Hello there LGBTEra, long time no see ;) It's nice to see familiar faces here (some with new usernames).
New forum, new LGBT thread, so time to write the first post :D

Your gender? Your sexual identity? (Preferred pronouns?)
Male

Your sexual orientation?
Gay (or at least somewhere closer to the 5/6 on the Kinsay scale)

Where Are You From?
Poland, Gdańsk

Where Do You Live?
Poland, Gdańsk

How Old Are you?
31

Favorite Type of Music?
Prog Rock, some light types of Metal

Profession or Career interest?
Programmer, currently working in e-commerce

Favorite video game(s)?
First and for all: Resident Evil (hence the username). Other than that various action games (DMC, Bayonetta etc.), action-adventure (currently replaying Tomb Raider 2 :D), point & click adventure games and RPGs (although I'm still a noob in this genre). Too many to name them all.

Currently in the middle of playing:
* Fallout New Vegas (100 hours in; I'm going to finish the game one day...)
* Tomb Raider 2
* Dragon's Dogma
* The Witcher (I stopped at the 2nd act; I have to go back to that game)
* Apollo Justice
* Puzzle Fighter

and probably some other games.

What are your hobbies (other than gaming)?
I read (or at least try to) a lot of books, mainly sci-fi, fantasy and criminals, but I'm not going to say no to a good book of any genre.
Other than that, there's programming, crossfit (more trainings than the whole culture around it).

I probably won't post much in this thread (like in all previous threads), because most of the talks here take place when it's a night where I live, so whenever I visit it there are pages of new posts to read. But it's still nice to see you people here. :)

Welcome, everyone. :)
Hey, I really like your avatar :)
Related aesthetic pic <3
Thanks, I really like the waterfall one.
The last 2 episodes have kinda brought my moral down. I have been really bummed about it. I know its a TV show but I was quite invested in the characters and they way they ended it felt quite cruel. I watched is 2 days ago and am still thinking about it. Maybe me being depressed has got to do something with it. I just wanted to gather all my thoughts and felt I could do here. Thanks.
I haven't watched Please Like Me beyond the first episode, in part because I thought it would become stressful. But hopefully this video of Josh Thomas on a game show with his grandmother could help cheer you up a bit. I love this video. https://youtu.be/eFdFm9rWsso?t=30

Hiya! This is my first post here. I am 29 years old and have been dealing with a bit of minor depression lately.

Awww, sorry you've been depressed lately :(. I've had tv shows do that to me before. Misfits season 3 had me upset for a good two or three weeks.

Where Do You Live? Oman

What is it like living in a country like Oman, as a person that like's the same sex?

Hey LGBTQera! Longtime GAF lurker here. Posted once or twice in the LGBTQ community in the last forum, but this is a fresh start!

  • Your gender? Your sexual identity? (Preferred pronouns?) He/him, cis-male
  • Your sexual orientation? Gay
  • Where Are You From? Miami, FL
  • Where Do You Live? NYC
  • How Old Are you? 23
  • Favorite Type of Music? It varies, but I've been stuck on post-rock, heavy metal, and ambient music for a few years now. Aside from that my Spotify library contains all kinds of music, except country.
  • Profession or Career interest?Prospective physician/researcher.
  • Favorite video game(s)? Probably Fallout 3, Zelda Twilight Princess, Zelda Wind Waker, God of War, League of Legends, Runescape, etc.
  • What are your hobbies (other than gaming)? I usually enjoy reading a book every morning on the train, but haven't in a little while. I also enjoy thinking and sleeping (if you allow me to consider that a hobby :P). I also enjoy exploring the various museums here in the city, and visiting restaurants I haven't been to before.

I find it hard to relate to "Straight Media". Kindly recommend me some queer media. Both Movies and TV. I am kinda over the "Open Relationships" imploding and "Sad Endings". So please recommend based on it.

I have watched the following and highly recommend them as well:

1. The Weekend
2. A Single Man
3. Four Moon
4. Free Fall
5. Eyes wide shut
6. Holding the man
7. Please like me
8. The way he looks
9. Sommersturm
10. Looking

I am currently watching The East Siders. Lo and behold it starts with a cheating boyfriend. I will probably finish it as it is only 10 minute episodes.

Welcome, everyone. :)

Thanks, I really like the waterfall one.

Thanks for the Video. I would watch it when I am home. The show was actually a lot of fun and I enjoyed it a lot. It was just the last 2 episodes that kinda made me sad.

Awww, sorry you've been depressed lately :(. I've had tv shows do that to me before. Misfits season 3 had me upset for a good two or three weeks.

Everyone is hidden. People here use apps like Grindr and Scruff. I have seen some cross dressers out and about and people usually leave them alone here. I also have seen a lot of Fems out and about with full sass and people rarely say anything. People in Oman are generally nice. I haven't dated much people here though as I am in a monogamous long distance relationship.

It's still a bit steep in terms of pricing (315 Euros is the cheapest offer I could find with a search earlier) so I am waiting for a sale. Any games on it that you can play with others online besides Splatoon 2?

Mario Kart 8 is a must-play! Other than that, I hear that Stardew Valley (an harvest Moon clone) is gonna have a multiplayer mode soon. And Smash Bros is bound to come out someday.

I am currently watching The East Siders. Lo and behold it starts with a cheating boyfriend. I will probably finish it as it is only 10 minute episodes.

Todd Haynes films are great, Carol and Far From Heaven in particular. Velvet Goldmine has queer themes but I am not that big of a fan of that film. I've only seen Poison once, his early radical queer film, but I didn't get all the references he was making. Would like to revisit that one at some point. Safe and Superstar aren't queer films but they are fantastic. Safe is one of my all time favourite films. Superstar you can only watch on youtube because he didn't get the rights to the Carpenters music.

Rainer Werner Fassbinder is also another great filmmaker who did queer films, although he has a very cynical disposition to life. Don't watch if you are expecting something lighthearted. Fox and his Friends and The Bitter Tears of Petra Van Kant are probably his best gay films. In a Year of 13 Moons is interesting but kind of obtuse. I never saw his last film Querelle. But if you are not interested in sad endings, then yeah, maybe keep away haha.

There is also Moonlight, which is great, but you are probably already aware of that one.

May I ask why you don't to see things with sad endings? I think tragedy is a great tool to explore themes and pathos.

If you're open to (description of the general tone of the films' endings, so could theoretically be considered a mild spoiler by some)
melancholic-not-super-tragic
endings, I'd recommend:
Loev (interesting characters and character dynamics, some moments that may be a bit heavy and emotionally confusing)
In The Greyscale (the premise is a bit eyeroll-inducing but once you get over that it's a great film)
Those People (I think this one goes in this category? I can't actually remember how Those People ended LOL).

Other than that:
4th Man Out (basically the gay-straight-alliance version of a buddy comedy - quite enjoyable)
Handsome Devil (a bit cheesy and stereotypical at times - especially towards the end - but still worth a watch)
Esteros (a bit slow at times, maybe even boring to some people, but not bad)
Naomi and Ely's No Kiss List (this is more of a friendship movie than a typical "gay film")
Speech & Debate (quirky, a bit wacky and absurd but quite funny)
Out in the Dark (it's been ages since I watched this but I remember it being quite good)

And for TV shows:
Sense8 (you should try not to think too much about whether certain aspects of the plot make sense and focus on what makes this show great: its diverse set of characters and locations)
Faking It (this one is centered around a lesbian "couple" of sorts. can be a bit cheesy and teenage-y at times but it's got lots of great LGBTQ characters in it and is quite fun to watch if you don't always take it seriously)
Transparent (I've only watched one season so far but that's only because I haven't gotten around to watching more, not because I didn't like the first season; centered around a MtF trans person coming out late in life)
Orphan Black (not sure if this is technically "LGBTQ media" but it's got some prominent gay characters in it and is the kind of series that I think appeals to your average LGBTQ audience)
London Spy (I personally thought that show kind of fell apart towards the end story-wise but it's a show with a gay protagonist that's not specifically about him being gay which is sth you don't find all that often and it does do a lot of things right, too)
Will & Grace (it shows that this one is a product of the late 90s and early 2000s as there's very little in the way male-male romantic or sexual interaction being shown on-screen but it is a hilarious show with gay main characters)

If you're also open to books, I can recommend some of Josh Lanyon's stuff (they're not literary masterpieces but they're enjoyable crime mystery novels centered around gay protagonists with some gay romance on the side):
The Adrien English Series
The All's Fair Series
The Curse of the Blue Scarab

btw, I'm updating that massive list of queer visual media of mine. Will be posting it soon-ish, if anyone knows of anything that either wasn't on it the last time or of less known films released since 2015 (i.e. not Carol, Moonlight, etc.) send me a PM.
Even the new movie coming out this year that's having Oscar buzz (Call Me By Your Name) has a sad ending apparently. Seriously need to break away from that trope.
Does it? The reviews & impressions (which are not that many to be clear) I've read/head have described it as being very comforting. But I haven't read the book or seen it.

If he did I hope he called himself "The hamburlgar" again lol

haha I think I remember that but I'm not sure... I miss his posts!

I don't see his user name registered here, but maybe I just don't know how to search here.

One of his last posts on the other forum was on the 24th asking for a PM for any alternative OT forums. Maybe I'll send him a msg to ask if he's here.

Oh that would be nice! But I can do it too, don't worry about it if it's too bothersome :)

The impressions that I've read from people who saw a screening of it said it was heartbreaking. But who knows, maybe people interpreted the ending differently? I just want a gay storyline to have a happy ending is all. No baggage or tradgey.

Did someone say queer visual media? (part 2)

Films

The Normal Heart (2014) | Trailer

The recent HBO adaptation of the play of the same name by Larry Kramer. Adapted by Kramer and Ryan Murphy it is about the AIDS epidemic of the 80's centring around activists in New York.

Laurance Anyways (2012) | The films of Xavier Dolan | Trailer

Being one of the most exciting contemporary directors Xavier Dolan has explored multiple facets of the queer identity without making his films solely about being queer. In my mind his greatest work so far has been Laurance Anyways and if you're just going to watch one film on this list, make it this one.
It doesn't hurt that Xavier Dolan also happens to be very pretty.

East Palace, West Palace (1996) | Trailer

A film about a gay writer that explores what it means to be gay in China where even if it is technically legal to be gay the police still persecute homosexuals.

Beautiful Thing (1996) | Trailer of misleadingly dubious quality

A really sweet and funny coming of age film set in the suburbs of London.

Bent (1997) | Trailer

Based on the play of the same name about the persecution of homosexuals by the Nazis and life in the concentration camps. Also worth noting that this is probably the only film in which you will see both Mick Jagger and Jamie Lannister.

Caravaggio (1986) | The films of Derek Jarman | Trailer

One of the pioneers of gay cinema, and the man who brought Tilda Swinton into the limelight, the work of Derek Jarman is a showcase of eccentricity and creativity. I single out Caravaggio not for being his best film but it is probably one of his more accessible works, Nigel Terry and Sean Bean stars in the biopic (of sorts) about the Baroque painter.

Scorpio Rising (1964) | The films of Kenneth Anger | Trailer (for a compilation of his work)

Kenneth Anger is an experimental film-maker who is one of the first (if not the first) American directors to bring gay culture to the cinema. Why do I single out Scorpio Rising? Because yet again this is probably one of the more accessible works, it's about an army of gay Nazi bikers... Yes, most of Anger's work can only be described by the phrase "it is one of the most insane things I've ever seen" .

Pink Narcissus (1971) | NSFW Trailer

I'm going to let the description from the BFI speak for itself:
Pink Narcissus is a breathtaking and outrageous erotic poem focussing on the daydreams of a beautiful boy prostitute who, from the seclusion of his ultra-kitsch apartment, conceives a series of interlinked narcissistic fantasies populated by matadors, dancing boys, slaves and leather-clad bikers. ... With its highly charged hallucinogenic quality, its atmosphere of lush decadence, and its explicit erotic power, Pink Narcissus is a landmark of gay cinema.

North Sea Texas (2011) | Trailer

The second coming of age film on this list, and this one is a stunner, combining some really amazing visuals with a delicate handling of the story.

Brotherhood (2009) | Trailer

David Dencik is one of the greatest working Swedish actors and he co-stars in this film about two Danish ex-servicemen who when they meet in a neo-nazi group start a relationship.

Weekend (2011) | Trailer

A beautiful, low-key film about a gay man's weekend-long encounter with an artist.

The Boys in the Band (1970) | Trailer

One of the early works of queer cinema, directed by William Friedkin and based on the play of the same name about. The film focuses on its characters and how they interact during a birthday party.

The Naked Civil Servant (1975) | Clip

Based on the autobiography of the same name and starring John Hurt, this television film is about Quentin Crisp, one of the most important gay icons in Britain.

Milk (2008) | Trailer

The dramatisation of the life of gay activist Harvey Milk. Pretty darn decent biopic.

Stranger by the Lake (2013) | Trailer

A film about love and murder around a cruising spot for men.

Prayers for Bobby (2009) | Trailer

Yes it is a Lifetime film but don't stop reading, this one is actually decent. A biopic about Mary Griffith, and the why and how she became a gay rights activist.

Yossi & Jagger (2002) | Trailer

An Israeli film about love between two soldiers stationed in an outpost on the Lebanese border. A not quite as good sequel also exists which you may want to check out if you loved this film.

Boys Don't Cry (1999) | Trailer

The film is a dramatisation of the life of Brandon Teena, a trans man who attempts to find himself and love in Nebraska. A bit bleak but very well made.

Manji (1964) | Trailer

Based on the Japanese novel Quicksand, a married woman having a husband, meets a young, beautiful model and falls in love.

Brokeback Mountain (2005) | Trailer

Probably the biggest mainstream hit of queer cinema (and deservedly so) tells the story of love between two cowboys in Wyoming.

A Single Man (2009) | Trailer

A gorgeous piece of cinema, based on the book of the same name about an English professor struggling to cope with ordinary life in 1960's Los Angeles after the sudden death of his boyfriend. Also Nicholas Hoult is ridiculously good looking.

Maurice (1987) | Trailer

From the legendary director of "Room with a View" James Ivory and based on the novel of the same title it is a tale of same-sex love in early 20th century England, featuring a young Hugh Grant and great cinematography. Recently received a 4K restoration.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994) | Trailer

A great, if fairly camp, road trip film which follows the journey of two drag queens and a transsexual woman across the Australian Outback.

Christopher and His Kind (2011) | Trailer

Adapted from writer Christopher Isherwood's autobiography of the same name this television film tells the story of Christopher's life in Berlin in the early 1930s.

Free Fall (2013) | Trailer

The film centres around a police officer with a pregnant girlfriend, who whilst he is away on a training course falls in love with a male colleague and the complications that arises from that.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001) | Trailer

Based on the stage musical of the same name, this musical comedy-drama film is about a fictional rock band fronted by an East German transgender singer and their tour across the U.S.

Blue Is the Warmest Colour (2013) | Trailer

A French romantic coming-of-age drama about discovering desire, and asserting oneself as a woman and as an adult. Featuring some magnificent performances from the leads.

Happy Together (1997) | Trailer

Directed by the great Hong Kong auteur Wong Kar Wai, the film is about a turbulent relationship between two men.

Mysterious Skin (2004) | The films of Gregg Araki | Trailer

I have no idea how Gregg Araki made this film, most of his work is funny, immaterial films that play with gender norms and sexuality. This however is a fantastic piece of drama with a great central performance by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Bad Education (2004) | The films of Pedro Almodóvar | Trailer

Queerness is a central theme in a lot of the films by the Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, the film I have singled out centres around two childhood friends and the sexual abuse that occurred during their religious schooling under the Franco regime.

Tomboy (2011) | Trailer

This is worth seeing just because of the stunning performance that Zoé Héran gives as a 10 year old transgender boy. Like seriously, the film is great and all but that performance is hauntingly good.

Pride (2014) | Trailer

Based on the actual events, this British feel-good takes place under the miners' strike and is about the unlikely alliance between a small mining village in Wales and a group of lesbian and gay activists.

Fucking Åmål (Show Me Love) (1998) | Painfully 90s Trailer

Okay, so I'm slighty embarrassed for not having included this one the first time around. A modern classic in its native Sweden this film follows two disparate teenage girls finding love in a small town

Lilting (2014) | Trailer

A film about a mother and her son's lover trying come to terms with grief, and understanding the man they both loved. Starring the infallible Ben Whishaw.

Ma Vie en Rose (1997) | Fairly crappy trailer

A film about the youngest boy in a family, and the family itself, coming to terms with his gender identity.

Pariah (2011) | Trailer

A Brooklyn teenager juggles conflicting identities and risks friendship, heartbreak, and family in a desperate search for sexual expression.

The Way He Looks (2014) | Trailer

A Brazillian coming of age drama about a blind high school student struggling with independence and everyday life.

Mädchen in Uniform (1931) | Clip

One of the earliest films explicitly dealing with LGBT themes, about a girl at an all girls school falling in love with a teacher.

Appropriate Behaviour (2015) | Trailer

Wikipedia's plot section covers it perfectly; Shirin is struggling to be an ideal Persian daughter, a politically correct bisexual, and a hip young Brooklynite but fails miserably in her attempt at all identities.

Carol (2015) | Trailer

I adore this film, okay, maybe even slightly more than adore. Voted best LGBT film by the BFI in March of 2016, Todd Haynes' poignant yet hopeful film about a two women falling in love in 1950s USA is an utterly incredible piece of cinema. Based on the book "The Price of Salt" by Patricia Highsmith.

Victim (1961) | Trailer

A thriller which not only helped shape the public opinion in the UK for the passing of the 1967 sexual offences act which decriminalised homosexuality, it's also supposedly the first English language film to use the word "homosexual". Dirk Bogarde stars as a barrister who ends up investigating a blackmail plot targeting gay men and also has to come to terms with his own sexuality.

120 BPM (2017) | Trailer

Winner of the Grand Prix at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, set in the 1990s against the backdrop of the AIDS epidemic it depicts the life, love and activism of activists from the Paris chapter of ACT UP.

The Handmaiden (2016) | Trailer

The second adaptation of Fingersmith on this list, Chan-wook Park's version amps up the psychosexual aspects and offers some stunning imagery to boot.

The Danish Girl (2015) | Trailer

Tom Hooper's take on the life of the Danish transgender pioneer Lili Elbe which earned Alicia Vikander an Oscar for her performance as the partner of Lili, Gerda Wegener.

Funeral Parade of Roses (1969) | NSFW Trailer

A delirious, kaleidoscopic masterpiece that follows Eddie and his felow transvetites in 1960s Tokyo.

Moonlight (2016) | Trailer

A three time Oscar winning (including Best Picture) chronicle of the childhood, adolescence and adulthood of a gay African-American growing up in Miami, Barry Jenkins created a stunner of a film.

Call Me by Your Name (2017) | Trailer

A romantic coming of age film set in 1980s Italy where a young man falls in love with the visiting assistant to his father. Directed by Luca Guadagnino from a screenplay by James Ivory.

Thanks for the compilation, berzeli ! Very useful.

I love queer films, have seen some of those and will check out some others. It's such a small segment still, we need more, and more exposure for them, there's practically nothing on netflix for example.

Hiya! This is my first post here. I am 29 years old and have been dealing with a bit of minor depression lately.

  • Your gender? Your sexual identity? Male
  • Your sexual orientation? Gay
  • Where Are You From? India
  • Where Do You Live? Oman
  • How Old Are you? 29
  • Favorite Type of Music? Pop
  • Profession or Career interest? Construction Planning
  • Favorite video game(s)? Tomb Raider
  • What are your hobbies (other than gaming)? Reading

I started watching the Australian TV Show "Please like me". For those that have not watched it here is a brief synopsis.
The show is about a guy name Josh in late 20's who falls in love with another guy Arnold who suffers from Anxiety attacks. Also the protagonists mother had attempted suicide in the pilot and Josh moves in with her. In the final season the couple break up over a threesome and Josh's mother commits suicide.Josh's friend tries to call Arnold to tell about suicide but Arnold is shown having sex with the threesome guy. The show is finished.

Thanks.

Holy shit. I lived in Kuwait in my teens (mid-late 2000s)... I think I know why you're depressed. :(
