special about Nintendo games compared to the other platform holders that makes them immune to slashing prices if they had their support, if I'm looking for an open world RPG and there is BOTW going for $60 but another 4-5 games going for $30 then I'm go for the cheapest ones, that is of course if I'm interested in them, hell even if there weren't anything like that from third parties you would still be able to find more games you're interested on and you could spend your money on them.

Now that is not the only reason of course bu I think it's the biggest one.
