Hooray for new (old) 2D RPGs! Been craving something like this on Switch since trying the Project Octopath demo. Never played a SaGa game before; curious to see what the experience is like.

How long can I expect a typical first-time playthrough to take?

i'm so ready for kawazu's wild ride, please release at midnight

Going to nab it on Switch. Hopefully the ports are good! I remember hearing that the original Vita one had some issues.

Oh yeah! Out tomorrow, definitely supporting this gem. Very much in the mood for a sprite based game. This is the kind of Square game I can go for, definitely.

So what's the best way to play Romancing SaGa 1? I'm thinking of buying a cartridge of the SFC version and applying an English translation to it using Retron 5, but I'm wondering if there is a cheaper (and legal) alternative.

Just asking because I have this thing where I refuse to play a game in a series unless I've played the previous titles first.

There was a PS2 remake that was supposed to be very good, only got released in NA and Asian territories though (no EU/PAL release) so if you're like me and live in the EU region, you won't be able to play it that way unless you buy a copy of the NA version and rip the iso and either play via emulator or cracked PS2. There is also a fan translation of the SNES version.

I actually have and played quite a bit of the PS2 version back when it was released (this was back in my mid-teens when I didn't care about playing a series in order). The game being one of the ugliest things I've ever seen completely turned me off from it, hahaha. I usually never stop playing a game because of the graphics, but everything about it was disgusting looking.

Definitely would prefer to play the original.

Dammit, I'll totally play this a lot more on my Switch than mobile. Feel bad for double-dipping but dammit I want more SaGa games to come stateside.

Nice! Can't wait for tomorrow now - I have the day off work too so it works out nicely.

I noticed OP stated it IS cross buy for PS4/Vita? I thought I had read that it will not be cross buy & SE often doesn't do cross buy. Good news then if it actually is. Doesn't matter too much for me though as I am 100% going for the Switch version!

It's out tomorrow.

But, yes, praise Kawazu for this amazing Christmas miracle.
Can you imagine my disapointmentwhen I saw that it wasn't out yet!
It's good, I won't wait long anyway.
It's the only Saga along with SF1 that I didn't put any significant time in.
And for once I won't have to deal with Japanese, it's Ministrel Song all over again.
I hope I'll have time for something else before 2019...

Wait, it's out in Japan now? Would like to hear of impressions of performance for anyone who dips in on Switch there.

How hard is the game in terms of roadblocks and such. I dont have much patience for that in games with turnbased combat. Other than those concerns, game sounds great.

If all of this wasn't enough to convince you, keep in mind the beautiful art of Tomomi Kobayashi for this game !

If this wasn't enough convincing...then you have no soul, my condolences.
Always loved the character art for the SaGa series. So good.

Damn, I don't remember the game being ugly. Perhaps it's a matter of taste, I suppose. It wasn't the best looking game, but I thought it had an interesting visual style. The characters are deformed, though, which could put people off.

The midgame can be pretty hard if you don't grasp the mechanics and spend too much time grinding earlier on. Luckily the remake has a bonus dungeon that helps with playing catch up.

As a new person to the series...good luck. I think RS 2 is actually not that bad in terms of difficulty, but it has its moments. The good news is that there is a lot of freedom. However, for these games, I usually break my trend and say it's okay to pull out a guide because sometimes they can be vague on what to do next.

If you can enjoy it enough and get past some of these tough moments, it is rewarding.

Even for such an old game, when I played this, I was surprised by some of the cool story scenarios there are.

Random encounters are ridiculously present like some titles of its era? Did they add any QOL improvements?

There are no random battles, you can see enemies on the map. If you touch them the battle starts. If you are dashing and you touch them then your formation becomes a straight line. If they touch you from behind your formation gets flipped.

Formations are super important as well.

Will happily double dip for this! I picked this up on the Play Store, but the lack of buttons when avoiding/engaging enemies annoyed me. Can't wait to play this with a controller.

SaGa series has been great for me. Some things I have always loved are the interesting way to learn techniques, the freedom and multiple paths/endings, the races, the crazy lore and storylines these games have (especially Frontier) and the generational storylines (this game and SaGa Frontier 2). So many unique elements about this series. The games don't always work out, but they always bring something unique to the table.

Hope maybe we will also see Scarlet Grace get a port somehow.

Going to be cautiously optimistic that this is paving the way towards that. It's in Unity too for all that entails, but SE has been one of the better publishers with Unity games running on consoles anyway. Or period, I usually have to deal with v sync issues on PC but not with I Am Setsuna.

I'm all in even if this doesn't lead to Scarlet Grace. It' taken way too long for more of this series to be available in English.

Ok I'm in. Saga frontier 1 and 2, regardless of how obtuse they were at times, are classics to me. Never played any of the previous games so I'm definitely up for this

I'm between getting this on Vita or my New Vita Switch. Might as well get it while it's discounted. I wanted to get it when it released on mobiles but I was salty the Vita version didn't make it over.

How is the localisation anyway?

Downloaded the Vita version before going to sleep. Will play it on the way to/from work.

It's currently 20% off with PS+ as well, haven't followed the news, so maybe that's old.

Wait, cross-buy? I bought the (Jp) Vita version last year, does that mean I can play it on PS4 now?
Is there cross-save too?
If so, praise Kawazu-shin!

Edit: Nope, it tells me to buy it again...

Grabbed it on the SA eShop since It's only €16,50 there!

Thanks I love when they do it like this!
Grabbed it and thanks to Switch I know I'll actually play it

Honestly, the way battles work in this game is worse than random battles. But that's just my opinion.

If you touch an enemy you get into a fight. If you touch an enemy, no matter what direction you or they are facing, while running, then you break formation (essentially a back attack). So basically you need to walk everywhere to prevent that.

(Assuming that's what Aeana is referring to)

Is it like the first game, where the number of enemies in each area was absurdly high? I remember that making the whole field encounter aspect a bit of a moot point, seeing as how you frequently can't avoid one enemy without going straight into another.

By all reports, not great but it's a SaGa game and story isn't a heavy focus.

Can't wait to check it out. Anyone know if there will be any Pro/X enhancements? (probably not, but won't hurt to ask), gonna get it for the X

so apparently the game is not cross-buy, not Vita TV compatible, and requires PS+ for the discount (even though every other platform just gets the discount no matter what, wtf happened there?)

it looks like I'll be going Switch or PC, pending impressions. Do we know if it's Steam/Windows store only or will it show up on Humble or GOG?

Bought for when I'm (eventually) finished with XC2. Will be nice to play a Romancing SaGa outside of emulation. Hopefully it will do well enough for a remake of the third...
