I beat
The Radiance!!!!!

Yes!!!! Screw you, you royal pain in my ass! Holy balls I'm shaking, lol. It was super annoying having to
beat Hollow Knight over and over
, but it got to the point where I beat him with my eyes closed. That last boss though....damn! Wooohoooo!!!!

Speed Force
Should I use a guide to play or just drop the game? I'm getting pretty bored five hours in. The backtracking/wandering aimlessly to find a map is pretty annoying. The game hands out upgrades at a pretty slow pace compared to other Metroidvanias. I think I've faced three bosses and none really left an impression. The environments are dark and repetitive. 30 hours to beat the game seems insane to me with how most Metroid games are paced. Just feels directionless and not particularly compelling. I know people say it gets better, but I never really had to wait for Metroid or Castlevania games to hook me, they had me from the start.

also not the biggest fan of the art style but I'm quickly becoming cranky guy who hates everything

Dream Zote can be a tough sob with his combinations sometimes, I'm having a blast fighting him.

I've beaten him 5 times but after the 3rd or so I had to switch my charms to make the fight as short as possible. Unbreakable strenght + quick slash + mark of pride + longnail... I don't know if I can go back to default nail with normal speed lol

Killing his minions as soon as he spawns them and using shade soul to clear the "bombs" as been my strat so far. His patterns are easy to dodge but the problem is if you get caught between him and something else.

I'm about 26 hours in now I think and it's starting to overstay its welcome for me.

I'm a huge fan of this genre but I'm starting to feel that this game is just too sprawling and obtuse for its own good within its otherwise fairly rigid genre confines if that makes sense. In theory, this should all feel like a really big adventure but in practice I find myself somehow torn between bored by the languid pace of discovery and frequency of upgrades and being annoyed/frustrated as fuck by the bosses.

There's so much to love here and I powered my first 'fuck this I'm dropping the game' only to enjoy it more but the last 10 hours I've spent with it have been descending into a slog more and more and my sessions are getting shorter and shorter.

I just went through
Deepnest
and 'killed' the
Dreamer
only to find myself in the same spot in terms of upgrades, or lack thereof, after exploring my least favorite area so far for what felt like eternity. Please, carry on my stead.

Alright, rant over but had to get that off my chest. Currently torn between coming back who-knows-when-but-later or possibly picking it up again maybe next week after giving it a short rest. Don't really know what I'm supposed to do right now at all and for fuck's sake, I even jot down notes in Notepad after each session.

You are a totally, absolutely, completely...

honorable knight. It was his last wish. He wanted to experience the perfection of his life's work. There is another (happier) ending for him if you spare him, but I really think he finds peace either way.

God damn it I can't do SHIT to
Nightmare King Grimm
. His attacks are all way too strong - 2 HP of damage - and they occur so quickly. Any build recommendations? Any tips? I am so stuck, and I just want to get done with this bit of content so I can begin optimising for the White Palace and trial of the fools.

I delivered the flower saftely...Did a bit of Colloseum of Fools for that last Pale Ore (before the whole
Nailsmith mercy killing
thing), but honestly now I feel I'm stuck unless that
Grub finder on the map
is telling me otherwise. For one, there's a section of an aera which theme seems to be comprised of
bees
that I can't seem to access. Second is the door in
The Abyss
which is locked off by a
Blue Orb
and a seemingly pointless room on the far bottom west side of the map. Third is in the topmost part of the
Crystal Caverns
, which seems to be a drop off point since I can't wall-climb it. This is separate from the other drop-off point on the east-most side atop the
Crown
.

Any hints regarding where to explore next? I know there's still chunks of the map cordoned off because of breakable walls...

For the bees, you want to take the tramway down on the bottom of the map as right as possible, and keep going right until you find a wall. Break this wall.

There's a breakable section of a wall near the two lowest bees in that string of rooms going upward with bees in them. It's over some spikes, and I found this completely by accident in my first playthrough by firing a spell at the bees.

You can unlock that door if you go up to it with a life bar containing 15 blue masks, blue masks from charms count

I don't actually think you can do anything with that?

Fire off some unupgraded spells while standing on the pillar and see what happens

Actual path to the true ending:

Obtain the full Kingsoul from clearing the Queen's Garden and the White Palace (Dream Nail the guard looking dude at the far right of the Ancient Basin, near the hidden stag station), then equip it and drop down to the bottom of the Abyss again

You can get to the mask without being able to go through the black mist. Can you swim in the acid waters? If not you should explore the Royal Waterways below City of Tears.

Regarding the black mist, once you are able to double jump, Kingdom's Edge is where you need to go (around mid-right of that area, you can only access it with double jump). After that, you should explore the lower part of Ancient Basin.

There's a in-game map that gives you that information. Discovering it was one of my favorite parts of the game so I don't know if you want me to tell you or just discover it by yourself.

You can get a map from the boss of the Tower of Love that shows where all the missing grubs are on the map.

No way I'm going to discover it since I've unlocked all the maps with no other opened paths and I'm not planning on checking each corner of each map to find one secret, so just tell thanks...

You have to find a key in the Queen's Gardens:

Bottom right where the Knight is, in the end of that corridor.

After getting it you have to go to Kingdom's Edge:

It's that blue entrance on the left.

I'm in the same train. I think I have played it for 30+ hours, got all major move upgrades (I think), but have no incentive to play further. It's just too long for its own sake and has no real sense of reward most of the time. But its biggest problem for me is how tedious it is to fast travel. 15 minutes of walking/fighting just to get to a merchant is just not fun, especially now that I don't have so much time to play. Add to this blocked paths in Forgotten Crossroads that appear later in game but not in the map... The balance between frustration and reward is just awful in this game. I finished the mummy and as hard as it can be it was way less frustrating to me (but also way worst level design wise).

I'm sad to say this as I really wanted to love it, as the art direction is fantastic...

Finally got all the achievements. Took like 30hrs across 2 playthroughs. Did the same back on PC during launch but that took 3x as long.

Thought I was done with the
Soul Master! My health was down to just one hit left when I thought he was finished, but lo and behold! The asshole was still attacking after we crashed through the glass, and nailed me. That sure was annoying.
20 hours in right now and haven't begun exploring Deepnest yet!

Got Golden Zote now (and finished White Defender, too).

Never became really comfortable with the Zote fight, though. Funnily enough the last fight where he deals 8 mask damage was easy because an easy Fury of the Fallen proc. It combines with Fragile Strength for a 162.5% dmg increase which makes the fight short-lived. Now it's time to put the game aside and wait for GaG and Hornet DLC.

I hope Team Cherry works on a new game afterward, though. I don't even really want a Hollow Knight 2 because the story is told already. Another Metroidvania with its own unique art direction, lore, and perhaps slightly different game mechanics would be very welcome, though.

lol same, just finished the last fight.

I kept the same charms I mentioned on the top of this page for all fights. Very good point about the fury of the fallen, should've traded longnail for it in the last one.

The last fights are basically the same after he starts dealing 5-6 masks of damage, you can only take 1 hit anyway (not that many openings for healing besides when he's stunned).

Tomorrow I'll do White Defender, should be fun.

I feel like the Gathering Swarm charm should be a build in mechanic in Hollow Knight.

Most enemies and Geo deposits don' drop that much geo already and when it then bounces all over the place, often even falling into spiker, water, and co., it becomes too much of a hassle. Like, for efficiency sake it's downright best to ignore that stuff after the early sections and instead just explore and find relics, which are worth substantially more without taking up time. It's just not fun to hit deposits 5 times and then spend another couple seconds picking up the little geo you missed.

The same could be said for the compass, I guess. I agree that it would be nice to have as default (or some sort of unlock), but I think it works fine like it is.

Last time I heard their thinking on it was that they were going to work on something new after they were done adding stuff to this game -- and if they return to HK after that it'll be years down the road. (Obviously their thinking on that could have changed by now, who knows)

Yeh, though in that case I can at least see how there are people who actually appreciate the lack of a constant position marker. With the geo mechanics I see downright no reason why one wouldn't have Gathering Swarm permanently on. However, one could just make it a toggable option and yeh, I'm not sure if it was smart to include either of the two into the charm system.

I actually just watched a video about cut content where a clip where they say all that was shown. Sounds like what I'd hope for then.

Any particular charms I should have for The White Palace?
Hiveblood let's you try almost indefinitely, provided you wait. Mind you, it works only on the last mask/health point you lose, so you need to wait after each attempt to stay at max health (or after a certain point at least).

I'd imagine it's the same one I watched, and it's a really good video. It's always very interesting reading about how ideas and concepts change over time during development.

While Hiveblood certainly is an option, I personally prefer the combo of Grubsong + Deep Focus + Quick focus as that will heal you up quickly and you never run out of soul for it either. Hiveblood is only useful when you don't die within 10s again, and there are parts where that happened a hell lot for me when I first ran through the place and used Hiveblood. Having to wait several seconds every respawn to avoid that became tiresome and the other combo I mentioend worked out very nicely in replays.

Yep. It's kinda ridiculous how much more content they intended to put into the game, though. Might be for the better they didn't hit some of those stretch goals.

While Hiveblood is a popular choice here, I agree that you don't really need it. It just adds more downtime because you have to wait. Grubsong + Deep Focus are enough and if you combine with Grubberfly's Elegy you get even more soul back per hit. I added that charm in my replay and your soul reserves just never run out.

I can do the Path of Pain after getting the other endings right?

Yeah, you can do it whenever. Just know that you have to break a wall to get there, but (for some reason) it won't appear "broken", as in, it won't show you the way in, you kinda just walk through the wall.

So, I finally got Hollow Knight, but I can't decide whether I want to play with analog stick or dpad. With a stick I find myself doing a lot of unwanted overhead attacks, but I am faster than with a dpad. What do you people use?

I'm actually a big fan of difficult games but there has to be just enough of a hook there for me to be reeled back in every time I get knocked down. I had said it in a prior post (or two) before but I agree wholeheartedly with the balance between frustration and reward, for some reason, doesn't work for me here. That 'just one more try' feeling just isn't there and I'm not entirely sure why.

All in all, I think the perfect way to describe it right now is that I think it's a thoroughly exhausting game that bit off more than it can chew. I still love many aspects of it and it's a really impressive achievement for the team so I'm definitely not just trying to bash on it. I'm simply disappointed by reaction to it right now because it also shines in so many other areas.
