Getting near the end of the game. About 40 hours so far and haven't used a guide. Was quite stuck recently because I didn't realize a particular thing you receive opens a door. Can finally dash properly lol. Awesome game. Will probably finish it tomorrow. I'm at 77% complete according to the place that tells you. Somehow I've missed a ton despite running around this damn map 100 times. Crazy.

It's no super Metroid but it's pretty damn good.

I feel like I could get the patterns down for the final final boss pretty quick for most of its attacks, but it is hard to work through it all having to go through the final boss every time. I can get through it on a fairly regular basis but some attacks are more random and I can't deal reliably with them yet.

I don't like when you're up against a huge enemy and there is no way to block or go past or over them. So you just get hit. Like the big guys with clubs.

There is a very good guide located at: https://holdtoreset.com/hollow-knight-guide

There are some spoilers, but I've found that this guide will normally tell you only what you need to know and leaves some things for you to discover on your own.

but to answer your question without spoiling too much...
You need to return back to City of Tears and go into the Soul Sanctum to defeat a boss, after you defeat said boss he will give you a new ability that you will need to progress into the next area.

I was waiting on the soul master to level up first. Is it recommended to have a few nail upgrades first before the fight?

It's not happening for me. Sometimes I do ok with dodging, but his attacks are way too annoying. Like the falling fireballs for example. They seem so easy to dodge yet I get hit more often than not. After 80 hours over 2 complete playthroughs I don't think I have it in me anymore to get him.

The falling fireballs are annoying to be sure. What I did was save my shadow dash for them, so I'd normal jump over his dash attack, wait for the fireballs to start coming down, and then shadow dash through them when they came down so that whether I was in a safe spot or not they'd still miss me. As for the other attacks:

The dive attack/dash with flames: Normal jump away from the dive, air dash in the opposite direction, towards where he'll end up, and pogo him once (you have to be kind of high because he stretches upward a little bit before disappearing)
Flame pillar attack: run away from him for the first two pillars, then back toward him for the second two pillars and get two hits in while he is floating in the air. You want to avoid having a pillar pop up underneath him so you have a nice spot to land.
Bat projectile attack: make sure to keep enough distance so you have more time to react, normal jump over the first two bats and shadow dash through the third bat. You should avoid the fourth bat doing this and land next to him for one or two hits.

How difficult will it be to get the true ending without fully upgrading the nail? I don't think I'll ever be able to beat the stupid coliseum. I have it upgraded to the level that's just before the final one.

You only need to beat two of the three challenges in the colosseum. Are you having trouble with the first one?

So far yeah. I made it to the tier where the two knights that toss knives are on two platforms to the left and right above you and you have one platform in the middle below them.

I have a ton of charms. Whats the ideal setup?

Jesus Christ, that Grey Prince Zote fight at higher levels is just...

The monster spawn RNG and the unpredictability of some of his moves... Is that fake-out leap slam telegraphed in any form or am I just fucked if I dashed already?

I don't know of any ideal or cheese methods, but charms that give you range and soul on hit are extremely useful in most situations. Quickslash is also a personal favorite. That way you can hit most things before they hit you. There's usually enough time to heal between phases so you don't need to worry about stuff like Quick Focus.
The easiest way to get rid of a lot of the ground-level enemies is just to unleash your vengeful spirit spell twice.
Also, if you haven't gotten used to bouncing off enemies by using downward slash yet, now is the time.

Is traitor lord considered the hardest boss in the game ? Just randomly stumbled in and not sure if I should go back and retry atm :)

No. His attack patterns are actually really easy to read and counteract (if you stay close at least). Him hitting for 2 masks does make it a very punishing fight until you can read him, though.

Is there any downside to equipping (don't have the game atm) the thing that slot into notches ? And how do you open more notches ?

Notches a few notches are drops from boss fights and others are purchased from a certain vendor.

No downsides to charms, unless they explicitly say so on the charm itself.

Just watched another vid that shows what you're talking about and it seems easy there, but it's like the fight moves a lot faster in real time :p Think I will try a few more times. I know that the puff phase only happens if you took 25% of his health and I only got to 50% once.

Yep, I did get that!

Though I didn't yet beat the boss at the bottom of Mantis Village, and I didn't encounter a boss in Fungal Wastes (not sure if there is one...I just assumed there is a boss in each area but I could be wrong

Awesome, then you are on your way ;)

The
Mantis Lords at the bottom of Mantis Village are an optional boss fight, however after beating them you get a very significant nail upgrade.

I was waiting on the soul master to level up first. Is it recommended to have a few nail upgrades first before the fight?

I did the
Soul Master with the nail upgrade that extends it's range
, as long as you can figure out his pattern movements it is tottally doable :)

Good Luck!

Finished the game with 107%. Loved every minute of it, it's my GOTY so far.
Only regret is that I chose to banish Nightmare Grimm and missed out on probably the best fight of the game. Will play it again and I'm definitely looking forward to that fight :)

Did anyone find the hidden room in the
Spirit Glade? There are a bunch of memorials inside that can be read. Is it a backer reward or what?

All of the spirits in the glade, some of the spirit NPCs you can find around the game world, some of the regular NPCs (like Cloth), and all of the warrior spirit bosses were designed with input from Kickstarter backers. Some Kickstarter backed content isn't in the game yet, but should be added along with playable Hornet and the last content pack.

Got the Soul King! At first I was scared, but with some patience I got to evade all of its attacks and eventually he fell. That was satisfying as fuck.

Now to explore shit

Oh, that's really cool.

And now the greatest mystery: Why is Zote still yammering away
now that Bretta is gone in my game?
He's talking to the air. LOL

Dumb question, but I just started the game and got to the Cartographer. Should I just go through the game as normal at this point? The map isn't really showing me where to go.

Most obnoxious regular enemy award goes to:

Primal Aspid

latest

Though, only because there is no upgraded version of these bastards:

Crystal Hunter
latest

The triple-goo attack from Aspids, with the center ball always targeted directly at you, makes it impossible not to get hit if you go for an attack while they're shooting. At the same time, with their high firing frequency and tendency to keep you on distance it's hard to find some timing.

At least they die in 1-hit to Shade Soul with Shaman Stone charm or Charge attacks (with maxed Nail).

Meanwhile, Crystal Hunters are just pure bullshit in platforming areas already filled with spikes. That path to the Descending Dark upgrade in Crystal Peak is just the worst. On my first playthrough, I immediately attempted this after getting the Crystal Heart and, boy, did it cost me a bunch of lives.

I love how you can actually reflect their projectile...only for that to barely matter because they don't get hit by it and you still can't jump into the crystals it creates.
You can pogo the crystals.

Speaking of that place, can you actually kill the guardian? Of course I tried, and I got fucked up.
You need to get rid of every other spirit in the garden first, then leave and come back to do this. You'll probably die a bunch of times in the process and you can get more than enough essence elsewhere, I don't think it counts for completion either.

This game has sucked me in like few games have recently. I've cleaned up most of the non DLC content already and can beat the game but I also just started the Grimm Troupe last night.

Finally decided to wrap things up and get the "bad" ending. 48 hours and 95% completion (some of you are really fast!)
The Hollow Knight
was surprising easy, especially compared to
Watcher Knight and Traitor Lord
, whew they kicked my ass for a long time. Now to find my last 2 shards, and tackle the Grimm Troupe!

Not many games keep me hooked after the credits. Hollow Knight is fantastic

would it have killed them to put a bench outside of traitor lord's boss room

There is something that can really help you with that part of the fight... I have spoilerd it for you just in case.

If you have enough dream essence you can get an ability that teleports you to a specific spot you've marked. Saved me a ton of time on that boss.

Now that I've put a bit of distance between myself and this game, I've been wondering what its success can contribute to future games beyond those built by Team Cherry.

One idea I keep coming back to: this game is a great execution of a hand-drawn visual style that I think could suit a 2D Mario game. Part of that comes down to its particular brand of platforming, but a lot of it also has to do with how good collisions between the character, enemies, and the environment felt in this game. The cute but also menacing enemy designs are also a factor. Hollow Knight feels like a more relevant comparison to Mario than most other games, even recent examples like Wonder Boy and Cuphead.

Anyone else think a 2D Mario drawn and animated in a similar style could be really great? Obviously a 2D Mario could lean a lot on prior illustration styles used in old artwork for the NES/SNES games, 3D World, and Odyssey, but I've always struggled to imagine how that style could be animated and what kinds of visual effects could be employed in the game environments, and after playing Hollow Knight, I'm extra bullish on a hand-drawn 2D Mario game.

WTF... I just discovered there's a super secret 4th ending.

Yeh, just got done with it for 100% achievements. Wasn't fun to do at all though and basically a thing you just have to look up on wikia.

Gotta say, Í really appreciate that this game has proper high resolution art that makes the game beautiful to look at in 1080p. I mean, I can tolerate lower resolution pixel-art but, man, this is just a thing of beauty. And the art direction and animation is great on top of that.

I just beat Brooding Mawlek, I was very strong, I think I was supposed to meet him earlier, I literally destroyed the poor guy, it was not a fun boss fight, this is the problem when the game gives you a lot of freedom, boss fights which were to be challenging become very easy if found too late.
So far I have beat in that order
Hornet , False Knight , Mantis Lords , Dung Defender , Soul Master , Xero , No Eyes , Brooding Mawlek
and except by the bolded ones, where I was really learn to play,I was expecting a lot of hard boss fights, but so far has been a walking in the park.I hope they have been the easiest.

I had a much better time with Hollow Knight than BotW, but I'm probably in the minority there. After 100%'ing the game on Switch, I immediately replayed the entire game on pc. I just couldn't get enough.

I only finish 2 game with my Switch,Super Mario Odyssey first and Zelda BotW,I think I am still halfway in Hollow Knight, but I am sure is by far the best game, not even a contest for me.

Hey I got that ability but since I haven't played in a week or so I totally forgot haha. Finished the fight right after that post but thanks for reminding me :D

Took a few attempts but finally beat
The Radiance
, decided to go full blue health and it worked a treat.

This game is a definite 10/10 for me, I really hope we see a sequel. I'll settle for my 104% completion, with Octopath a few days away now. What a ride

First time playing this game and I chose to play on the switch. Bought this game for a few business trips I have coming up. Wow.... this game is perfect on switch. I don't notice any performance drops and is this game 60fps?

Side note I just beat the
Mantis Lords
boss. That has to be the most fun I've had with a boss fight in quite some time. Reminds me of Bloodborne bosses but in a 2D format. Took me a good 8 tries to beat it, each time improving just a bit more.

This game is worth more than $15.... easily. I would have paid double.
