I recall specifically listening to NPCs in the Witcher 3, and they always had something interesting to say.
Just playing through Witcher 3 with my gf because she's not interested in AC:O and I can't recall how many times we heard a soldier humming Pram-pra-pra-pram-papa or some other nonsense. Barely ever saw such a mechanical feeling world like Witcher 3. Robots roaming the world within a self contained 3ft radius

I dont know why people say that they are amazed as to how alive the world feels. To me there are a lot of immersion breaking stuff going on. NPCs for example are repeating the same 10 damn lines all the time. Being a Greek fellow and roaming in Alexandria is just so hard for me to hear the same 10 lines over and over (with bad accent too).

Also you cant interact much with this world. you cant talk to anyone, apart from quest related NPCs, there are not enough things to do in cities, not enough attractions thrown in.

Dont get me wrong its a good game and there is a ton of work involved in making it, but I just dont agree with the comments about how alive the world feels to me at least.

Is there any limit to the amount of times you can upgrade a single weapon? I got some sweet ass dual scimitars with poison on them and I upgraded them once. I noticed then that I couldn't upgrade them again but now I see I can. I'm kind waiting until a way higher level though as it seems to bring it to your current level.

Haha! There is some of that, but enough variations coming from the non-soldier NPCs. The soldiers in Skellige have some neat comments though, lol.

That's actually great. Once you go through the desert it feels like a self imposed exile, almost biblical. The desert is a scary place.

They're not barren Btw, most of them have secrets.
Nice, I've yet to go deep into them because I thought there would be a chapter there. Seems appropriate that Bayek's gonna wander the desert before he takes down the (possibly) final target.

Only seen one mirage, I need more!

I dont want to be specific here, because I am not aiming to derail the thread in the usual manners. But I want to repeat that I do not find the game bad in that regard, just not that great. The fact that NPCs have so very few lines of dialogue which they end up repeating all the time is really distracting. The fact that there is very limited interaction with said NPCs is also a bit disappointing. As far as activities go, not much to do other than take up on quests, which by themselves feel a bit repetitive and with a specific motif. (granted I have only reached Alexandria 4 hours ago, I havent explored much and there is definitely a chance that the game offers more activities, and if it does please dont name them specifically)

For now, I would really appreciate if devs could either increase the amount of NPC lines available, or reduce the frequency of these lines being uttered by NPCs. This is a massive city and people only say the same 10 things over and over. (and just to be clear, W3 did the same as well.)

Bought this on PSN because I couldn't pass up on that sale and I'm impressed. The opening was pretty bad, but running around this world is bringing me a lot of joy. Haven't had a chance to dive in deep yet, but it looks like it's doing things that grew stale in other AC games and changing it up.

So is there an armor to be earned, similar to AC2, by completing some puzzles or finding loot? Or is it all purchased in shops or earned in quests, and then upgraded?

Is there a better Poison sword than The Fang? I've been switching between that and the Vox Populi I believe, the one with instant heavy charge, and am trying to decide which is better. I like poison cause one it kicks in it drains them fast but wondering if there's a dual knife set that's good too. I like to keep a medium weight axe and something quicker

I can't, for the life of me, understand how people believe this game is worse or on the same level as Unity and Syndicate.

I have just reached Level 26 and probably spend around 30 hours already. This game's atmosphere is mind-blowing and keeps making me come back.

You know you created an amazing game world when exploring takes over the need to level up or finish the story.

I played Origins directly after Unity.

Origins's Egypt shits on Unity's Paris from the top of Pharos Lighthouse.

Origins's sidequests shits on Unity's sidequests (sans the detective missions) from the the top of Giza Pyramid.

Look, of course things can always be better, but the fact is that Ubi is putting out open worlds with some of the most sophisticated NPCs in the business. Say whatever you want about these games, but titles like Watch Dogs 2 and Origins are head and shoulders above nearly every open world when it comes to variety of NPC interactions with the world, the player character, and each other.

General question: Black Flag or Syndicate which one do you prefer?

Oh Syndicate, for sure. Enjoyed the characters and activities way more, and the district clearing stuff gave off a sort of Saints Row vibe, which is sorta fitting, considering one of that series key players worked on the game design.

I'm probably one side quest/activity from hitting level 21 and after probably 10 hours of wandering around, I'm finally going to go to the Hippodrome.

It's an incredible expierience to explore the southern desert areas.. who said that the deserts have no secrets? Go play the game. EvenI if there wouldn't be interesting stuff to explore the desert areas have a unique athmosphere and are so stunning to look at.
This world continues to amaze me with its scope and details after 45 hours in.
The world feels so alive, with it's wildlife, culture, amount of quests, mysticism... only second to the Witcher 3, wich is my GOAT.

I find amusing when people complain that Deserts are barren in games when you know thats what deserts are. It happened in Dragon Age Inquisition with whole Hissing Wastes hub people moaned its empty apart from few tombs and camps

Honestly your posts speak more to just how limited npcs in general are in the industry considering that I genuinely can't think of a game with more lifelike npc interactions. The only comparable example I can think of is WD2, because that AI can be angered or amused depending on what you do to them. The repeating lines are an issue but the npcs are still impressive with the amount of things they react to. Like trying to help you when you're on fire by throwing sand on you. Or helping you out if you're swimming. Or hell a fun one, I have footage of an npc who saw me get attacked by a crocodile and said npc proceeded to ram his boat directly into the crocodile to help me. Plus it's not just you that they interact with but rather with each other.

Yes because everytime a game is mentioned the game is derailed by a considerable amount and frankly I -and I am sure others hate this-. This is an Origins thread and I dont want to be reason to start comparisons and endless debate over something trivial as this.

All those "champ" and "LOL" talk is not helping your case in terms of attitude. Regardless you have yet to provide a counter argument to the lack of actual interaction with NPCs or the fact that they utter the same 10 things all the time. Even a barely interactive game like Horizon does better in this since NPCs have a lot of lines written for them and you can actually speak to them and they can sometimes even commend you on things you have accomplished throughout the game.

And since you want an example of a game with -what I consider- impressive interaction with NPCs and is actually even tied to the gameplay (in some ways) Deus Ex is a good one. Elder Scroll/Fallout games is another (and I am not even very fond of these games). There are numerous examples out there.

The first AC since Black Flag I'm really having a blast with it!

My sympathies in that regard. I once said in a Fallout 4 thread that I wished more of the better quests of Fallout's instead of the radiant quests. That was my point and by adding I find it better solved in The Witcher 3 I unintentionally started a debate where several people did not argue about my first statement but rather they didn't like TW3. So, yeah, I know where your attitude comes from. EDIT: Then again one have to decide if that example is critical to support the claim. If so, such example should be mentioned.

Just as an example of the attention to detail, this is just one group of npcs in this huge open world doing their own thing:


Watch til the 45:40 mark for that instance. And there are tons of other examples with that much attention to detail like literally 3 act plays, people dancing, people partying. It's genuinely an impressive mix of animation work and npc AI since they eventually stop to sleep or eat.

Deus ex is open world? Also AC games has crowds that do their routines and react to game world , HZD a lot of npcs are just static , one place kinda thing. Fallout and Elder Scrolls games dont have crowds either , its named npcs with their own routines and stuff. Games like AC, W3, WD and GTA have crowds ( W3 is a lot more static than other games mentioned) Also what is the epitome of immersive interaction? What does that even entail? I am interested

I'd put GTAV up there as having much better NPC behavior and reactivity.

For the most part the AI in Origins is decent, but it often goes hilaribad when riding horses in groups or just general cart/chariot piloting. There's a side quest where you join up with a few other allies on horseback for a raid and I couldnt hear the quest-giver speak because the horses behind me kept slamming into each other. I tried last night to see where I would go if I jumped into the back of one of those hay carts - and the driver ran over two people before driving down a staircase at the port and then stopping dead at the water. And even now, following a quest giver on horseback means several civilians are going to get slammed by their horse. And in terms of reactivity, if I take the tiniest hop (think an extra large stair) everybody freaks out like I set off fireworks. Another side mission I ran last night had me set three controlled fires to help a farmer's crop, and once I did the local NPC workers walked right into them and I tried not to laugh too hard as I watched them all stop drop and roll and scream while the main NPC gave his exposition. Also watched a nice fight between a hippo and two crocs just outside one of the submerged roads when some guards rode by and ignored the whole thing. And in the arena, all you have to do is position yourself so that one of those spinny blade things is between you and the enemy and that enemy will walk straight into it, get cut up, back up, and then walk into it again, and again. And how hilarious is it to randomly see a squad of soldiers swimming across large bodies of water, just because? Yeah...

What Origins does well though is all the canned animations, like watching workers go about their routines, dancing, praying, embalming, chatting each other up, etc. Though most people seem to just walk in long circles. It works, but there is plenty of room for improvement.

I took a break from the game('s mind-numbing side quests for a week) and when I come back, my image is super washed-out. Also, the pop-in seems significantly worse.

Wtf.

Help me decide my next game, this or Horizon Zero Dawn?

For me personally, Horizon is my 2017 goty and I honestly say that after playing The Frozen Wilds which is also my 2017 dlc/expansion of the year, it just confirmed what I have thought and felt since March when I finished Horizon. It's just too damn great. The only major negative I have is that when aiming, the camera zooms in too close but at the same time, I have realized that this is the majority of games where developers want to shove the camera up the character's ass. Aside from that, any other complaints that I have are so minor that they aren't even worth mentioning.

ACO is an excellent game but lacks the responsive polished controls and combat that Horizon has. It's good but not at Horizon's level in that regard which is to be expected seeing as how Horizon is an exclusive and ACO is multi-platform. The combat in ACO is more varied and requires strategy unlike all previous AC games. The world is amazing. All the quests (main and side) seem to be at the very least above average to good to great like every open world game. I have only played 15 hours of it and my only concern would be how the story and characters play out which based on comments here seem like a letdown but I'll judge it myself when the time comes.

I'm also waiting for Ubisoft to release the individual HUD options patch. In Horizon, playing through the expansion, you can literally customize the HUD and the WORLD MAP icons to your liking. It's fucking great. Every open world game should be setup like this. Playing with the compass off and all the icons off on the world map in Horizon to me makes it way more immersive than it already is and kills Zelda in terms of exploration because you literally have to go explore everywhere since all the icons are turned off. I'm hoping Origins ends up the same with the HUD patch.

As of right now, I would choose Horizon but at the same time, ACO would be right behind it. In other words, if possible, buy and play both. Or buy one on disc, play and complete it and then trade it in towards the other game. Either way, you can't go wrong but I do favor Horizon as it is my 2017 goty after all.

ACO is easily better than Unity and Syndicate. ACO has the best open world, atmosphere and immersion since Black Flag in my opinion.

General question: Black Flag or Syndicate which one do you prefer?

BF is my second best AC game (Rogue is first) and Syndicate is third but will be fourth once I complete Origins. I enjoyed both BF and Syndicate but for different reasons. Syndicate is the more familiar grounded AC game with a good story and characters, solid missions and good side content. Best of all, it was all single player. Great game.

Black Flag though is better in regards to controls/free running (I hate the free running/controls in Unity/Syndicate) in my opinion. Story and characters are also good. It's the location, atmosphere and immersion that really pulls you in. Plus, I LOVED all the ship battles. So much fun!!!

If you want to be a pirate at times and are interested in the ship battles and whatnot, then Black Flag easily but if that stuff turns you off and you want a more grounded AC game, then Syndicate.

For me, in order of best and preference, it's Rogue > Black Flag > Syndicate > Unity > Liberation HD.

Once I complete Origins, it will be at the very least third best ahead of Syndicate but after Black Flag. However, it does have a chance at being my second best AC game. Don't think that it will match Rogue for me personally though.

You're right that pathfinding for npcs on mounts is pretty iffy. Which is so odd considering how well done the pathfinding for your horse is when you auto follow roads.

Or just rework the 'minimal' preset so that rather than just flat out killing most HUD elements it really just shows you what you need when you need it. I'd still like to see area names when discovering them, the nature of loot I pick up, and the like. I still think they could push a lot of necessary UI bits into the eagle vision - which in Origins seems to exist purely to highlight loot in the area. Have eagle vision put up a small beacon to the next objective and show enemy levels - or even just a marker showing if they're too tough for you to tackle, sans numbers. Have some kind of indicator when a bow shot would be a kill (maybe a gleam on the arrow head).

You can tell that Ubi devs do put in non-UI cues for several aspects of the game, but its never quite good enough to rely upon, and eagle vision is always underutilized.

And just for the record, I can criticize this game (including all the bewildering modern chatter in the dialogue) all day but in the end I'm loving my time with it, far more than I expected.

I do wish the dialogue sounded more like an episode of Spartacus (with maybe less Jupiter's cock ;p) rather than some teenagers hanging out at a mall: "Shit Bayek, its so damn good to see you" etc.
