I'll check this out later today - does it mention how much of the soundtrack is original compositions by Ben Frost? I'm super curious how much of his work is present, but my limited research isn't turning much up.

The heavy strings give me a Hannibal vibe honestly.

Apparently everything that is new/original...

4 episodes in, really enjoying it. Very tense and surprisingly well-shot, but unfortunately still often has the typical German acting style and writing (Germans will know what I mean). Basically agree with what Wolf said:

Very good frist step though for German Netflix productions and I hope more comes from this.

Watched 2 minutes and damn. The acting of some of the actors is really really rough, especially when they try to act emotional. I would even argue the acting of most of the teens is better than some of the adults.

so, pretty much binged through this, liked it a whole bunch and curious where the story goes. Does hinge a bit on various cliche tropes but I was pretty invested in the whole thing towards the end.

I just watched the first five episodes back to back. I didn't plan to watch that much in one go, but it hooked me hard. I would actually binge watch the whole thing if it weren't that late already. So yes, I think it's safe to say I quite like it so far.
Audio-visually it's awesome—great cinematography and great soundtrack. The story was a bit slow going at first, but really got into gear a couple of episodes in. I agree with some of you guys that maybe the acting is a little bit too "theatre and stage presence"-like at times, but overall I really don't think it's bad. Also, I'm glad that—apart from the 80s playing a big role—it's not at all a Stranger Things copycat. It's very, very different in plot and tone, I would say much darker and mature.

Most likely I'll binge watch the second half tomorrow. Now my only concern is that the conclusion to the story and its mystery will not hold up. But after glancing at
Isee's posting—without looking at the spoiler part—I'm cautiously optimistic.

I guess I'll write more once I watched it all—maybe I'll actually wait until 12/7 to go into more detail.

I thought the acting was fine to be honest. Maybe a bit heavy handed sometimes but that goes for most European stuff :p

Yes, I agree, it really isn't bad.

After reading a couple of posts here, I was afraid It'd be full on cringe time or something, but nah really, the acting is fine. My guess is those complainers are just being a little bit too over critical typical German (usually I get accused of being like that).

After watching the first episode, it feels like Broadchurch + Stranger Things.

Actually, could the non-Germans here tell me how they perceive the acting? Do you notice what we mean when we say it's a bit too "theatrical"/unnatural at parts? I wonder if this is something you'd only notice if you had a grasp for the language to some extent.

Halfway through the first episode. The English translation seems a bit off in places like they translated German phrases literally.

I think the name of this series will hold it back. Which sucks, kind of one note and not as catchy as Black Mirror or Stranger things.

Watching in German with English subs and I am really enjoying this, beautiful visually, looks awesome on oled at 4k.

Good story and not overly complicated to follow although, I am only on ep4 so I hope it keeps the quality up.

Watched all ten episodes this weekend, after only expecting to check out a couple's minutes of the first episode.

I haven't been this captivated by a tv show in forever.

Although, minor ending spoilers

In the US there are several forced subtitles because many Americans can't handle Euro formatted dates and 24 hour clocks.

Watched the first few episodes. I like it! Just be sure to switch to English subs, German language. Dubbing is for the birds.

Man, episode 3 was shot and edited so well. I'm not used to German shows looking this good, lol. It's really captivating so far. Can't wait to hear what Rocketbeans' Schröck thinks about it in the next Bada Binge episode.

Yeah I find it fine for the most part but the acting in that scene where
that guy is yelling "Du Arschloch!" in front of the nuclear plant's gates
in episode 2 felt weird to me.

They even convert distances to miles lol

From 'quake area to big OH.
Looks interesting. I want to check it out.

When I heard the Apparat song, I recognized it but couldn't remember it. A memory crunch said Breaking Bad, and sure enough it was.

I liked that it was german.
Hopefully there's a season 2 but it's the kind of show that is so underrated...

I have so many questions!

Binged it this weekend. Everything is on point and it established the world well. The ending is kind of underwhelming but sets things up for the next season.

Watched through episode 5. Pretty good show. Definitely recommended to fans of:

- Broadchurch
- Stranger Things
- Twin Peaks
- Fringe

Might have to give it another try in German with subs. I watched the trailer and assumed the show was in English. The dubbing turned me off completely about half way through the first episode.

To me overall the acting seemed fine, save for certain adults. Found that they didn't emote very well.

Just saw the first episode. So far, I am intrigued. Could be pretty cool, at least I like the setting so far. Even though the cast isn't as likeable, but after only 1 episode that doesn't have to tell much.

Acting hasn't bothered me yet, i'm on episode 8. Younger actors have been great. My girlfriend speaks german and she can't stand Ulrich's daughter.

Watched the first episode and it was mmm

Oppressive and tense and eerie. Characters seem more ambiguous than Stranger Things which is good and bad, in that I don't get the nostalgic-but-with-a-twist familiarity from Hollywood archetypes but something different. Probably German archetypes but it's less familiar to me.

Tried the dub. Audio not matching lips is distracting but the actors seem to match and it makes more sense to me to hear the conflict and tone through English.

Good stuff. Scene transitions were a bit silly with huge bass drops or strings swelling.

Hope they didn't just end of Sarah Connor Chronicles us there.

This show ends on a massive cliffhanger, lol.

I really liked it. Good cinematography, slow, long shots. Good soundtrack, which at some points feel overused. Though the kids/teens are fine, some of the adults, it's not bad acting per se, it just feels weird. Maybe it's a language thing and it will be fine for non Germans.

Show leaves many questions unanswered, so hopefully it will get renewed, but judging by the very few posts in this thread, the future might look..... dark.

Nobody should feel bad for watching this dubed. I gave the English dub a go, for a couple of minutes, after finishing the show in German. It's obviously not perfect, no translation is. But it is not right out terrible or unwatchable like some other stuff. Go for the dubed version, especially if you aren't used to subed movies. Darks visuals are a big part of the show and needed to establish the setting and atmosphere, imo. Missing them because you are busy with reading dialogue isn't great either.
I prefer to watch stuff in the language it was created too. But if I'm not able to and the dub is at least okay I don't bother with subtitles. I can't judge the voice performance anyway, without being able to understand it. That's of course just my personal opinion, but I'd recommend to give the dub a try before dismissing it from the start.

This show ends on a massive cliffhanger, lol.

I expected nothing else to be honest.

but I liked the cliffhanger. Bartosz being the priest and him and his grandmother fighting a war throughout time, maybe even part of two factions sounds interesting to me. It confirmed that time travel into the future is possible (suspected it after old janosh gave the strange looking lamp to his younger self). The world maybe going apocalyptic ar some point in the future (maybe because of time travel). Future girl seemed to know about time travel, so there could be a huge conflict going on.

Long story short. I'd really like to have a second season. But, just as you, I doubt we'll get one.

Im Dutch (and I can understand German pretty well) and to be honest, didnt have much issues with it besides that things were a bit too much sometimes, but it's pretty much the same in Dutch TV series so didnt really mind that. It's not bad or anything, it's more of a choice the producers/directors want to go with this. It kinda fits most of the characters anyway, just as with Twin Peaks for example. These arent regular people, they all have a story / mystery to tell. I think it actually ads a bit to the whole "something is wrong in this town" vibe.

Honestly. Who had the idea to call this "Dark"? So many better fits for this, and they chose a pretty generic one.

It's their first German Netflix Original. It would be a surprise for me if it didn't get renewed.

Feels more like an experiment and not an investment. But I'm also a pessimist and don't believe that a business would support an unsuccessful product. On the other side, I don't even have an idea what a successful product is from Netflix point of view. Views? Subscriptions? Likes?

Yeah, what a weirdly boring and generic title. Having watched the first half of it, I also don't see the connection to story and characters at all.

A title about…

Time, duality, or the number 33

…would have fit much better.

I understand where you are coming from, but finish the show ;)
I'm not saying there is a huge, eyes opening connection, but it's hard to discuss that topic without spoiling anything.

Amazing show. Truly fantastic stuff, IMO. Probably the best this year closely followed by NARCOS S3. Binged 8 episodes yesterday. It's better than Stranger Things Season 1 (I didn't like 2 at all). But I wouldn't compare it to Stranger Things. Dark is much more grimdark and suffocating. Really, really tense atmosphere. It reminded me of Donnie Darko with some Twin Peaks put into the mix.
