It's actually the exact opposite. Jeff likes competitive/skill based games and doesn't care for narrative based games. The only thing that Jeff likes that I don't understand is the idol/clicker games.anything that requires any skill "doesn't click" or just gets a grunt
he hated overcooked 2 and hated the combos in god of war combat, but loves donut county and call of duty (nothing against those games, they just demand much less coordination and forethought from the player)It's actually the exact opposite. It's not skill, it more learning curve or "investment". He's fine with twitch actionanything that requires any skill "doesn't click" or just gets a grunt
Yeah, that's a better way to say it. It's hard for me to value his outright dismissal of games where the best reward comes from investment in learning the systems and mechanics. It's not skill, it more learning curve or "investment". He's fine with twitch action
WTF? Winning a Blackout match requires more skill, thought and coordination than playing GoW. Look at the other games Jeff has lived in the past. PUBG, Trackmania, Windjammers. Then we know he doesn't really care for Naughty Dog or Rockstar games. At lest this is how I see it.he hated overcooked 2 and hated the combos in god of war combat, but loves donut county and call of duty (nothing against those games, they just demand much less coordination and forethought from the player)
I'm not gonna argue against MHW's multiplayer being a lot rougher than it needs to be, but how much time did Brad actually spend with it?Dude wtf does Brad keep ranting about how hard it is to play multiplayer in MHW? "A chore"?
Jfc
Tetris wins their GOTY. Did not see that coming. It's an odd choice for sure, and one I suspect the staff will look back on with slight discomfort a year from now.
It's obviously a fine game, but it's ultimately just a subtle iteration on the same game that came out 30 years ago, while something like Dead Cells is a brilliant evolution of 2D games from the past. IMO it deserves the top spot and it is my GOTY.

You could be pretty reductive about most games. It's one of those things that makes sense as a staff pick, but Abby's assessment on the title is definitely not an incorrect one

Dead Cells is basically another rogue like Metroidvania.
God of War and Red Dead 2 are sequels.
Hitman 2 is another one of those.
Etc...
Well her point later on goes to "Tetris is Tetris. Of course it's good." which everyone was very quick to say that there have been some pretty bad Tetris games.Your point is overall correct but I don't think Abby's was made in that context; it was made after literal hours of debate and deliberation on titles like RDR or GOW, which leads into why the GOTY pick what it was

She didn't like the game which is fine, but what she said seemed more like a knee jerk reaction than actually giving thought to the comment.
Which is funny to say because Abby's GOTY stuff were mostly experiences rather than gameplay.

Nah, it's the best version of Tetris.
If you're bad at the game, which Abby seemed like she was in the Holiday video.

Her Top 3 are basically based on her interactions with the world rather than playing a game.https://www.giantbomb.com/articles/abby-russells-top-10-games-of-2018/1100-5823/
Not really?
Unless that is a genius dig at RDR2
No one was claiming that.
That's how I interpreted this post v
They should of given it to 76 as a favour to their Irish friend of the siteThey should have picked the quiet man or fallout 76 for goty. Let everyone know that giantbomb goty is all teeth. Let 'em know they mean fucking business.
That comment made me think she was the only one that mildly liked it or was to afraid to say she didn't like it. Everyone else really liked it.
Hitman.Honestly, as much as I love Tetris Effect, Abby is kinda right with that comment. Tetris Effect wasn't number 1 for any of the staff top 10s. I think that's a first in GB history.
2nd best
I think someone at Bethesda has dirt on Danny for how much apologizing he does for FO76.
He probably wants to do a documentary for the making of Starfield. Keep those bridges nice and sturdy.I think someone at Bethesda has dirt on Danny for how much apologizing he does for FO76.
Vinny didn't think much of it either. That comment made me think she was the only one that mildly liked it or was to afraid to say she didn't like it. Everyone else really liked it.
He's convinced himself he's an impartial documentarian and not a pr firm for hire. Love the guy as a game personality but it's pretty clear what's going on.I think someone at Bethesda has dirt on Danny for how much apologizing he does for FO76.
And as great as I think it is that Hitman won that year, I thought it was pretty obvious the room was more passionate about DOOM.Hitman.
I remember looking this up before, assuming it would be Shadow of Mordor, but no, nobody had Hitman as #1 in 2016.
I'm sure he'd like it to be that way but the issue is that you come across people that really dislike the game that others are passionate about. And as great as I think it is that Hitman won that year, I thought it was pretty obvious the room was more passionate about DOOM.
It's weird, I feel like I remember Jeff saying he'd rather see a GOTY a few people were really passionate about rather than just everyone thinking it's just good/great, and yet that's like the opposite of how it always turns out.
