Anyone know anything about Sturmey Archer 3 speeds? My cable broke, and the piece that attaches to the hub got lost when it did....I bought a replacement cable and that specific part is a mark 2. It's too small, so I'm thinking I need a mark 3. That makes sense right? A mark 1 would be smaller and not the right part to purchase?

With a cheap road bike, what could I do to get the most bang for my buck out of it? Getting the bike fit to me, good tires/tubes, new drivetrain, clip ins? Or do those costs add up enough to the point where I should just get a new bike?

I'm currently riding a 5 or 6 year old Giant, only thing I've done to it is move the seat post up and replace the tubes and the back rubber when it got a non-repairable puncture. Not looking to be a tour rider or anything, but to just get a little more performance out of my rides.

I would definitely go for pedals and shoes.
You can use those on a new bike that you could use later on.
Plus the bikefeel is radically better imho.

You're never sure if a drivetrain might be interchangeable with a bike you'd like later on. For instance disc or non disc etc.
Wheels are by far the best but also the most expensive upgrade and once again, not something that is always interchangeable.

I had my first crash this morning since I started cycling.

I was on the cyclepath and was crossing the slip road to rejoin the path. Someone from the opposite direction didn't see me coming (sun in his eyes I think) and we collided head on and he went right onto my side of the path.

He came off okay, but I was gushing blood from the nose and severely winded. It teaches me a lesson for trying to break my Strava PRs though.

Anyone making a Tour de France topic? First drive was already exciting. Gavira win, and favorites already losing a lot of time. Froome already almost a minute.

Nasty. Hope you're okay and the bike is too.

Ah that sounds bad, hope you are ok and no lasting damage, yeah going to fast when there is some traffic can be dangerous.

Man when I climb even low gradients, like 4-5 % I can't keep my HR in zone 2... I assume the only thing that will make this better is climbing more, it sure doesn't help that I'm 90 kg... I think today I just destroyed me because I took a "Gravel Path" that had 20+ Gradient for a short time and I nearly died reaching the top of that short climb... Afterwards I couldn't get my HR back into zone 2 except if I did nothing. Still did 30km with 450m elevation change.

It's that nasty it hurts but you have to do it to improve, I don't have the hills some of these guys do, but at a heavier build than you what I do have can sometimes be enough on my daily commute.

Anyway stats for the month...

Frontieruk nice stats! And a couple of nice bikes there too. BTwin bikes are hidden gems, a lot of bike for the cash but because they aren't a sexy brand they get overlooked all the time.

Ugh... so I did my priming ride on the trainer. Was hotter than Satan's asshole in there but it went OK.

Will be nuclear hot tomorrow so I'm really hoping I have the fitness to get past the two really serious hills before I completely melt. I don't do well on the road bike, so wish me well you waxed fashionistas. :P

Me thinks he doth protest to much... We all know you have the largest collection of color coordinated cycling Clothing this side of team sky.

Seriously though good luck tomorrow and keep your fluid intake high.

Ha, my jersey collection is getting pretty large, but I haven't yet started co-ordinating.

I'm pre-loading fluids whilst carb loading for the rest of the night, so I'll probably weigh about 5kg more by tomorrow, but at least I'll be fuelled / watered.

I'm fine discussing it here :p

Fireworks from the start, I'm loving it.
Really curious to say how this plays out. Sky will have to go on the offensive again.

So i have decided to ride a bicycle again after a solid 15 years of not touching one and I'm really enjoying it so far. Have a few questions though.

I've been doing about 5 miles a day since I've started (last week). I'm exhausted since I'm fresh of the couch somewhat. Is that a good start? Also my hands want to get a little tingly and such after riding, like say 30-45 minutes. Going to consult my physician soon due to carpal tunnel concerns from my profession, but would adjusting the handle bars help? Too much pressure on my hands maybe? I think I may need to take this into a shop to get it fitted for my height and size or would that be a waste of money?

What sort of bike is it? If it's drop handlebars (a racing bike) then you could try putting a second layer of bar tape on the bars. If it's flat bars (mountain bike or hybrid) then I'd try some gloves with a bit of padding on the palms. It also helps to adjust the position of your hands on the bars periodically.

Flat bars, hybrid bike. Ok, I'll get some gloves and adjust how I grip the bars every so often as I ride. I'll see if that takes care of the problem for me. Thanks!

On San Juan island which is perfect for long varied rides - there are several ways to circumnavigate the island with lots to see. I'm very bad about stopping to take in the views or take pics but managed a couple this time - also my new ride - Cannondale Quick 2 Carbon.

Had a great ride yesterday but too much weight on handlebars - u needed to scoot the seat back an inch or two and today was perfect as result.

Frontieruk nice stats and bikes, yeah but I can't come home completely smashed after a ride now, since I have a newborn at home, so I have to be a bit carefull with what I'm doing ;)

Rode my first metric century this year, in honor (?) of TdF. I think my mountain biking is paying dividends, I'm way better at climbing than I used to be. And I'm heavier than last year too.

I'm sure you're all waiting with bated breath... lol

I survived. Was fucking hot out there ( Yes Americans I know it's not hot by your standards, but I've cycled in hotter over there and it didn't feel as bad :P ). I really feel for the people who started late, because getting to those hills in the afternoon is going to fuck a bunch of people up.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think I was slightly faster this year (like, a couple of minutes), but only because I was a bit smarter on getting into groups etc. I was most definitely slower up the hills. I was half naked by the top of one of them and would have considered fully naked were it not for the chance of DQ!

Got completely isolated for the last 10k which was a bit frustrating but I think I managed my pace OK.

i bought a giant talon 3 last year around black friday time to begin learning to mountain bike but didnt start using it heavily until this april and now 250 miles later I feel like I should've gotten a full suspension :( should I stick it out and keep using this hardtail? I dont want to buy any upgrades for it because I'd rather save for a whole new bicycle rather than updating to a dropper post, a new fork and new wheels (which will come out to the price of the bike anyway) any good full suspension bikes in the 1500-2000 range? I'm looking at the specialized camber or the stunt jumper alloy and I can't find much on youtube

Oh my god my knees are shot. No idea why. I did the same ride on Friday and Saturday. Same distance, same route, both knees feel like I just did back to back centuries, but was less than 30 miles each ride.

Why?

I rode (and still ride) hardtails for 20 years. What exactly are you doing that makes you think you need a full suss?

What makes you feel you need full squish? As Psycho said, hardtails are fine and can still be super comfortable.

I rode (and still ride) hardtails for 20 years. What exactly are you doing that makes you think you need a full suss?

I got in a crazy argument with someone at work about this. Middle aged guy in not great shape was looking to start mountain biking in the summer. He'd never done it before and was last on a ten speed steel road bike more than a decade ago. So I suggested some easy rolling trails and parks to learn the basics of cadence, braking and tabletopping, etc. And I suggested he look at a decent quality hardtail with front suspension, because:

A) On an $800 Trek or similar hardtail, you could ride practically any trail just fine. Certainly every single beginner course.
B) If he didn't like it, the hardtail would make much more sense as a commuter/cruiser
C) If he got into it - he could upgrade or start a collection.

My other colleague went nuts though, and was exasperated that I wouldn't recommend a full suspension Trek/Cannondale/Scott etc. And honestly I think there's something to be said for learning what terrain does to suspended and rigid bike geometry through your body. There's good muscle memory lessons to be learned from feeling those impacts and geologies.

I've lost count of the amount of people who I've spoken to who say they need a full suss for "comfort". Suspension isn't for comfort, it's for grip / trail compliance.

Learn to pick your lines, learn to know how to unweight / pop over obstacles. Hell, load up youtube and watch trials riders doing incredible stuff on road bikes. What's most important is skill, not necessarily the bike you're riding.

Hell, look at what dirt jumpers do with bikes that have absolutely no suspension at all.

I'm a handtherapist. There are quite a few things that can cause numbness in your fingers. Which fingers are affected? It's not necessarily your carpal tunnel (median nerve) that is causing the issue.
If it's your pinky/ ring finger, it's more likely to be an ulnar nerve compression. If its the middle/ index finger and thumb it's median nerve (carpal tunnel).
Gloves are actually designed to tackle these varying pressure points.
Don't get gloves that have padding in places where you don't need it. It'll only cause more issues.

"Flossing" while riding can also help. Take your hand off the bars for a bit and move you wrists forwards and backwards. Stretch and flex your fingers.
This pulls your tendons and nerves through their tunnels and sheaths, alleviating pressure.

I tried to be mindful of moving my hands to slightly different positions during my ride today and not using a death grip on the bars. Seems to have helped. Its mainly my thumb and first finger, sometimes the middle finger as well. Going to try flexing my hands a bit to as you suggested

My entire hand went completely numb earlier. lol

I had to change gear with my right hand instead of my left... was sorta scary.

Nice work everyone on their recent rides. Seems like lots of people have been pushing themselves. I had a weekend off the bike but did go for a swim in the North Sea. Pretty cold.

I grew up in Scotland and adults used to make us go in the North Sea till "we got used to it."

I did love swimming at Gullane and Portobello tho.

My stats from last month btw.
A decent month, though I would've liked to ride a bit more.
I'm mainly happy about the number of PR's... Carbon wheels are crushing it :P
