If anything Alolan forms just seem like an obvious inclusion for GF in this game because they're all Gen 1 Pokemon and therefore . It doesn't necessarily seem to me to indicate that it comes from a willingness to include newer elements.

Still totally unsure about the item thing, but it's strange they haven't released more information about these types of things for the dedicated fans they're allegedly trying to bring in with this title.
I mean we've barely seen anything about the game so it's not that strange

It's not strange for the Go crowd I guess, but a simple confirmation of exactly which core mechanics like items we can expect to see stay would be something I expect rather immediately.

Then again I absolutely think they're talking out both sides of their mouth when they claim that this game will totally be appealing to dedicated fans so I guess I'm not actually that surprised.

They didn't introduce Megas in Go when they introduced Alolans.
I don't see Alolans being indicative of Megas at all.

So...did this game hyped you to start playing Go! again?

My level 19 from last year is now 22...got quite a lot of EXP too with all the new Pokemon arrivals! Also make for a nice way to do something related to video games with my GF as she's deep in this too and loves going out for walks. While I don't give a shit about taking walks, this is an awesome incentive.

Just got that Snorlax from an egg, and he's a godsend for me to take/stay in gyms!

Yeah, i got back to it and i'm level 27 from level 25, got a fuckton more of +2000 CP and as you say it's a good incentive for going out to take strolls.

There's one thing that, if in the game (and if Alolan Forms are in it, I don't see why these won't), all but guarantees hold items: Mega Evolution

Hehehe man if this happens, I'm tempted to use a core of Mega Venusaur + Alolan Muk, since I can see a lot of teams relying on Psychic-types to deal with Mega Venusaur! Well as long as Alolan Muk still gets Pursuit at least, depends on how they treat egg moves. Hoping they add them to their movepool.

Thinking about Flying-types... Yeah RBY eliminates a lot of the standard Flying-types, but let's see what interesting ones we got!

Mega Pidgeot: Mega Pidgeot sounds a lot better than usual here. It's got a good speed tier (outspeeding Alakzam), that lovely always hitting Hurricane, and hell, it could even use something like Hidden Power Grass to hit Rock-types hard. With so many Pokemon gone, Mega Pidgeot sounds like it stands out a lot more than usual!

Mega Charizard Y: I mean this can soooorta work, but Air Slash is actually weaker than Overheat. I guess it switches in better than Mega Pidgeot, but it's not really what I think of for a Flying-type STAB. Mega Charizard Y is for other things :P

Mega Pinsir: Now THAT's what Im talking about! Mega Pinsir has a great Flying-STAB thanks to Aerliate. It also can be a potent sweeper with Swords Dance and Quick Attack. Now I do worry about the 4x Stealth Rock weakness (same for Mega Charizard Y), but they're both strong enough that they can probably overcome it.

Dodrio: Normally this thing is severely outclassed by stronger Flying-types, but here, it's the strongest user of Brave Bird, so I'm much more interested in it than usual. It's decently fast too, outspeeding Mega Pinsir in particular (Quick Attack is gonna hurt though). Might be a decent choice when the Mega Evo slot is used up!

Scyther:
This thing's usefulness is gonna depend heavily on if Eviolite is in the game, and if it works on Scyther. I'm still skeptical that it'd be worth using over Mega Pinsir or other Flying-types though, but Eviolite would make it decently bulky.

Mega Aerodactyl: OK Aerial Ace is weak even with Tough Claws, so idk if I want to count this much lol.

Articuno: Articuno does have Hurricane which will deal plenty of damage to Mega Venusaur, but there's really only one thing Articuno is good at: spamming Sheer Cold :P

Zapdos: I mean Zapdos could use Hidden Power Flying or Drill Peck if you're desperate to hit Mega Venusaur. They probably won't see that coming, but it may be a bit hard to fit in. It'll depend on the avaliable moves I guess.

Moltres: Moltres has a much better Hurricane, might work if you've already used your Mega slot. However, I feel like it has a harder time justifying that 4x Stealth Rock weakness over the megas, sorta like Articuno.

Dragonite: Dragonite will be great if it has Multiscale, but if you want a Flying-STAB, it's gonna rely on Z-moves being in the game, because Fly sucks without the Z move honestly.

Well that's an interesting cast of characters to say the least, with only Mega Charizard Y, Zapdos, and Dragonite being the usual relevant ones in other metagames! I dunno why I went on this tanget tbh, but it was fun!

I will try a demo today, if it's different from E3 demo I will tell you

Is there any chance you can try and get to a Pokemon's stat screen? At the very least that could give us an idea on where abilities are going. Well unless its not there lol

"we noticed people liking evee because of evolution, so we blocked the possibility of evolving it"

To be fair, Pikachu has pretty massively buffed stats. I mean, it still needs Light Ball to be good in competitive play (So Pikachu of all Pokemon is praying to Arceus items are still in lol), but I imagine this at least means the starter Eevee is gonna have buffed stats as well!

FYI what some people may be refering to is this when it comes to items and abilities being gone:

1528838162625-png.121707

I wouldn't use this screen as evidence for that, since this screen only came up because Pikachu was learning Double Kick, but needed to forget a move. This isn't the normal stat screen though. Funnily enough, this did confirm one thing though: Natures are in, since the color for Attack and Defense cordinate with nature (It's a Lonely nature, so +Atk, -Defense)

Now to be fair, I'm not too confidant about items coming back since the option to put on an item did not show up in the demo when selecting a Pokemon. Abilities are still a big question mark at all. Still, Natures being in does raise some red flags for me, makes me wonder if we're just looking at some strange menu stuff.

Regardless though, I'll still try the game competitively. Lack of abilities and items would be a huge change, but it might be a nice contrast to the likely increasing complexity gen 8 will bring to the battle system.

Even without an ability screen. Surely people could have checked if Static ever triggered in the wild... I mean, trainer battles, right? Unless this pikachu is special and got something else for it's ability.

Another possible way was to check if the demo Bulbasaur/Charmander/Squirtle triggered Overgrow/Blaze/Torrent at low health.

Something to note is that Static is a very finicky ability. It only works 30% of the time when a contact move hits Pikachu. It could also have Lightning Rod for all we know, which is Pikachu's Hidden Ability. Also note that this is probably a new Pikachu forme too, so that could play into things.

Not saying the lack of abilities is impossible, just saying that there are multiple ways for our current information to tell us nothing atm.

Natures are still in the game, it'd be weird if they took out abilities and not natures.

We don't know. Stop believing bullshit you read online, that person has no idea. We haven't seen the Pokémon stats screen yet.

I'm a pretty open minded guy. I'm giving this game a chance cuz I love PK. But the game was showcased at E3 and people did play it right?

It would really be disheartening if there's no trainer customization or items or Abilities. That would really suck. Baby's 1st Pokemon really should be the title for the OT if the game is gonna be that stripped down. Then again... this is mostly for the GO crowd so I shouldn't even be that shocked.

It looks like you can get special gifts (gift?) for transferring but I don't think we know what it contains yet. Unless someone can correct me on that?

Also, it will help my Go experience by reducing the amount of Pokemon I have in storage :P

EDIT: Revisiting the trailer, it looks like a "Special Pokemon" can also be transferred to Go but, again, that's not been reveled.

Players didn't actually have access to much. Most of the information is coming from the Treehouse hands-on with the game where we do get a glimpse of the menus, but that really only tells us what we didn't see and how its different from previous entries. For all we know, everything is in there somewhere and they're just being obtuse about item management and manipulation, but that would be a regression for them.

Personally I'm kind of okay with Let's Go being what it is as a Go companion title moreso than anything, particularly since we know the "real" sequel is coming.

As long as the"real" sequel is a great title in single player and multiplayer that breaks free of the issues that the series has waded into, I agree.

If you can, test for presence of Static on Pikachu (use tail whip over and over until a caterpie tackling gets paralyzed) or test for Overgrow/Blaze/Torrent (grass/fire/water moves do 50% more damage when there is only 1/3 of there health left. Charmander and Squirtle get attacking moves at level 7, bulbasaur at level 9.)

Oh I forgot to mention this, but it doesn't really fit with the rest of my post: Back in gen 6, we did have a special online tournament called Kanto Classic, which only allowed Kanto Pokemon and no items. Abilities were still a big deal (and in fact, where a major reason behind Clefable and Dragonite's usage, and it massively benefited Gyarados too). That being said, It was pretty dramatically different than any other Pokemon metagame, INCLUDING RBY.

Throw Alolan formes and the new Pokemon in the mix, and we're gonna be looking at a pretty different competitive environment to past gens at least. I can understand why a lot of people would be sad though, since it does reduce complexity by quite a bit. Kanto Classic was at least a fun format, so I like it being back in a way.

With the online features being gutted and the strong likelihood of VGC skipping over Let's Go entirely, I have doubts that a meaningful meta is actually going to form.

I think it's way too early to be expecting no hold items or abilities based on that screen of Pika learning double kick. Nintendo demos are always limited in some way.

I think it is WAAAAY too soon to start suggesting there are no abilities. As people have said, we pretty much know there are natures as we've seen boosted / reduced stats just like the other games. Abilities aren't exactly complex so I don't see why they would remove them and not natures which are, arguably, less well explained in game.

You can get others Eevee that will be able to evolve. Same for Pikachu. (We've seen wild pikachus in Threehouse E3 demo).
It's just because Pikachu don't evolve in anime/yellow. You can still get you eevolutions.

I was just pointing the contradiction on not letting the "evolution pokemon" (from the pokedex) evolve. Its kinda dumb. I know its for version parity and its buffed and you can get other evees and blabla but its dumb.

I can't see Let's Go meta being a widespread format. as an option, yea, but one that gets plays just from curiosity

It's not impossible, I guess. Can't imagine it becoming anything more than a niche format, though.

To be clear, I don't expect Let's Go metagames to have the same playerbase as say, OU, Battle Spot Singles, Ubers, or VGC, but thankfully, one of the strengths of competitive Pokemon is that there's usually enough of a userbase for metagame development for even niche metagames. It helps too that Kanto Classic was a pretty popular tournament format last gen, so I can see people at least playing Let's Go Singles to relive that in a way.

Let's Go Doubles is a bigger question mark however (double battles were confirmed in Treehouse). Not sure how many people want to play that, but I did do some playtesting with a hypothetical metagame that assumed items and abilities. It was pretty unlike anything I played before, with strange Pokemon like Omastar being big threats!

Come to think of it, I wonder how they'll handle hidden abilities (if they're even implemented at all). Maybe Pokemon transferred from Go automatically have them?

I would hate to see abilities go, but I thought it would be much worse than that to be honest. I expected them to simplify the way stats worked, or even simplify the combat massively in general.

This is why I've been hoarding stuff with good hidden abilities on Pokemon Go lol. Even silly things like Goldeen, since me and a few people had success with a Specially Defensive Lightning Rod Seaking that spammed Horn Drill and would counter a lot of Zapdos, since most were running Hidden Power Ice for Dragonite over Hidden Power Grass! I've also refused to evolve any Clefairy I come across, since Friend Guard makes Clefairy better than Clefable in doubles!

If abiltiies get deconfirmed, well at least I'll have a lot more space in Go I guess lol.

The first trailer of this game was made to convince casual gamers. From now on the trailers will appeal more to the core Pokémon audience.

They're probably gonna show more gameplay footage that than another "lifestyle" trailer. Hope we see some later areas.
