It's kind of a simplification of early Gundam tropes with a very 90s bish aesthetic and an early series where clearly model kit sales factored heavily in design choice. Has a godly OST tho

The old Bandai DVDs only have the 5.1 track.

In case anyone here was wondering how different the two tracks sound, here's the:

Original theatrical mono

&

5.1

I showed these clips to a friend after I told him that I was importing the French version. He's not even a Gundam/anime fan and he agreed with my choice.

Japan!
I finally made it over. It said someone had already registered my username Wubby though but I'll see if I can get it back.

god hand is nice. not sure if they're in stock though. for a while they were hard to find but i seen them avail recently

God Hand are the best and will give the cleanest cuts. I've tried every nipper. But God Hands aren't without their faults. They will break at some point. I've broken three by now. Two of the times it was my own darn fault for trying to cut something just a bit too thick. They list that you shouldn't cut anything thicker than 2mm and if you stick to that they should last you a long time. The third pair I recently broke on that damned High Resolution Wing Gundam. The glossy white and blue plastics are so hard, even harder than some clear plastics. But due to the gloss factor getting as clean of a cut as possible is exactly why you would want to use the God Hands in the first place, so you don't have to go back and sand or file the nubs and ruin the pretty gloss coat on that kit. The one cutting blade on the Godhands is really thin which makes it easy to snap, but due to how thin it is and how sharp they really cut through plastic like butter.

When I was at the Tokyo Hobby Show last month I was talking with a rep from God Hand about them. They were initially really hard to get because they were all made by hand at that point. Around middle or end of 2016 they switched over to making them by machine which greatly sped up the process thus their greater availability.

I just got Gundam Versus and Victory Gundam's description hyped it up as the darkest and most realistic depiction of war and death in all of Gundam. So is it any good? For reference, Zeta is my favorite and I loved its ending.
Victory is tied with Zeta as my favorite Gundam show...it's dark as fuck...darker than Zeta dark. It's got one of the best villains as well, also Zanscare are crazier than that Titans.

God Hands are both very fragile and expensive. They usually go for around 2.5~3x the price of a Tamiya cutter. I personally wouldn't recommend it to builders who are just starting. Either way, when you get a God Hand, you'll have to get another side cutter too. First cut with the cheaper one, then final cut with the God Hand.

The 1/550 Dendrobium is a cool kit for cheap. I wish that line of High Grade mechanics had continued on.

Kinda want a new animated UC series with a non-Newtype female protag, but I kinda know it won't happen anytime soon.

(Kamille is a Newtype and doesn't count.)

Wasn't that Twilight Axis?
I guess if you count that as a series. Not dissing it or anything, but it plays out more like an animated short, all things considered. Similar to Thunderbolt "Season 1", In a way.

I guess I meant something more substantial. Idk, like, something post-Unicorn with Mineva, but without the obligatory new-type prodigy would be cool. The first two times with Amuro and Kamille I can take, but Judau and Benagher are somehow the least believable things in UC to me, despite me liking their characters okay.

It sucks, at least its adaptation. Good animation, but disjointed story. I'd say Sunrise's 2 minute experiment failed.

You want an old type Gundam pilot? A Gundam would be shoved in somewhere. More and more people are becoming Newtypes as the UC timeline goes on.

I haven't built a Gundam since early this year, so I think I'm gonna break my fast on Char's Gundam The Origin HGUC kit.

Also, here are my toys.

Master Grades and my ugly old 1/100 HG Air Master. I wish they would give it a proper MG along with the Leopard.

And my beloved Gouf Custom, Ground Type, and Ez8. 08th MS Team got me in to the franchise.

My ultimate unwritten fanfiction is a Gryps War-era story with an adult female, old type main character. Maybe she pilots a Zaku that doesn't actually ever get upgraded.

Essentially, Stuff Sunrise Never Does: The Anime.

On another topic, I've been kicking around the idea of starting a channel with an emphasis on Gundam video essays, since those seem to be the hot video format right now. Obviously Gundam has a western following but for how ginormous it is in other parts of the world, it's a shame that on average the most common response among western anime/geek audiences is "Is that a Gundam Wing?" when it's a trove of sci-fi stories so vast it's like the forgotten Star Wars of the east.

The conundrum is that since Gundam is niche, videos trying to convert heathens to the light would only... Reach that niche audience in the first place. So IDK if the effort is really worth it.

What's a video essay?

Essentially I talk and pretend like I'm knowledgeable about something. Usually contains high, or at least "professional" production value, and is very austere. Many obvious or controversial hot-takes are made, and there's royalty free music in the background, usually atmospheric synth-y stuff. B-Roll that other people created is like 90% of the actual video.

I'm really enjoying IBO, but I get the impression folks are mild on it. What gives? Does it go straight to hell in season 2 or something? I'm finishing up ssn 1 at the moment and have really enjoyed it.

I thought it was pretty decent. I'm not sure what the majority opinion is but I liked S2 a tad bit more than S1.

If you are region free, buy the French Blu-ray. It has English subtitles and the original mono soundtrack you're seeking (plus the 5.1 track with new sound effects, voice acting and different music). The US Blu-ray only has the 5.1 track.

Picture quality is also quite good. Screencaps: https://imgbox.com/g/FO06GS7fVo

I have this box set and can confirm it's wonderful. Only knew the 5.1 sound from the French DVD edition and while it's not really bad the 2.0 is a lot better.
Picture quality is also great ofc.

I also pulled the trigger on their Zeta box set which is just as good with the expected downside of no original OP/ED.

Couldn't bring myself to buy their newly released ZZ though... Maybe I'll still do it because I want to encourage more Gundam BR being released in Europe but I can't say I feel bad about missing on this lol

Is this also the Gunpla thread?

I want to get back into models. What are some of the best 1/100th kits? Have there been any updated to Wing Zero(EW) or G Gundam kits?

http://p-bandai.jp/item/item-1000119284/

Was announced today if you are interested in dropping the coins for a Zero EW. They seem to make a EW Zero kit or variant every other year. There has not been a new MG kit from G in what... 15 years maybe. G was listed on the recent poll again, for a fan vote kit, and lost again. Think it came in 3rd which was its placing the previous year too. They are in need for a update but -shrug- when that happens.

Not sure exactly what the newest 1/100 sized Wing Zero EW is but the expensive Hi resolution kit came out recently. Hear it's a bit of a hand grenade with lose parts. 1/144 RG scale exists too. Other than that, from what I found the next 1/100 size one is from 2004. The other Wing Zero kits are the TV version or the kai.

As for best 1/100 kits it's kinda a personal opinion. Generally though most of the standardized 1/100 scale (MG) have been very good recently in terms of pose-ability, detail, proportion, and what not.

I got ZZ last week. From what I've heard ZZ is a bit of an acquired taste, but I'm still very curious about it.

Episode 1 is by the way encoded in the wrong framerate, but it's no big loss because it's a clipshow produced on tape. On the UK/French Blu-ray it's presented in 1080p 23.976fps instead of 1080i 29.97fps, so frames are being dropped. 'Toki wo koete' plays in episode 1, which surprised me a bit.

I'm hoping Anime Limited/@Anime will release more Gundam stuff. The UK side has been awfully quiet about Gundam lately. Didn't even say a word about it at MCM London last weekend. The French side recently asked fans what Gundam they want to see next: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd-r4H_ZW9Y1Lo6wKNuEuq-LuLMbWEPYdYdIiGvaGzTuanWzg/viewform

I haven't been following this a whole lot but my understanding is that the Gundam box sets are first and foremost an initiative from the French side.
They struck a pretty incredible deal with Bandai... but not only, which made the release viable.

It was originally a UK initiative, but Sunrise wasn't happy with the sales numbers of the UK 0079 TV Blu-ray sets. Then Sunrise decided to go after the French market as well. Z and ZZ were delayed for the UK, so that Anime Limited could save money by authoring the same disc for both markets, instead of authoring separate discs for each market.

HadesHotgun I'm glad you posted in here! The kits are so great to see close up. I really dig those 08th MS Team kits. How many of those were painted and which ones did you go with the out of kit colors?

Char's Gundam The Origin HGUC kit.
I just built that myself, but haven't added the stickers yet. I'm debating if I want to paint it or just sticker then top coat.

That looks gorgeous but if it's got the same type of hands as the original, there's no way in hell it can hold the Drei Zwerg Buster.

Honestly, it's a missed opportunity for a 2.0 kit, but I guess they didn't want to kill sales for the HRM.

Edit: Actually, upon closer inspection, the twin buster rifle has new hand grips? Don't know how much that'll help but we'll see. And lol at how the wings are backwards.

Sup yall.

Started a chronological rewatch of the UC timeline series couple weeks ago. About 10 years ago I watched 0079-> Z-> ZZ-> CCA but barely remember anything past Z.

Currently I've gone through 0079, 8th MS team, War in the Pocket, Thunderbolt S1 Movie, some of MS IGLOO, and currently going through Stardust memories. I'm saving Origins for last.

I know some diehards will say watch it in release order, but going through them per era has so far been great. The differences in art/animation/OST has been fine, I can appreciate the old stuff for what it is.

My biggest observation has been how epic and expansive the One Year War was, especially with the OVA's providing a background that's helped elevate how amazing Amuro and the Gundam were.

I loved how the OVA's showed slices of the struggle from both sides, also how there were non-newtype ace's.

Currently I'm considering dropping MS IGLOO (only saw the first episode) so that I can move on with SM and start Zeta already. I recall Z having my favorite mobile suits so I'm really itching to get it started.

One more observation: the remastered versions of the older UC series look so damn good.

I'll stop here for now, maybe post some other thoughts later.

Probably should have kept to the year of production for watching order. Since something like Thunderbolt's tech is weird in comparison to Gundams that are actually more advanced than it.

Is Unicorn better as the 8 episode OVA or the series? I wanna rewatch it and it's in Crunchyroll, but only as the series. I'm concerned about the editing. The dub was also really good and I don't think CR has it dubbed.

Wow CR had the dub but I guess it was just for a limited time, I wonder if it will come back eventually.

Re:0096 is good (also the songs for the op and ed are really good). Only odd thing is a few episodes you can tell where they cut it mid conversation, but since youre not litrally waiting another week for it, it doesnt matter.

The OVA is the best version. Editing is an issue in the TV series, but if you're going to binge watch it then the editing probably doesn't matter.

At first I thought you meant a full RG Dendrobium. Lol.
i would want that too but traditionally all special real grade versions of items like GN Arms Type-E, Meteor Unit, Strike Rogue + i.s.p. combo are pretty much HG versions packed with new RG decals in a new box.

if they were to do a RG Dendrobium, i expect the same treatment.
