In the original Captain Toad, there were only two zoom options. The default super zoomed out view, and a zoom-in option that was super close up with El Capitan Todd and more available for appreciating the cute details in the game than for practical gameplay application. I say this because when the camera was that zoomed in in the original, it was tough to see what enemies were around and nearby. Some levels were better about this than others.

Like this:

The game is set up with little explorable dioramas of worlds. So, it makes sense that a super zoomed out mode is useful in checking out the facets of the levels on display. But for me on my TV the default zoom required a bit of squinting to easily follow Toad, and I ended up playing it mostly on the GamePad. Even there I felt like the default zoom required a lot of squinting. It was just a bit too zoomed out. So I often used the over-zoomed option but it wasn't very useful for gameplay. Also, in being so zoomed out, I found spinning the camera and thus the entire level kind of dizzying at times in gameplay.

The Captain Toad port has a midzoom option. This is a game-changer for me personally. It means I can zoom out extra if I need to get a fuller sense of the level, but mainly view from a comfortable (to me) zoom. I played most of the original game on the GamePad, but will gladly play it again and attempt to 100% it given this QOL improvement.

Anyone else psyched about this addition? Apologies if these aren't the most representative images, but hopefully they convey my point.

Paging Jonneh who touched on this issue in his early 2018 thread https://www.resetera.com/threads/how-would-you-improve-captain-toad.16661.

-

Also, Jonneh confirmed ITT that gyro can be turned off, and is off by default!

Hell yeah! I'm usually a gyro guy too but I never felt Captain Toad needed it so I'm thankful that it can be toggled now.

Oh, the gyro camera control can be toggled off?

They're even off by default

What's great about this is that in the original game you couldn't turn off gyro and had to sit still when playing. So this removes that issue.

Didn't know that was new.
Remember always having to mess with the zoom levels in the original so a mid level zoom would be nice.

Yay - a Nabbit thread highlighting Nintendo tidbits I wasn't aware of! :)

Does the 3DS port have equivalent zooming options?

I hope to christ the motion control camera tilt is either gone or has an option to turn off in this port. It drove me nuts in the original.

How are they going to handle the few asymmetrical portions of the gameplay where the Gamepad screen showed something different? That's my biggest concern with the port.

OMG. I forgot all about that. That was another big part of what took me out of the game and why I played on the GamePad with it held perfectly unmoving in my lap. Paging Dark1x if maybe he can confirm it's out. I think it must be given the Joy-Cons.

I was afraid gyro camera control will be the default and only option. After playing demo I'm strongly considering buying Switch version even when I have Wii U copy of the game.

What's in the demo anyways? I didn't download it since I already prepurchased the game, lol.

One problem I had with the original Capitan was that the horizontal camera control using the L and R buttons was the wrong way around and there was no option to invert it. Have they changed that in this version?

That's where I'm at. No gyro + midzoom = much better end player experience I have to imagine.

So just to make sure I'm reading this right, I can turn off the gyro camera? Played the demo and it infuriated me, but otherwise I'm interested.

I don't want to sit perfect still to play. :(

Apparently so yes! It was an issue for me with the original game.

El Capitan Todd gets even better. Honestly the only thing this game needed is about 10 more Odyssey levels, and bring back the 3D World levels from the Wii-U game, it would have been my GOTY.

1) Are the Odyssey levels they included better than the 3DW ones from the Wii U game?

2) I love 3DW as a game but IIRC the 3DW levels in Capitan Todd for Wii U were basically ported levels with not much to do and not built around Toad's moveset originally. Was there more to them that I'm misremembering?

The zoom is awful. When playing in portable the zoom is too high or too low. It would be better to choose one automatically as all the other games do, or allow you to use an analog or the touchscreen to select the zoom with a precise method.

The Odyssey levels in Captain Toad are actually Captain Toad levels, so they're automatically better.

Awesome, thanks for the info. BTW, I'm trying the demo and see this cursor on the screen. It's distracting. Can I turn it off?

All 3 zoom levels in the port are bad? Or do you mean in the Wii U game?

The three zoom settings in the 3DS version HELP IMMENSELY.

I play almost exclusively in the middle of the three. Maybe a few seconds in the furthest away view, if I just want to gander at the cute intricate nature of the stages.

Yep! Game changer.

Switch version. In many stages you have to frequently switch manually between the 3 different zoom option.

Sometimes one works best, sometimes the other. In some cases you need to check some details so you need to change it even more.

Honestly I didn't even notice the middle camera setting was new, but now I can appreciate it even more. I don't even know how I was able to handle playing without it on the Wii U version.
