Frontseat, because it's friendlier.

Only go on back seat if we're multiple people taking the ride.

Sorry. I just thought your posts were quite odd. As first you go from there's no reason for anyone to do this different than me to I must be the only one then. Jumping between extremes. But nothing serious I guess so let's leave it at that.

No worries, my posts weren't really thoughtful to begin with. One might even call them shitposts :/

Just killing time at work and this day will never end..

back seat 95% of the time.

Exceptions:
- When there's a group, 3 or more, I'll usually ask the drive "Do you mind if I sit in the front?" If the person minds, then we'll all squeeze in the back, otherwise I hate squeezing in the back as a tall person.
- When it's a 2 seater or for some reason their backseat is inaccessible.

I happily engage with the driver.

Backseat if it's a regular Uber X/Lyft. If it's a pool, I'll sit in the front if possible.

Here Uber, and the likes, operates in a grey area of the law, so they are often stoped by cops who take the car away if they are confirmed to be Uber. So it's kind of an unspoken rule to sit in the front to look related, or friends, or something less suspicious.

Backseat. I still think of Uber/Lyft as a cab companies with a more convienient (for the consumer) business model.

UK and having my mind blown. When I've caught a taxi or uber solo I've always sat in the front as I assumed it to be more polite. Every. Single. Time.

I'd much rather be sitting in the back so from the responses here I know what I'll be doing from now on .

As an American abroad, this thread is really reinforcing my opinion that Americans tend to be more cold and distant to strangers than most other world cultures.

Front, for me. Yes, that includes cabs. I'm not some high roller with a personal driver. I am not a super chatty person but I like to give the impression that the driver is my equal, rather than "alright, I'm paying you, now serve me" (which, again, seems to be a predominant mindset in many aspects of American society). I don't really start big conversations and obviously don't ask personal questions, but I just prefer that feeling of equal footing and general friendliness. More often than not it seems the gesture is appreciated.

I honestly didn't know backseat was the norm in America though. I'm not from a big city and can't remember the last time I ever took a cab in the states.

I guess I might be, because I have no idea where this sentiment comes from. I'd argue it's the opposite, if anything. Sitting in the back, to me, says "yeah, I'm paying you, now chauffeur me around, bitch."

Well you are paying them for that. Obviously I wouldn't sit in the back if I knew the person. If I don't have control of the radio why do I want to be in the front?

Ride-sharing services aren't exactly the same thing as a taxis. People are using their personal vehicles to drive people around, which is a pretty clean break in cultural custom compared to taxis (at least here in America). Since people sit in front when their friends or family pick them up in their own vehicles, I can see how people would feel inclined to do the same thing with Uber/Lyft, even if I personally would prefer to ride in the back.
uber is 100% nothing different to a taxi in the uk at least

Will probably never need to use a riding service. I have 3 personal vehicles that I can grab.

I also sell cars and can just slap a used dealer tag on and drive one of those if the need arise.
People don't use Ubers from lacking their own vehicle; they use it out of convenience. Like if a bunch of friends are heading out to drink, you don't need a designated driver. Or if you're going to a high volume area, you don't need to worry about parking or valet services.

Rarely use them but I almost always go back. Unless it's a hot day like today (94 degress) then I go front for that AC.

Typing this from the front seat of a lyft

I sit in the front seat here in Montreal because for years Uber was in a grey area and they'd ask you to sit in the front seat because of the police so I got used to it.

When I'm in another country I sit in the back seat. Same with Taxis.

I get dizzy sometimes when I'm not the one driving and sitting in the front seat helps a lot so yeah I wish I could always sit there.

Why would police care?

I sit in front and I like to make small talk. Otherwise, it feels awkward to me.

Back! Unless we're a group and someone has to go front.

Anecdote: Once ordered Uber Select at Singapore airport and I got a MAYBACH! Dude was headed home for the night and so just wanted the next fare possible so he volunteered his Lux for the Select pool.

Now THAT'S a backseat.

front seat for me always, agreed on all of this

i recently fell down a strange youtube hole of watching this dude's videos documenting his experiences driving for Uber. a lot of the responses in this thread are kinda bizarre. there is absolutely nothing weird about sitting up front. a lot of the time, even when it's just two passengers, one will choose to sit up front

never had an issue riding in the passenger seat, it's only weird if you make it weird

Usually in the front seat. Sitting in the back makes me feel like I'll come off as thinking I'm "better" than the driver or whatever. I'm not royalty, lol. I don't mind having a chat.

At least here in Sweden Ubers are literally taxis, only with personal vehicles. But you have to be licensed to do it, you can't just do it as a regular person to make some extra cash. The "ride-sharing" thing was stopped, they're taxis now.

I usually sit in the back, unless it's a small car or the driver invites me to sit up front.

But I always end up talking with the drivers even when I'm in the back. They're usually very friendly and they always have stories to tell. I'm normally a very shelled off person, so speaking with the drivers is a rare moment of socializing for me and I enjoy it.

Front seat almost every time if it's open, unless I'm traveling with just one other person. Usually spend the time chatting with the driver if they're open to it.

Here's a bunch of human scenarios:

1. you're drinking
2. Parking is difficult where you're going
3. You need to finish some emails on the way
4. You're arriving at, or going to an airport.

I mean I can think of dozens more but I'm genuinely curious to know why none of these would ever apply to you.

I took a Lyft ride from the airport a few weeks ago, it was just me (usually I am with a group when I use ride-sharing). It was past midnight (so dark out) and the Lyft driver was a woman with a rather large SUV, and I for a brief second thought of sitting in the front because it might feel sort of weird sitting in the back of a large car. However, I ultimately felt like it might be more awkward for the driver for me to sit in the front, so I ended up having a silent ride home with me sitting in the back. Awkward either way.

When alone, I find it less awkward to sit in the front and enage the driver. In my experience, drivers generally seem to appreciate being treated like human beings as opposed to ignorable extensions of the vehicle.

Front seat just to make sure I have a working seat bealt. I usually encounter fucked up seat belt at the back seat which I can't use.
