The game is built around this dude. Who is completely new. So I don't think it's too big a stretch.

It's a wonderful mechanic, but it's really just Kirby's copy ability in reverse. Each capture isn't a whole new character to play as (thank god) - they're essentially one or two special moves that would have been granted by a power-up in previous Mario games. As such I don't see them as making the gameplay that different.

For example... capturing a fire bro in this game is this game's equivalent of a fire flower. Capturing that reptile dude is this game's equivalent of a cape or racoon tail. And so on. And yeah, they're brilliantly done and very inventive, but ultimately they're power-up replacements.

So what's some general consensus on the Broodals? Are these guys some you'd like to see stick around? AKA like future Mario Kart contenders? Or should they be lost to the wind after this game?

I started off kind of hating them and their designs, but they did slowly grow on me over time. I still don't really know how I feel about them, but I don't think I'd mind seeing them pop up again. Also their battle theme is sick.

They were good, but definitely a one off thing for me.

I love Cappy. Aside from his gameplay function of capturing, he is a good character. He manages to be helpful and somewhat talkative, but unobtrusive. Do people generally agree with this?

He's also cute as a button. I recently did a scarecrow challenge where he was telling me not to leave him behind. I mentioned this before, but I was SO IMPRESSED at the fact that he tells you if there is anything left in one of the challenge areas - a great QoL addition.

Edit: I also almost exclusively play Odyssey while wearing the Cappy I bought. Except on the bus and stuff. $20 well spent? I think so.

Oh no, it's not inherently bad, collectathon scan be fun. But in terms of preference I'll take more linear challenging levels than open collectathon ones. I was just responding to the guy wonder why people playing Mario get hung up on the platforming, cause it's the basis of Mario.
I think SM3DW did a good job of translating Mario's original style to 3D but that's honestly the closest you'll get.

I think the game could use more and longer straight platforming sections, as I said on the last page. I don't think however that a) their number is insignificant nor b) that I'm not fairly regularly engaging in them. I get criticizing Odyssey from the angle of preferring Galaxy 2 or 3D World along these lines. I don't get ignoring that these sections of the game do exist. I really don't get how you can play the game just encountering countless random exploration moons and no platforming moons. I feel very much pulled along from place to place doing little tasks to find moons as I do so and just encountering the platforming rooms.

I think their biggest problem is perhaps that they tend to be too short going with the game's focus on brevity and constantly changing things up on you.

Also throw in the platforming adventure sequences of the main campaign.

Cappy would be an All time great companion even if just for the awesome movement tech he brings to the game. Adding in the capture mechanic, personality, and QoL features and he might be my favorite ever.

The Snow Kingdom isn't the only song that sounds like something out of Zelda. I'm getting some real Majoras Mask vibes from the song that plays when you arrive at Seaside Kingdom.

Not whatever the normal theme will be, but the song that plays while you unleash the fountains.

I wonder if the concept of traveling to the different worlds via the globe was developed to encourage/inspire future DLC. Kinda weird there hasn't been any discussion from them about future plans for that, they seem pretty open about it with all their other games.

It's been mentioned on here before by others, but I would love some throwback kingdoms like Delfino Plaza or a Galaxy Kingdom. They would make great additions for DLC. New worlds would be great too.

I like them but at the same time I wouldn't be too disappointed if we didn't see them show up in all the spinoffs. (Except Mario + Rabbids where they are a must!)

I think the essential characters we need to see in Mario Kart and the like are Cappy and Pauline.

I am surprised (but love) how people want DLC for this game. I may be biased (probably am) but I think Nintendo has one of the best approached to DLC in terms of what they add and how much it costs. I don't see nearly as many people complain about Nintendo DLC as I do about other devs/publishers.

Yeah, the writing for Cappy especially shines, and it reminds me a lot of Telly Vision from the brilliantly localized GameCube game Chibi-Robo!

In his characterization, Cappy hits a lot of the same notes as Telly, especially in the really subtle aspects of his writing. For instance, if you look at the sun while capturing a viewfinder, Cappy will warn you about hurting your eyes. Also, the subtle catchphrases like "well there it is" or the like when Cappy finishes giving you a hint on the Odyssey is classic Chibi-Robo character writing. Finally, of course, both Cappy and Telly-Vision fly.

Odyssey and Breath of the Wild are really reassuring me about the quality of NOA's localizations. I found Animal Crossing New Leaf's writing distressingly dull and soulless, but more recent projects seem a lot quirkier and have more personality.

Wow! The seaside kingdom is so beautiful. I get mad Majora's mask vibes from the initial music. Love it. Also, the residents of the snow kingdom remind me of Gorons.

Basically, if you removed Cappy, but added powerups, the game would be totally different, and fall apart in a lot of ways. But I guess how significant you want to call his addition, to 3D Mario is up to each person individually.

I did it. I fucking did it. I got 100 on jump-rope.

I read on Twitter to jump whenever the woman says "Hey!". I recommend that to people who's struggling.

Yeah i was having trouble at first, but eventually found my groove. I think where you stand also affects the jump rope game. When I finally hit 100 i managed to get 350+ before losing.

Yeah. I think it's an absolute masterpiece in the genre - really - it's just not the reinvention or leap forward that people were saying, and that's what I don't get. Where did this idea that it's some incredible step forward in Mario gameplay come from?

The game itself is perfectly obvious about what it is trying to be later on in the game when the little Mario 64 references come thick and fast - and, more blatantly, references to all other 3d Mario games are specifically left out. It's just the 'new' game in the Mario 64 type and it wears that on its sleeve. And it's amazing at it, and that's enough.

But those hyping it up to be something revolutionary were playing something different to me. A game can be a masterpiece without being a revolution. Galaxy, on the other hand - now that was a mindblowing experience combining gravity mechanics, IR pointer gameplay, motion controls and 2D gameplay in a 3D world for the first time... that was a true revolution for the series.

I haven't seen too many people calling this game "revolutionary", but rather the next step forward in the style of Mario 64. This is very much an evolutionary step for the sandbox subset of the series.

So yeah, in a year with several quality contenders, this is probably gonna be my GotY. Just cleared all I could through NDC. It's a little easy but the game's allowance for creativity trumps all. Dat music too.

Nintendo still the Disney/Pixar of games. Playing all kinds on all systems, I'll always pick theirs up (even if it's late in the system life) when they make things like this.

They do a good job. Honestly, I love DLC (not to be confused with microtransactions or lootboxes) it's treated like an expansion. The Witcher 3 was a complete game, and had great DLC added. Breath of The Wild is an amazing game as well, and the expansion pass only adds things to the experience that I never felt I needed to have a complete game. Super Mario Odyssey feels complete, so I am happy paying some more for an expansion that adds some more worlds to explore.

Okay I think I've figured out how to do spoilers,

What I really enjoy about what I'm seeing now are the various npcs from each of the kingdoms popping up all over the place. It's a nice little touch and it makes it look like they're all on holiday, along with some adorable dialogue.

Its also worth noting that they haven't made a sandbox Mario in 15ish years, and Sunshine is divisive, so 21 years since the last game in this style that was universally loved. This game didn't need to be a reinvention of the Mario 64 formula. It just had to remind people what made 64 so great, and all the craziness they threw in with Cappy and the capture mechanic is just extra goodness in my book. If they go back to this well for the next 3D Mario (which I expect given the reaction to Odyssey), then maybe they'll need to shake it up a bit more.

I Really hope this game get's a lot harder or they at least add in a few more straight forward platforming sections to the post game.
Just finished the metro kingdom and have nearly all the moons available(i think) for all the other levels.
It's a good game but i'm hoping things get better...fingers crossed

A ton of that stuff opens up post game. I wouldn't worry about getting every moon btw. A lot of them unlock after you beat the game so you'll have to revisit levels anyway.

I was hugely disappointed with Seaside Kingdom the first time I got there. I love beach levels, and that one just didn't do it for me. Just didn't have that bright, Mario Sunshine aesthetic. Looked kinda dull, and the gameplay in and around the cliffs was also kinda dull. So I beat it and moved off immediately.

Upon coming back, I realised... the true brilliance of the level is all underwater. It's in the ocean trenches tunnels and joy of swimming around as a Cheep-Cheep. Exploring all the underwater sections flipped my opinion on the level 180 degrees. I actually had a similar experience with the Wooded Kingdom too.

Favourite levels: Seaside Kingdom; Sand Kingdom; Wooded Kingdom
Least favourites: Cap Kingdom; Lost Kingdom; (late-game spoilers)
Bowser's Kingdom (great aesthetics but ultimately a linear level more in the 3d World style with an overreliance on the pokio capture)

Can someone tell me how people are doing the thing where you jump forward, throw your cap out, and then still reach the cap to jump again? When I throw the cap in midair mario just stops moving forward and falls for me.

I really hope i feel the same. It's clearly a good game but i'm not really feeling any sense of accomplishment at all, even less than 3dworld, which is a game i really didn't like after coming from both galaxy titles but at least they made you work slightly for your rewards(or at least it felt that way).
In this it feels like they don't even want players to reach the objective without getting moons because they fear players will loose interest or not feel rewarded enough.
They are almost drip feeding constant rewards which lessens any sense of accomplishemt from completing the original task, i realise that the main game needs to be fairly easy for younger players but i was hoping by venturing off the beaten path i would discover more challenging areas but they have all been far too easy so far.
post game content can't come soon enough by the sounds of it...

It's the dive move. It goes like this...

-Jump using B (or A)
-Press Y to throw cap - this will stop mario
-Immediately press ZL to start the ground pound motion, then press Y or X to dive
-Mario will jump forward with momentum out of nowhere towards his cap, and if timed right he'll bounce off it and you'll be able to dive again

Later on in the game you have to be able to do this to beat some races so you'd best practice.

Start a ground pound, and then press Y (cappy throw button). Mario will do a dive. You can do the dive anytime, but getting the cappy throw into dive takes practice, as you have to let go of Y for a moment and then press it again for the dive, quick enough to where the game still sees it as you were holding Y the whole time to keep cappy out.

Not sure if this is different with motion controls.

Count me in as someone who totally got a Great Bay vibe upon entering Seaside Kingdom.

Doesn't it just remind you how brilliant Majoras Mask is?

Odyssey is one of my favorite games of the hear just for giving me 3D Mario Water levels.

Very true! I actually figured out the Long Jump -> hat throw -> dive forward to launch off hat completely by accident because I was panicking while trying to make a long jump between two buildings in New Donk City. I remember landing it and thinking, that seemed like a happy accident, and it totally was. Spent time mastering that move afterward and it became so useful. In fact, it could be overextended by throwing the hat again after the launch and doing a second dive. The game doesn't let you launch off the hat a second time, but that added dive is definitely helpful.

I may well make a thread on this at some point in the future, but man, when I'm wandering about New Donk City; The soundtrack, the atmosphere, the scenery, all it makes me want it a New Donk City Building game starring Mayor Pauline.

Look at this screenshot and tell me you don't want to be the person responsible for building such an incredible sprawling metropolis?

With SimCity on the ropes and city builders massively under-represented as of late, I'd love to see Nintendo's take on the genre. [Plus they could then take the reigns of The Sims also by spinning that gameplay into a Tomdachi Life sequel]
