Last had glasses about 7 years ago, when I got a puppy and he chewed them up. Never replaced my glasses, because at the time I had a very slight astigmatism and the difference between using my glasses and not wasn't that huge.

Well shit, I guess my eyes must have deteriorated in those 7 years, because I am absolutely floored at the difference. It's almost overwhelming, everything is so much more detailed now. When I put the glasses on for the first time at the optometrist, I swear I felt like I could see every pore on her face.

This is honestly pretty awesome. Anybody else ever felt this way after getting glasses?

Yup, it's incredible how much I missed without glasses

Too bad I never wear them unless I'm watching TV. I need contacts.

I mean, I feel that way if I take them off for any extended period. It's like going for SD to HD.

this is exactly how I used to describe if an HDTV was worth buying when they first started popping up "Remember the first time you put on glasses? Well, HDTV is like that. Buy one."

I avoid wearing mine a lot so the difference can feel pretty pronounced sometimes. I need a better prescription right now probably so we could probably go ultraHD. Makes me want laser tbh but that's so much money to spend...

When I was 12 I refused to wear glasses outside of my home, I finally go contacts when I was 15 and had a similar feeling.

I guess without having a frame of reference, I just never realized how blurry everything is.

I was eating dinner with my family tonight, and I would pull down my glasses and compare. I could see ridges on this light fixture with my glasses on, but with them off, all texture was gone and they looked smooth. It was kind of shocking.

I have some prescription lenses coming for my VR headsets as well, I am so excited to see what that's like.

Also, I can feel my eyes already less strained. I used to have headaches all the time, as soon as I put on these glasses it was like my eyes were thirsty and just took a huge gulp of cold water. My eyes feel so good right now.

7 years! I had to go a summer without my glasses and at the end of it I was dying to have them again.
Putting them on is the equivalent of drinking a cold soda on a hot summer day. I really can't live without them.

Yeah, I remember when I first used my glasses to watch TV.

Before, I didn't get the hyperbolic claims about HDTV, that you could see people's pores. After, I was blown away. I was like "What the hell, how can I see so much detail in Gordon Ramsey's face."

I had to get glasses for the first time at the beginning of this year, I was completely blown away by how much they improved my vision (which I didn't even know were going bad!). It was a night and day difference.

It was the same for me when I got glasses a few years ago but I never wear them. It changes the shapes of things

I do notice some barrel distortion on the periphery of my vision, but I got smaller glasses specifically to try and cut that down. Overall the trade off is worth it to me, because the center of my vision is so, so much clearer now.

Started wearing glasses earlier this year and I felt the same way. Never realized how terrible my eye sight really was, how much of a blur everything had become, until I started wearing them. I still look at leaves in the trees in amazement sometimes with how much detail I can see in them now compared to before.

I attempted not wearing for a period of time because they were uncomfortable (until I got them fixed, left them in the car and they got warped a bit) and it was dreadful. I couldn't even see people's faces from a distance. I would sometimes squint at people trying to figure out if that was someone I know or not.

Get that feeling every few years when I get new glasses. I'm probably due for a new set for 2018.

I remember getting glasses for the first time in the 9th grade and I was shocked at being able to see individual leaves on the trees from a distance. People had faces instead of shapes. I didn't realize how bad my eyesight was just like many others in this thread

Same thing happened to me. Went my whole life without glasses, until I started to noticeably feel that I couldn't make out far away objects. Finally got a check up, and the doctor told me I probably needed glasses for the past 8 years...

I didn't drive that much in the recent years, and I got along just fine, so I never knew what I was missing.
Crazy how much they helped.

One thing you'll feel, is how blurry everything is after wearing them for a few hours. I guess what you don't know doesn't hurt. But now you'll constantly notice it.

Oh my gosh yes, I went outside and looked at the grass and leaves and was just amazed at how much more detail I saw. Also, at night, lights seem to have much less of a halo now, making everything much clearer and easier to see. Outside of the restaurant we ate at, they had a light pointed down at some grass and I could see all these reflections off of each blade of grass. I hadn't seen with that clarity in so long.

My eyesight going HD was what I experienced as well when I got my glasses earlier this year. Never knew my eyes were that bad, just thought that was what vision was.

god i would love laser eyes or failing that contacts that i can jam in my face that don't take an obscene amount of time (i'm just bad at it, don't @ me) just so i know what that sensation is like again

for me it's like going from 8-bit pixelart to HD...

Without glasses I can't see someone's face unless the person is more or less three fingers away from my nose.

Breaking my glasses and having to walk on the street alone is always a fear of mine, pretty sure I'll get ran over in no time.

I don't really remember how it felt to get glasses when I was 10 or so but I remember how incredible it felt to have perfect peripheral vision when I got contacts at 14. Getting LASIK in adulthood, though, felt like a miracle. My eyesight has regressed somewhat in the last year (sigh) but I still regularly marvel at being able to see clearly without lenses, even 7 years later.

So lasik, that fixes astigmatism mainly, right? I have major astigmatism in one eye, which is what my glasses correct.

If you are gettin barrel distortion I'm assuming you are a minus prescription and need to get them adjusted to have less face form. 99% of the time that's the cause of barrel distortion.

When I got told I needed glasses it took six days for them to be ready. That was a brutal six weeks - after doing the eye test and seeing things sharp, I found it really difficult to focus on anything in my vision because it all felt like a complete mess. It was like finding out I needed glasses broke my eyes.

Then when I got them it was one of the most amazing feelings I've ever had. So much clarity, crispness and beauty in everything!

I remember a few weeks later I went to Disneyland and I cried watching Fantasmic - I had spent such a long time not realising something could be as beautiful as those sweeping lights and fountains. It felt like it had changed my life in that moment.

I feel much more casual about them now. I like how they look and I can see better with them. The main benefit now is that they help to cover up the enormous bags that are always under my eyes that I can't seem to shake...

Nope, typically lasik is for people with high minus scripts, think -6.00 and higher.

I have a lot of astigmatism myself, I'm -1.00, -2.00 x 172 and -1.25, -1.50 x 015. I would never be a candidate for lasik. You might be able to do ortho k, not sure if there is a minimum script for that or not.

Reminds me of my sister-in-law's brother while we were all in Cuba for my brother's wedding. My brother looks over at him squinting while watching the show so he gives him his glasses. The first words out of his mouth after putting them on were "Is this what the world is supposed to look like?".

Had glasses for 90% of my life.

Then I got Lasik.

I went from 20/20 vision to 20/10 vision. Went to the optometrist, and I was 1 of only 3 people who was able to read the 20/10 chart correctly.

I could see leaves on trees so clearly, that one time I spent 10 minutes just looking at one, looking at all the detail. It is great.

Yup, minus prescription. If I were to go to the optometrist, what should I tell him?

Tell him you are experiencing barrel distortion, if he knows what he's doing he should immediately flatten the front of the frame. What state do you live in? Most states do not require an education to become an optician and it can be tough to find a decent optician if you don't reside in one of those states.

Texas

The dude has all his degrees up on the wall, though. My mom had told me to go to walmart (bleh) but I told her I was specifically interested in going to someone with a degree.

Yea Texas isn't a licensed state but if you found one that has a degree in some form of ophthalmic science stick with them. Even here Walmart is a place opticians go to die, avoid at all cost.

This reminds of my cousin when she had laser surgery. She was far sighted and was for a while without glasses. She suddenly went from poor sights to perfect in a matter of hours. She said that everyone's faces looks ugly now. Also she said she is replacing the carpets asap because they look like shit lol.

LASIK can be effective on both astigmatic and non-astigmatic eyes, but I believe that there's at least one subtype of astigmatism that cannot be treated using LASIK.

If I had been able to wear glasses without feeling dizzy/headachy constantly and had my eyes not developed sensitivity to contacts, I would not have done LASIK. It's a super safe surgery... but it's still surgery and there are risks (like permanently losing the ability to use lenses to correct to 20/20 sight). If your life and livelihood depend on not wearing corrective lenses, LASIK is a fantastic option. Otherwise, if glasses/contacts are perfectly functional, then don't, like, be in a rush to laser slice your corneas. :)

I just got new glasses a couple months ago after having a pair for like a decade, unfortunately the crispness went away after a few days :\

I really adore the frames and think they look much better on me than those old ones

(you guessed it they're thick rims)
