Where the hell do you get the materials to craft a quiver? Looks like a log?

I've spent way too much time looking for this.

Installed on PC and played for about an hour. Game is unbelievably beautiful. I spent a good 20 minutes just walking and camera panning (something I never do).

This game makes it impossible to focus on objectives because of how impressive everything looks. You just have to stop and gaze.

Plus, people watching (NPCs have some impressive animations and interactions). Love hearing the native tongue being spoken as I wander past.

Is it the leather? You can usually send your bird up and have it look for the ibexes that you can kill for it.

I feel like the UI really doesn't do the game any favors, frankly. There's a lot of very small, hard-to-distinguish icons for me, and trying to keep track of the treasure vs. guard vs. objective is really tough.

Maybe I just need a bigger TV.

Giza is amazing, that feeling when you approach a pyramid and enter inside. Why can you quick select between tools?, is annoying to enter the menu when you want to change between poison and sleep darts.

Haven't made it to Giza yet but seeing it off in the distance gives me chills. I'm savoring the moment when I'll finally make it there.

I love how you can climb up the side of any mountain, no matter how high. I found a synchronization point last night that was just nuts.

Oh, and underwater in this game is absolutely fantastic. Second to none in this regard.

It's next to nothing, even less compared to Black Flag. And even then, it's breaks the immersion everytime. I really wish they would just get rid of all that Abstergo nonsense. Almost no one is playing the games for modern stuff, we want to experience the past.

Thanks! Good, at least, that it's next to nothing. But agree, for my sake they could get rid of that completely and it would be a better game experience for me. The intermezzos of modern life, Abstergo and animus are too meta and casts a large shadow over the historical gameplay. Which in turn creates a distant to the events, reminding me that I'm playing a game.

Sometimes there's a short ambient sound playing which sounds like there's a baby moaning in my room. Creepy as hell, and I can't really make out what it's supposed to be instead.

I haven't really tried to be this stealthy in an AC game since Brotherhood. In Origins, being stealthy, even if only to reduce the opposition or sabotage a camp before getting aggressive, feels encouraged and useful.

I had a birthday coupon so I picked up Assassins creed from Redbox and played for a few hours. Glad I didn't actually buy it. I like the surrounding game and loot stuff, but I now remember that I have absolutely no love for the movement and controls of assassins creed. I'm a big stickler for feel and movement in my games and it really turns me off when I doesn't feel good to me(kinda why I can't play Rainbow six siege)

Aside from the Division, I don't know if I actually like any of Ubis 3rd person games. I feel like I'm constantly fighting with the controls to move my character

That's nice to hear - as stealth is my favorit playstyle. Assassin's creed games have always felt a bit schizophrenic in this regard; on one hand establishing a story of assassinations and hidden blades, and on the other hand giving you very limited stealth tools and a bit too simplistic NPC ai. How are you experiencing the ai, btw? I think Ubisoft took a big step with Watch Dog 2 - has that had affect on AC too?

I'm considering buying this game for the setting alone, but from the (ver few) trailers I saw, it looks like it is kind of borrowing a lot from Breath of the Wild? What's the impression here from gamers who loved BOTW? Does it remind you (in a negative way) or is it a different thing altogether?
Quoting myself - really curious to know other's opinion on this.

Bayek hallucinates if you spend a bit long in the desert. I had a ghost appear behind me on my horse lol

Having seen a lot saying it's rather "janky" (it certainly looked that way from the video too), does it at least play better than the melee combat of TW3? I'm not super huge on most open-world games for various reasons, but if the gameplay and combat mechanics are fun enough, I can deal with them. I barely got through TW3, and that was soley off the merits of the story and characters alone. I don't expect anything remotely similar with this game, so it needs to actually be better to play.

As someone who loved the melee combat in TW3, I would say that ACO is equally as good but the main difference is that in TW3, you're only using a sword where as in ACO, the varied weapons affect the melee combat and changes how you approach a battle. For example, im using Dual Swords and they are FAST. I can spam square on PS4 and get an enemy's health down to half in one attack but using a heavy blunt weapon, no chance in hell and is a lot slower obviously. I'm enjoying the melee combat in ACO but I would have preferred a roll instead of a dodge move. In a battle with multiple enemies, the dodge move hurts me more than helps. ACO being better to play would probably depend on your weapon of choice since they're obviously different and affect how you approach battles differently.

I am getting better at the combat and I don't use "lock on" which I never use in games since I prefer to "free fight" whoever I want during a multiple enemy battle as opposed to being locked onto an enemy until I kill him. Playing on hard with aim assist off. Have died several times including a few based on dodging into an enemy that was off camera only to be one hit and killed.

I would say that if possible, rent or borrow the game and try out the different weapons you get in the opening region of Siwa and go from there.

Guys, i played AC, AC II, Brotherhood, Revelations, ACIII, and didnt finish and care about black flag... I really loved the franchise and the modern day story back in the days. So , what about jumping directly to origins in terms of story?. I really like the egypt set, but i dont want to play the other games.

Ah, good to be here :)

Haven't played a AC since Brotherhood - but Zelda made me somewhat interested in this again and I like the setting.
Is there an option in the game for some kind of Pro HUD? Tried to play it at Gamescom for 15 minutes, but got confused with the mission markers. It's not a good game to demo in a short amount of time at an expo, but it felt a bit cluttered nevertheless...

Heat stroke hallucinations in the desert are cool.

Had a camp of bandits take on Djinn-like appearances when I engaged with them and then they turned to normal after death.

If you don't have a quest selected, the only UI elements shown are the compass and minimap at the top.

It's very clean.

It's basically the origin story of the franchise, so you don't really need to know the previous narratives.

The scale of the environments is mind boggling. I climbed to what I think is the highest point, and I still can't see the whole map.

I experienced this in Shadow of War and it's seriously annoying considering I have a baby sleeping in the other room. I had to constantly remove my headphones to make sure it wasn't IRL lol. Haven't started Origins yet but I hope it's not like SoW again.

Okay, but jut to be sure - there is no 'No Hud' or 'Pro Mode'? From what I've seen on the Giantbomb QL, it was a bit much for me. Would love to discover the world a bit more on my own.

So photomode has some hidden options.

"So there's a few thing you can do that isn't in the tooltips.

While editing focus with L3 (cursor active)

  • D-pad left and right will decrease/increase vignette effect
  • D-pad up/down will decrease/increase brightness
  • Right stick up/down will alter the strength of the depth of field / blur (which can make for some really good photos)
  • Right stick right adds film grain, right stick left decreases amount of grain
There might be more stuff I haven't found yet as well, I've seen some daily photos (the highlighted ones) that appears to have some sort of comic-esque filter enabled.. maybe developer screenshots. Maybe something else.

Hope this is helpful for some of you out there."

There's four preset HUD options - "show all", "light", "minimal" and "none". I play on light as minimal eliminates the info I want on screen. The horrible lack of on/off options for all the individual HUD info is very disappointing especially since Black Flag (same team made Origins) had a good amount of on/off options for the HUD. Really hoping they patch in individual on/off options at some point.

I'm playing with headphones, too, btw. Maybe this "issue" isn't as pronounced when using speakers, or it's really just my ears. I'd go insane if I had a baby IRL, haha :)

The game picks up a lot after the starting area, that functions as a tutorial (just like the White Orchard in W3). So far, there isn't much to complain about, the game is fun and gameplay is very fluid and designed to not hold you back with long animations or long travel. Even some side quests are (to my surprise) interesting, nothing revolutionary but not annoying. The combat is also starting to make more sense and is, without a doubt, more fun then the old approach or the shadow of war/batman style combat. It's not perfect though and especially fighting several (4+) enemies and archers is a bit weird and clunky.

After 6h: This is a good, open world, action RPG... I'm very positively surprised.

I haven't left the first region yet and have only played a few hours, but so far I am really enjoying it. I got my copy along with Super Mario Odyssey, and at first it wasn't really grabbing my attention as well as Mario. Overall, the first 30 minutes to an hour kinda felt a little weird as I acclimated to the game. The performance on PS4 Pro seemed a little rough during the opening scenes, but since smoothed out. The controls and feel of the character also took a little getting used to. Now however, I feel like I am getting into it quite a lot.

I would really recommend staying in the Siwa area, and working through some of the missions there. It kinda feels like a tutorial area, and has eased me into the game really well. Regarding your question about the BOTW comparisons. Being able to climb most buildings and landscapes is probably the biggest similarity. It gives you a lot more freedom on how to clear out enemy encampments. The tools, weapons and armour also work in a similar way, as you can kinda mix up your approach and play style. I would also say the exploration is slightly similar, in that it gives you a massive world to explore, which has ridiculous scale. Though I haven't left Siwa yet, and I'm not so sure how free you are to just explore.
Awesome, thanks for the impressions!

The modern story is a big part of why I was drawn to the series back in the AC2 days. I actually haven't liked how they've handled it in the games starting with AC4 because it's all seemed like skippable filler with literal no-name protagonists. Getting to uncover emails and stuff that expanded on the lore was cool and all, but there was nothing actually moving the story forward or giving you a clear idea of what they were shooting for.

The modern day stuff in Origins is definitely not as intrusive as it was in, say, AC3, but it also seems like it's setting up an actual somewhat decent story for future games like AC1 and AC2 did. I only hope they resolve it in the games this time rather than in a comic series.

I love Black Flag, but that was my first AC game so I didn't have the fatigue many did. Unity was mediocre, Syndicate was good but kind of boring and I didn't care for London. So far, Origins is giving me that Black Flag sense of exploration and wonder. I've never actually been a huge fan of the AC lore beyond the historical stuff, probably because I never played those earlier games. But Bayek is very likeable early on, I want to see more of his personal story.

Thanks for your impressions! I think I'll wait as I've got both Wolfenstein 2 and Mario to get through. Hopefully it'll drop in price soon enough.

I usually like Assassin Creed games but I never bring myself to finish them. Depending on the price, I'll probably pick this one up during Black Friday weekend.
