I'm in chapter 2, doing the first side quest of the game. So far, so good. Pretty much Cold Steel meets Ys/Zwei with Persona as a coat of paint. My only complaint thus far is that the dungeon visual design seems to be pretty dull and repetitive. This is a general complaint on the Trails games as well (although they have their bright spots), but Falcom should start using more distinct visuals for the layouts of the dungeons, as well as using more assets. They're too clean and blocky.

So, how is the translation? I won't expect it to be as good as XSEED but if they're not at least doing a dub, they have to bring at least something of worth to the table. I got my copy in the mail today, gonna wait until I get as much out of Xenoblade 2 as I can.

It's not stiff so far, it has plenty of flavor, although some choices in my opinion are somewhat questionable in how they chose to do it, and sometimes (one or two times really) the translation might be a tad too literal. Basically in terms of writing, seems pretty solid.

However, the complaint of lack of QA for the Vita version seem to apply here as well (I have no idea if it's still better than what the Vita version was though). I talked to an NPC named "Going Home Club", for example, and the three stats your character has are displayed with different names in the status page and the ingame messages -courage, wisdom, virtue is used in the messages. Kind, Brave and Bright for the Status page-
There's also one instance where Towa is refered as Miss Towa and going by the dialogue before and after, it clearly should have been Ms. Kokonoe, for consistency.
The difficulty settings seem to have some inconsistencies as well. I chose elite difficulty, but a message poped up saying that by choosing nightmare difficulty I couldn't lower the difficulty on retries, so I don't know if I'm playing a difficulty named Nightmare or Elite (should be nightmare going by Falcom's past games).

It's still early, and the dialogue itself seem pretty good (certainly miles better than the Ys VIII localization), but some of the consistency errors are baffling, and make me worried that the QA is not up to par.

Thanks for the heads up!

Did you already download the patch on PS4? Most of those should be already fixed.

Also, for the courage, wisdom, virtue thing, that's correct. The status page is showing "Kind, Brave, and Bright" due to
the current level of courage, wisdom, and virtue. Those will change as you increase the level of those ;)

Ohhhh, that makes so much sense. Well, now I look just dumb. Still, I think the names should be in the actual status page, even if no one will actually be confused. Unless I missed something and the titles are already displayed there.

Still haven't downloaded any patch for the Ps4 version. Wasn't there to download when I was playing.

No worries :) I know that for me, I hadn't updated the firmware on my PS4 yet, so the patch didn't download until after I did, but you may want to check your download queue on your PS4 to see if it's there :)

Are there missable trophies besides the difficulty based ones?

I started playing it but there's tons of text which isn't a bad thing but it's a slow start for sure and I didn't even get to any combat yet. I'm talking to everyone as it's adding them in your friends list and that's a trophy too? Seems like it's very missable.

Also this game uses so many assets from the Cold Steel games it's not even funny. The characters could easily be in Cold Steel games and wouldn't look out of place. As could the environments. The main character even looks like the main one from Cold Steel. The overall look is identical of everything is virtually identical even the menus and fonts and sound effects. Even the controls. Heck even the animations of characters are just copy and paste.

Hope the soundtrack is good?

From what I played so far it looks like a spin-off of Cold Steel.

Almost all those things are fixed on the PC version, but i assume Aksys also released a patch for the PS4 version. And the Courage, Wisdom and Virtue is correct, what you see on the stats page is your actual rank.

EDIT: Didn't see Akselzys message, my bad.

I've made a Playstation buttons prompt mod, if you prefer the look of Playstation buttons and/or hates Microsoft.

Download it here, and please read the README.txt file before installing.

Feedback are welcome! :-)

The DLC packs on Steam mirror those individual ones from PS4 PSN, just bundled together for a reduced price.

Any VITA specific (Complete DLC Collection) as well as any free DLC are all already available in the Steam ver from the get go :)

So not only is the PS4 version more expensive at the moment, but if we want it, we're forced to buy each DLC separately and doing so is also more expensive than buying all the PC Version's DLC?

I'm sorry, but... what the hell is that? Not cool Aksys.

I suspect it's how Falcom wants it on console, but they have wiggle room on PC. Would've been nice to get package deals on console too though.

Managed to finish chapter 1 so far, and I'm enjoying it much more than i thought I would given how people described the gameplay as "budget Ys" or the like. Personally, I think it plays much better than something like Ys 7. So far, it seems like another great Flacom game.

My biggest issue so far is that, playing on Calamity, the game seems pretty unbalanced. On one hand, most bosses so far seem to be tuned so that none of their attacks (except for the really telegraphed ones) are one hit kills, which I appreciate, but the same doesn't apply to some non-boss special monsters I faced. The checkpoint system also feels pretty inconsistent. Sometimes you can retry before a major encounter, and sometimes you can't. As far as overall difficulty goes, any dungeon where you have two or more people in your party isn't a big issue, since you can just keep resurrecting party members when they die. But dungeons where you go in solo can feel cheap, with one bad hit sending you all the way to the beginning/last save point.

I'm also not a fan of the item timer mechanic, where you need to wait a certain amount of time to use another item after using one. It does nothing to balance recovery items, since you can just run away for the 15 or so seconds, and it rewards boring and passive play. It's still better than something like Nier Automata I guess, where you could just instantly heal any damage you take.

Any impressions about performance/features/bugs on PC?
I tried it on a rather dated PC with a 2500k and a 1050Ti and it runs fine at 1080p, with no real issues early on. So I'd say the performance is good, especially with how many other similar games (the recent Atelier games, for example) had serious issues running on such hardware.

So, how is the translation? I won't expect it to be as good as XSEED but if they're not at least doing a dub, they have to bring at least something of worth to the table. I got my copy in the mail today, gonna wait until I get as much out of Xenoblade 2 as I can.

I finished the first chapter, and it seems okay so far. Better than Persona 5 or Ys 8, and not too stiff or overly literal. I'm not really a fan of the voice acting though, which just made me realize how much XSEED's dub brought to Cold Steel. The one issue I have with the translation is that it really likes to put words into quotes, so expect to see plenty of things such as [It was "him"] or the like. Not really a big issue, but still.

That's what I got in the mail today too :)
Now I just need to make some time to dive in for a couple of hours in between other things.

Yeah, XSEED does a great job on the dubs.
I almost didn't buy this due to no dub (still haven't bought that last BlazBlue or some of their other recent games either due to that), but it's Falcom with a Persona look (the specific comparisons above already covered by others) so I caved for this one.

So how do you change the values for the Affinity Shards? I'm new to Cheat Engine, but from what I gather I'm supposed to open the CT table, set the 'Affinity shards' as active, then set the value to whatever number I want (I also selected the game as the process)?

Doing that method didn't seem to do anything to the number of shards I have.

There seems to be two Affinity shards entries in the CT file, so I'm unclear on which one I'm supposed to use. Do I have to set both?

Go into the game
-> open the Cheat Engine table
-> select the game process
-> set the Affinity Shard value to what you want
-> set it as active.

If you tab back into the game, you should immediately see the new values and can actually close CheatEngine at this point.
I always used the first one, though they should both do the same thing. You shouldn't have to use both.

The value doesn't seem to change for me. The affinity values seem to be initially set to 0, even though I have 2 in the game.

Damn fine job on the OP. This title went from an unknown to a definite buy in the near future.

Thanks for all of the impressions.

Akselziys could it be possible to create some stickies for bug reports and the likes on the steam forums? It works a lot with the games that XSEED releases and i saw some request for it but they cannot post on here due to the archaic account creation.

I think i can safely say that i saw pretty much everything the game had to offer:

apqjMFF.png

At first the game didn't really click with me, because i saw the gameplay a little simple, but after some hours i was loving the combat, and i really liked the story on the last chapters. My second run was on Calamity difficulty + Infinity Mode, and man, that was pure hell, with enemies one shoting you, so you have to master dodges.

The soundtrack is awesome, like always with Falcom. This was probably my favorite track (especially at 1:20, i love that part):

So what's the ratio of gameplay to visual novel stuff in this?

I could never get into the Persona games for example because you spent far too much time doing the dreadfully dull school stuff.

Can anyone confirm if the game has pro support?

Also, this game has the same trophies from the vita versión? or they included more according to the extra content

Great, I can't use the trophy guide for the vita versión then

The new ones are for skills usage, completing new content and difficulty modes, so nothing that would make the guide unusable. The exception to this is getting all furniture, but that will come naturally while you go for the rest of the achievements, because they are all in shops or talking to NPC's. The updated achievements are just that now there are more things like chests and dungeons to get S rank. So, basically, you can still use the VITA version trophy guide.

Made my way past the intro and into the first "dungeon." Super cool game, tutorial screens are coming in hot and heavy! There seems to be a lot of depth and a lot going on, more than I ever thought there would be. Will be fun for sure, this is my kind of game.

Playing on PS4 Pro. Don't know how to tell if it has pro support or not, but things look really really crisp! This pic doesn't do it justice but it is so clean looking!

So what's the ratio of gameplay to visual novel stuff in this?

I could never get into the Persona games for example because you spent far too much time doing the dreadfully dull school stuff.

Would also love to know this.

If the issue with Persona was that you spent too much time in the mundane setting of high school and the sorrounding districts instead of focusing on the dungeon crawling more, then it will be the same here.

If the issue was how Persona handled the high school parts (managing time, having to do activities to raise your stats, having to choose between doing S-links or some other activity... which is my problem with Persona 5), then Tokyo Xanadu might work for you. It copies the structure wholesale from the first Cold Steel (minus the field trips), meaning it's entirely structured around questing rather than the more "sim" structure from Persona.

But so far, combat and dungeon crawling are a significantly smaller part than the more dialogue and quest filled school parts, although I presume if you ignore talking to every NPC after every event then the ratio becomes significantly closer, as the exclusive side chapters of the PC and PS4 version seem to be just story (cutscenes) plus dungeon.

Edit: Shit, forgot to add that I'm just 3 chapters in, so take that into account.

For the folks that have both Ys VIII PS4 and Xanada Ex+, which one do you prefer? I bought and then returned Ys VIII (waiting for retranslation) but now debating which one I would rather get first.

I do like the story based setting idea in Xanadu but I am also a fan of Ys combat and setting/Adol.

I'd love to hear some impressions from Trails fans, particularly those that talk to every goddamned NPC after every event, like me! Does the worldbuilding and story compare favorably?

NPCs are great as always, they certainly don't have to hide behind those from Trails.
I liked the story a lot (I'm a sucker for contemporary fantasy, and this hit all the right notes), but it doesn't quite reach the heights of Trails.
That comparison is a little unfair though, given how many Trails games there are :p

Is this really not available for purchase at Best Buy in the US?
I got my copy from Best Buy. Maybe they already sold out of their launch allotment?

It obviously doesn't have the scope of a Trails game, being a new series and all, but they do a great job setting up all the new lore/organizations and whatnot. I think the game is really solid on that front, and every cast member is really likeable too.

And the NPCs are really fantastic as you'd expect from Falcom. Tons and tons and tons of them all with their own stories. I'm near the end of the game on PC, and I have about 98 NiAR entries, each with 2-5 blurbs for each character, not to mention they all have dialogue that isn't even for that stuff too.

You really feel like you get to know Morimiya throughout the game.

I am not sure if I want to delve into Ys VIII, since I prefer the older games that arent party based and lack side quests. Stopped playing Celceta due to this.

Persona on the other hand was way too filled with character interactions and Persona fusions, while turn based combat dungeons and bosses could drag on forever.

Xanadu feels simpler and more straightforward so far. The fact that the main protagonist talks and has a background story does really set this game apart from Persona. Feels more natural.

I think I prefer this game. Hope it has widescreen support too

Combat is pretty fun and very Zwei II like. Seeing Towa just transplanted into the game was a little odd but I guess she's a big fan favorite. Kinda wish the game had Turbo mode built in. I'll probably use the cheat engine version since using L1 on 360 controller skips text.

2 hours in the story seems interesting, the characters are standard japanese high school fare right now but I'm sure that will begin to change.
