Jeff has turned into such a grandpa.
anything that requires any skill "doesn't click" or just gets a grunt

It's actually the exact opposite. Jeff likes competitive/skill based games and doesn't care for narrative based games. The only thing that Jeff likes that I don't understand is the idol/clicker games.
he hated overcooked 2 and hated the combos in god of war combat, but loves donut county and call of duty (nothing against those games, they just demand much less coordination and forethought from the player)

WTF? Winning a Blackout match requires more skill, thought and coordination than playing GoW. Look at the other games Jeff has lived in the past. PUBG, Trackmania, Windjammers. Then we know he doesn't really care for Naughty Dog or Rockstar games. At lest this is how I see it.

Dude wtf does Brad keep ranting about how hard it is to play multiplayer in MHW? "A chore"?

Jfc
I'm not gonna argue against MHW's multiplayer being a lot rougher than it needs to be, but how much time did Brad actually spend with it?

I don't think he ever made it to high rank, so how much of a chore was it really?

Tetris wins their GOTY. Did not see that coming. It's an odd choice for sure, and one I suspect the staff will look back on with slight discomfort a year from now.

It's obviously a fine game, but it's ultimately just a subtle iteration on the same game that came out 30 years ago, while something like Dead Cells is a brilliant evolution of 2D games from the past. IMO it deserves the top spot and it is my GOTY.

No more discomfort than pubg, a true hot mess this year.

Firing up dead souls for the first time while in the middle of Hollow Knight killed the game for me. It just, had none of what really was gripping me in hollow knight. It's been hard to go back.

I think their memories of it are worse than it was because IIRC it was not explained well to them and some of them mistakenly tried messing around with SOS flares and such.

It's still a big hassle - everyone has to start the mission, get to the cutscene, 3/4 quit out and join the remaining player, and they have to wait for each part of that to load while the one still in the mission waits for them - but it's not the worst thing ever.

It's one of those things that makes sense as a staff pick, but Abby's assessment on the title is definitely not an incorrect one

this most disappointing category is amazing. it's an unstoppable dan meeting an immovable brad. the fact that he brought out shit like invisibile inc and dream daddy making lists and doom mp was hilarious.

You could be pretty reductive about most games.

Dead Cells is basically another rogue like Metroidvania.

God of War and Red Dead 2 are sequels.

Hitman 2 is another one of those.

Etc...

As an experience Tetris Effect does something none of the other games do for most of them.

I'm gonna say it, and I don't care that it's petty. But I'm just happy god of war is above red dead. The idea of having a game with genuinely bad moment to moment to gameplay and controls above something as well crafted as god of war would genuinely irk me. That said, it's why I'm kind of okay with Tetris winning. It's a bit of a weird cop out since Tetris Tetris is...but you can't really argue with the pure gameplay of it. I would have put Tetris, Dead cells, God of War, into the breach then Red dead

Your point is overall correct but I don't think Abby's was made in that context of making it reductive for the sake of it; it was made after literal hours of debate and deliberation on titles like RDR or GOW, which leads into why the GOTY pick what it was

Well her point later on goes to "Tetris is Tetris. Of course it's good." which everyone was very quick to say that there have been some pretty bad Tetris games.

She didn't like the game which is fine, but what she said seemed more like a knee jerk reaction than actually giving thought to the comment.

Didn't like Dan at all during the deliberations, felt it was just a battle of egos between him and Brad. It wasn't about the games at all in the end, just who gets out on top. Pretty unprofessional tbh and left a sour taste. I'm done with GB for a while.

Into the Breach and Obra Dinn are probably the most innovative of the top 10. Everything else is refinement of many iterations (not to say there weren't bold design decisions made). So Tetris at 1 doesn't bother me at all.

At this point open world fatigue is definitely annoying Jeff greatly (and I was off the train even earlier), and most other staff don't complete more than a couple of them per year (Alex appears to tolerate grind the most). Get used to games like Horizon Zero Dawn not getting as high as some would think in future years as well.

Tetris effect is an inspired pick. I dare say it is the greatest GOTY they have ever given on this website. Second place is Mario Maker, of course.

Tetris Effect was a toothless pick on their part, and it's weak overall for a pick for any site. But Tetris as a game is fantastic. Would sooner give that the time of day than another story driven game that is pretty and "immersive" and "pushing the industry forward" but has gameplay that is weak and shallow.

They should have picked the quiet man or fallout 76 for goty. Let everyone know that giantbomb goty is all teeth. Let 'em know they mean fucking business.

Honestly, as much as I love Tetris Effect, Abby is kinda right with that comment. Tetris Effect wasn't number 1 for any of the staff top 10s. I think that's a first in GB history.

Hitman.

I remember looking this up before, assuming it would be Shadow of Mordor, but no, nobody had Hitman as #1 in 2016.

And as great as I think it is that Hitman won that year, I thought it was pretty obvious the room was more passionate about DOOM.

It's weird, I feel like I remember Jeff saying he'd rather see a GOTY a few people were really passionate about rather than just everyone thinking it's just good/great, and yet that's like the opposite of how it always turns out.

I'm sure he'd like it to be that way but the issue is that you come across people that really dislike the game that others are passionate about.

I get the feeling most people would've been fine with Dead Cells or God of War at #1. And I was surprised that Dan didn't try to get it higher but most of his time was spent making sure Red Dead 2 didn't get higher.

It's funny because he hated Red Dead 2 more than he loved God of War. That's how much of a disappointment it was for him.
