I think at this point I'm just ready for the mid-season finale to air, watch it, and then forgot about this show for a little while. I'd like to hope that it might improve when it returns next year, but I had that same hope before this season premiered and haven't really seen much improvements. The last couple of episodes have definitely felt 'meh' to me, and hardly anything has been done to make me excited for what comes next.

It's disappointing, considering how much this show was a 'must-watch' show for me in the earlier seasons, at least seasons 1-5. Now, I could hardly care. :/

The show is definitely dragging things out and a lot of the negativity is on point but most shows 8 years in will struggle with relevance and story arc.

I don't think the writers, creators or AMC really planned things out as far as story arc when the show began. I reckon its hit status took them by surprise and they are creating as they go.

Ideally this should have probably been season 5.

Season 1: Atlanta/Farm
Season 2: Prison/Governor
Season 3: Terminus/Canibals
Season 4: Alexandria/Wolves
Season 5: Saviors/War

This would have IMO kept the story tight and moving at a much better pace. Another issue has been casting, though the early original cast was great more recent fillings have been less than steller.

The guy that plays Negan has not lived up to the hype. His best scene was the night with Glen, since then he had been a joke. Same with the Saviors, they seemed menacing during the roadblock scenes of season 6 and the night Glenn died but since then they don't seem very intimdating.

Regardless, I still enjoy the show.

If a show is good then the over-arching plot being slow doesn't really matter to me personally. When I find myself complaining about "not enough happening" in a show I know that the real problem lies elsewhere.

I'm still here, guys! Happy to always read everyone's comments after each episode. I've never watched a Talking Dead episode lol am I missing anything?

The writing in this episode was worse than it usually was. That said, I'll see you next week!

Oh my god the Rick storyline with the garbage people is truly asinine... even considering S6-8's abysmal quality.

Easily the dumbest thing the show has ever done.

This back and forth between "they're with us" "they're against us" "they're with us again"... jesus.

Man, what a negative thread.

I'm just coming in here to say that I've absolutely loved this season so far. I feel like the pacing has been spot on and just what I wanted. No episode thus far seems like a complete waste.

Loving the season.

yay positivity.

I will say, the lighting and music when the walkers were pouring in was the only time they've felt like a threat.. since I can even remember. That was a pretty cool scene.

It still has more than triple the viewership of anything else on cable. After 7 seasons you can't really expect any show to be putting up the same numbers it did in its prime. I suspect AMC is still pretty extraordinarily happy with the show.
7 years is long, but Game Of Thrones has been on as long and has only increased over time. Same with Breaking Bad, it had exponential growth at the end after 5/6 seasons.

Good episode. I really like the scene when the walkers went inside the sanctuary. That scene was pretty good.

Easily the best zombie scene in.. well shit I don't know, two years? They actually felt menacing and threatening.

That was good shit. I wish somebody important would have died there to drive it home.

The Walking Dead is based on a series of comics, to which, broadly, it has been very faithful.

7 years is long, but Game Of Thrones has been on as long and has only increased over time. Same with Breaking Bad, it had exponential growth at the end after 5/6 seasons.

Apples to oranges. Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad have closed ended narratives - The Walking Dead doesn't. Ratings will sometimes (but not usually) increase as a narrative is ramping up and coming to a close, which is what we're seeing with Game of Thrones (and what happened with Breaking Bad).

The Walking Dead is meant to be a story of survival that spans years, potentially decades, with no real overarching "plot" to wrap up, so once that became apparent to people, enthusiasm naturally began to wane (like it does with every other show). We may see a ratings spike when the final season of TWD eventually comes around, but in the meantime the ratings will continue to drop until the show is left with nothing but its core audience.

Come on guys, it's Walking Dead, you watch the first episode of the season, the last episode before the break, the first episode after the break and the finale if you want episodes that really move the plot/characters forward. Occasionally there's a good episode in between and you just need to keep your ear to the ground on the internet for those must-watch episodes.

I'm so frustrated with this damn show. The writers only seem to move the plot forward by having the good guys on the main cast do something stupid. The Daryl/Tara stuff is monumentally bad. Daryl especially should know better by now.

And the trash hippies might be the worst characters in fiction over the past few years. It's been said before but it simply makes no sense that a small society would purposefully dumb themselves down the way they have in just a couple years since the outbreak. There is "suspension of disbelief" in terms of this being a show about zombies and then there is "suspension of disbelief" in regard to poor writing.

That being said, the reaction from people after next week's episode ends is going to be something truly special.

Every second the trash people appear on screen, I feel closer to death.

Part of me is excited to see how far the shark jumps this time. Hell, the shark had already jumped and has been beached for a long time, probably dying as much as I am.

This show has really gone to shit - literally.

It's frustrating in all the wrong ways and the writing has deteriorated to embarrassing. These used to be characters I had some investment in and now if I'm honest I just want them all to be eaten - because at the end of the day they deserve to be.

Just a progression of wtf moments delivered at the pace of a snail......

It's was okay but the phasing is off.

Heavy front loaded action early season then starts to crawl

I've been frustrated by this show all season, but last night was just the bottom of the barrel. Nothing happened, as usual, but then the Saviors' solution was to shoot all the zombies? What? They waited until they nearly ran out water to just shoot them all? And of course the Trash People story is completely stupid, but we already knew that.

I think I'm just hate watching it at this point.

I hope we get to hear Cyborg say "and yet I smile" at least a dozen more times in the mid season finale.

What's baffling to me is why people are even standing around such that walkers can overtake them. I think I saw a person with a long rifle just standing there who was grabbed by a zombie. Even if the rifle was out of ammo he still could have used it has a bat or something.

I also have noticed that this season has kind of dragged and hasn't accomplished much. Rick's storyline with the garbage folks especially seemed meaningless.

I hope that after next episode we get the time jump and the Whisperer arc starts

Dont think the Whisperers will happen till next season. We still have the Alexandria bombing which should happen next episode I assume. But we also still have the final battle at The Hilltop when all the communities relocate there.

has anything even happened this season? I feel like it's just been blah. Negan needs to die and be done with, and the show needs to move on to something else.

it also really pisses me off that one of the best characters, Morgan, is being lost to the black hole of Fear, which I'll never watch again.

I really hope the series ends with the reveal that everything that's happened post the initial Morgan meet-up is just the grief-driven hallucinations of Morgan's broken mind.

Not every show can be Game of Thrones though. As it's been pointed out, interest in those shows ramped up when the overall arc was nearing its obvious conclusions. TWD could be a better show to be sure, but at the same time I'm not really certain what another showrunner or writing team could do to stem the loss of viewership. By its nature the program is going to be mostly meandering and centered around a revolving series of conflicts......at some point people will just lose interest in those cyclical stories.

After this season, The Walking Dead has finally surpassed Dexter as the #1 show I once liked but then turned to absolute shit. I can't even hate watch anymore.

This is dreadful.

I am most likely done after this season. Maybe even mid season. There are just way too many shows on right now and I'm struggling for time so I have been looking for ones to ditch. This will be one of them. It's hard to watch but it's still hard to drop after sticking with it this long.

Maybe when the show ends I'll check out a playlist of episodes that cut out useless filler episodes to provide a more concise narrative.

Until then I'll just be sticking to the comics. I didn't even read the comics until after watching the show lol.

Agreed. If the show seemed to be moving towards some sort of conclusion I think it would be more well liked. Right now it's just random plotlines and definitely no end in sight.

That's the way it's been for a while. Action packed opener/important character death > Meander around for several episodes (maybe get a good one here or there) > Mid season finale death > action packed opener > meander around for several episodes > Big closing action scene/important character death. Rinse and repeat.

The shows just going through the motions of Ricks groups encountering antagonistic groups in the forests of "D.C"

While I haven't read the spoilers, we are apparently in for some kind of big shakeup in the next episode, and that will mark a notable divergence from the comics. I'm thinking they may be signalling the slow wind-down of TWD proper by going completely off the rails.

mt guess on what happens in the finale is that the saviors all went to alexandria to take it over - since their sanctuary was destroyed.

some major character will get the bat or something like that. something predictable i feel.

Ha, seriously, it seemed like his plan was 'shoot the zombies''. Also, what is up with Gabriel, how did he get so sick have they ever said?
Eugene is an idiot and this season's plot line is weak.
Walker guts. Which is not canon at all but would actually make sense...just not after both shows and the comics have them doing it time and time again with no issue. What a clusterfuck. Up there with retconned scratches and the cure episode. Lord lol

I've really gotten TWD series fatigue - I'm now three episodes behind and read the AV Club reviews and the comments here and really don't think I'm missing much so I'm getting back 30-40 minutes of my time back a week until they decide to unload a meaningful episode.

Sorry but a single sniper, let alone 3 of them can pin down an hundreds of troops. Yet Negan's rag tag starved group is able to dispatch all of them.

So I'm guessing that the flashes we got earlier in the season was the aftermath of the bombing
