trans people: hey I think this is kinda offensive

y'all: YOU FUCKING SJW BLACK COMEDY JESUS IS A SAINT HE HAS NEVER BEEN WRONG PRAISE HIM AS HE HAS RETURNED FOR ANOTHER DAY, god I hate when certain groups ruin discussion by calling me on my bullshit, shut them down mods

What in the world? Chapelle clearly has (let's be generous) a blindspot when it comes to addressing trans people. It sucks.

But don't lie: https://www.resetera.com/threads/da...ecials-on-dec-31st.12395/page-11#post-2495864

Joke probably wouldn't have landed if he'd said he believes trans people because they undergo sexual reassignment surgery to more closely align to their gender.

It's reductive and crass but is it worse than saying Oscar Pistorius was a mediocre athlete who was so committed to winning a gold medal that he chopped his legs off?

I thought "Yuck" was worse. That's just low hanging fruit.

Really enjoyed both specials. I come away thinking about different topics.

You know in the second ep crazy thing is I bet he is right with saying he thinks even more fucked up shit goes on in Hollywood. How many times have we read of child sex abuse "rings" and so on in Hollywood.

I just watched the second special. Comedy-wise the gay dude jokes were easily the best. I NEED SOME WATER had me in stitches. He's not wrong.

At first I thought he was kind of dismissive to #MeToo but then as he started to talk more about it, I realized where he was going with it. The Pimp story at the end and comparing it with Hollywood and how it treats it performers was poignant. Less funny, but more informative. I mean, you can tell he gives a fuck. He just jokes about it too. It's his job, so I can't blame him.

Really good pair of specials. I didn't give last years a chance so I'll be watching those when I get the chance.

I loved this one just as much as much as the first Netflix special, Dave Chappelle is by far my favorite comedian.

I think Dave saw something in Hollywood that even till today his still not able to say what it is, as he said in that pimp story its our little secret.

After seeing how hard Cosby and Louis CK fell, the fact that he starts his special off with a bit about how dope he is definitely seems like a move of good faith that he's not guilty of anything scandalous, lol.

Dave is surprisingly one guy I'm pretty confident hasn't done anything. Dunno why. Just a feeling maybe. Like I wouldn't be surprised if it came out but I also wouldn't be surprised if it never did you know what I mean?

First one was better than second, which was more a really long quirky story.
But I dunno, he seems to be losing it every special I watch... he is not telling jokes so much as just long as stories that derail into side things...

I agree with you that Hollywood probably has way worse secrets.

Yeah it's fucking scary thought but I hope one day things come to light if any of these rumours are true. I'm sure everyone back in the 90s heard about how women were being subjected to systematic sexual abuse in Hollywood to try and get a role.

I think Dave saw something in Hollywood that even till today his still not able to say what it is, as he said in that pimp story its our little secret.

Yeah, I really enjoyed that story and how it threads itself into his success. In a way I feel like he is saying he is that he himself is that bottom bitch being rung out for a few more miles by Hollywood in a fucked up system. Maybe I'm wrong, but that is how I viewed that.

....This comedy special
How he handled trans jokes in it
Humor

Yeah, but we can't defend the jokes.

There is no reasonable defense that can be offered of Dave Chappelle's specific transphobic jokes. Defending his specific transphobic jokes will be treated the same as any other post in defense of transphobia from this point forward.

On that subject we can only talk about how they are wrong.

Dave made the same point about Hollywood on Inside the Actor's Studio years ago, just in a different way. He used Martin Lawrence's public breakdown to make the same analogies. Hollywood is a sick environment.

I wonder how far it goes tbh.

And yeah, seems clear to me that Dave is the bottom bitch in the story. He's told a similar story using the Bushman as an example.

I think he wanted to entwine some truth into that second act, When he was telling the story i automatically replaced the brief case with his $50M Deal.

Kind of half in the bag half out for the first special. I liked the second half of it a lot more than the first which most felt like Dave bitching after the kind of funny Timmy and his Mormon family joke. Overall not bad but uneven.

You know what, I've heard those type of arguments. My dad makes such arguments. I'll relay one to you now.

Something like,"black women going off about their problems gets in the way of black unity. We can solve the woman problems after we unite and get respect." Which is another way of saying,"wait for your meal." Here's another thing my dad would say,"black women own the black American community and black men are treated as not important." Of course, he doesn't argue that those grievances should wait for black unification.

It's bullshit. This idea that some other black persons rights and right to basic human dignity and self respect because of "derailment of the movement"? It's bullshit. Black power speaks for all black people. Not some. Not the ones we don't like. It means all. And if some get left behind that's not acceptable. At least, that's the Black Power that I know and represent.
And I can only scoff at this and say "really?"

Getting called a fag non-stopp and laughed at for dressing like a girl, and getting the shit kicked out of me and thrown down hills while they laughed was out of fear of a derailment of the black empowerment movement?
You don't have to divert your resources, you just gotta at minimum not be like Dave Chappelle towards trans folk. Not even asking you to to anything, merely not to do something... that's even easier and doesn't require any resources

Blacks that identify as lgbt are still black at the end of the day. They will still benefit from the pro black struggle. There is a legitimate conversation to be had about how competing social justice movements coming out of the 60's weakened the black struggle.

Mind expounding how? I'm pretty sure assassinating our leaders, destroying our organizations, peddling crack into our neighborhoods, letting those same neighborhoods fall into decay and poverty had more to do with it, but that's just me. The man who wrote King's I Have A Dream speech was a gay black man. It's possible to care about both. That said, I do care far more about the black struggle but I shouldn't be told by anyone that I am forced to choose. Whether it's between black rights, womens rights, or lgbt rights. All are important to me and being told that these things "weaken the black struggle movement" makes that movement feel very fragile indeed. Are you telling me that women's rights also isn't a black issue? How couldn't it be? Please explain why.

I guess the question is why would you defend them then?
You don't have to agree with it, but the belief that nothing is sacred in comedy is hardly an uncommon or controversial one.

I'm not going to defend specific jokes he made but I don't necessarily think people should be silenced for believing the above.

I guess we will never know.
Well, I think we will know when Dave comes out of his hole in another 12 years, doesn't see his shadow, and remarks that the nation has matured from being "bitch ass niggas" with "brittle ears" and decides to make another special. On a serious note, I hope Dave doesn't retreat this time and stays. It's absolutely amazing he came back and did 4 specials of material. The second(fourth) special was astounding to me because when he is talking about Louie and Weinstein and the previous special was about Trump that means he is truly right with what he said in his first special; He IS too good at stand up comedy. That's 2 full sets in a year. Even the most active comedians we see usually top out at 1 set per year and a half. I don't want to backseat mod but it really is hard to talk about his jokes if you gatekeep and he's dealing with sensitive topics.

That Iceberg Slim section was the craziest thing I heard and I need to find that book.

This is a complex issue that I can't do justice myself. There is a lot to be said about how centuries of chattel enslavement couldn't break the black family (the foundation of our community), yet post-civil rights era movements and policies did...Johnson's "war on poverty" comes to mind.

Guys like BGS IBMOR and Professor Black Truth (Youtube personalities) really go in depth on that.

On to the second.

I believed the Pimp was Comedy Central execs. The one last job being his next season of his show that was going to get him millions of dollars but put him on the breaking point. I believe the importance of this is seen in the distribution of money. Where Dave isn't getting the lion's share of the profit but a cut of it although doing all the work- he wrote, produced, and acted it. This also reminds me of Chris Rock's bit of Wealth vs Rich. "Shaq is rich, but the white man who signs his check is wealthy"
I think he saw that if he accepted that money he would be accepting to go pass his breaking point. I'm reminded of his Oprah interview where he talks about where he wouldn't wear a dress. He wouldn't prostitute himself like that for cheap comedy. I think if he kept doing the show he would've reached that point like <insert black comedian> where they did accept the dress for a quick pay check and a cheap laugh

No, not sure that I do. There's usually no way to gauge if someone famous is for sure a sex abuser or not. That said, it seems pretty likely you're innocent if you're reveling in your awesomeness as an opening bit on your new special during a time when everyone, including the most successful and revered comics, is being called out on any sex creep shit they did, haha.

I thought it was some sort of allegory for the black experience in the US
