Sure are! there are even documented notes of toy companies brainstorming ways to expand the market for dolls, and coming up with the term "action figure" to attract the attention of boys.
Dont dolls have to resemble people and have moving parts? A GI Joe figure is definitely a doll, but a lot of figures and amiibo are just miniature statues.

Anyway, I bought a few customr Hot Toys heads and the detail on them is insane.

I adore visiting toy museum and watch 19th century dolls.

One emotional moment was when I visited the Holocaust Memorial in Israel

All these dolls belonged to Jewish children who fell victims

The only dolls I care for:

Some of these have great craftsmanship for what are mass produced toys, and the removable armors are just so cool.

Yeah, two years ago I restored an old Lady Oscar doll (got it for about 88 Dollar. I couldn't afford a mint one wich go for over 400 bucks).
I wad pretty satisfied with my first time attempt at a doll restoration..

Love dolls like Barbie but don't have patience or space. I bought a lovely Moana I don't really know what to do with it. Sims 3 fulfills my Barbie girl urges.

There is a particular feeling I get when I look at some of these. I sort of like the clothes but when I see the body, the skin, the head in particular it is a little bit creepy and I can't explain why. I don't get this feeling for figurines. It is like its uncanny. Maybe too realistic yet it looks so lifeless. Almost like I'm looking at something unnatural rather than a thing of beauty and art as you say.

Edit. I'm reminded of this animated short called alma

It's definitely the uncanny aspect. I have no problem sleeping in a room with small figurines, even realistic looking ones, and I have no problem sleeping in a room with stuffed animals with beady eyes.

As soon as you put me in a room with a doll with realistic looking skin, hair, and eyes, I'm going to feel my skin crawl a bit.

I think the realism but stillness and lifelessness of the dolls reminds me of a corpse which makes me feel uncomfortable.

Yeah I believe a popular theory about why uncanniness unsettles us so much is because of how it reminds us of death, both our own mortality and the mortality of others, and it also might have helped our ancestors learn to avoid dead things to avoid disease that spread through rot.

I collect 1/6 scale movie-related stuff. Most recent purchase was the Ghostbusters from Blitzway.

My Hot Toys collection is limited to DC stuff (Superman '78, Burton's Batman, Nolan's Batman, BvS, Arkham City/Knight) and I have a few of Sideshow's comic-styled offerings. I've been priced out for the most part though, one figure is almost a car payment these days.

I'm gonna be honest. I have no idea wtf dolfies are. Is that anime stuff?

Bro those aren't mine. I'm just admiring the craftsmanship of the photography and modeling.

Dollfies are the biggest doll company in Japan. Broadly, there are two main lines; Super Dollfie and Dollfie Dream. Super Dollfies are traditional resin ball jointed dolls, whereas Dollfie Dreams are made of vinyl and generally aren't considered true BJDs by the established fandom. As a general rule in Japan, resin dolls are classic fashion dolls aimed at women, whereas vinyl dolls tend to be aimed at male otaku. For instance, the 2B doll that made the rounds in the old forum was a Dollfie Dream

On topic, I'm a casual collector, though my tastes are pretty boring anime. I've got a friend who is really into the hobby and she makes her own heads and does their face ups. Her dolls look super cool and are a lot more aesthetically interesting than mine

Edit: Found a picture of one of my dolls

Nendoroids/figmas/etc are often posed and photographed with a story in mind. Especially Nendoroids can be easily customized.

FigureGAF does sometime discuss Ball-Jointed Dolls such as Dollfies and SmartDolls (there are many other brands), but it's rare because these dolls are quite expensive.

Cheaper are things like Azone's Pure Neemo dolls, or Obitsu's dolls.

I don't like the Super Dolfies from what I've googled.

They're got the dead eye look and big heads. Not my style.

My preferences are specific. If the head is too big, eyes too cartoony or anime, or one of those big dolls, or hyper realistic like the ones above, they do nothing for me.

More Barbie Style!

I bet hand crafting those clothes is probably a lot of fun. I do miniature painting (wargaming miniatures) and some model building (gunpla and cars) and to me making the clothes for these doesn't seem like such a big departure.

I own over 25k in custom figures and never once has the maker or anybody ever called them dolls not to mention my impressive Transformers Masterpiece collection. There is a clear distinction between a doll and an action figure. This isn't a hobby I picked up last night, and I already know the history of Barbie, GI Joe and such. I've got things in my collection that I would consider dolls yes, but I also have plenty that are action figures and there's a big difference.

I haven't done it myself but yeah, I can imagine it's loads of fun. And some people print out custom art for posters/records/other stuff that liven up doll houses.

This reminds me, I stumbled across an old plastic doll house recently. I bet I can restore it and pretty it up for my neices. I know doll house stuff is another can of worms but it's certainly relevant here.

This is lovely.

My problem with those dolls is that they look like they're on the verge of tears because someone called them ugly! =(

Does Hot Toys count as a "doll"?

'Cause otherwise, yes I have one.

I am more of a figurine person (not that there's much of a difference besides the targeted audience) but I am like you inasmuch as I enjoy setting them up to photograph, or just to have dynamic scenes around the house, so I def have been interested in getting some dolls if they're relevant to the ideas stewing about in my head.

My main issue is most things are all scaled differently. There are some pretty nice Star Wars dolls (for the price) in the Forces of Destiny collection:
maxresdefault.jpg

And I had been eyeing the Endor Leia (with Ewok) and especially Ahsoka Tano, but most of the figurines I have are like 6-8" while these are 11"and I can't really do anything with them. :/ I could get the Black Series Ahsoka figure which is scaled alongside my other figs, but it's older Ahsoka and I haven't actually watched Rebels yet :X so I don't feel as much attachment to that design.

Also wanted to say that I've been working in a toy dept. for around 3 years and it's always great to me to see these grown women come in and look at the Barbies for a dose of nostalgia, and suddenly realize there are now multiple body types. They always freak out. Great move by Mattel.

Love all these pics ITT by the way!

Don't have any, the thought crossed my mind when I saw it but I didn't give the house a closer look. I think it was meant for Barbie scale dolls given the really high ceilings with a vertical skew on the windows. Plus the cream, pink, and purple colors.

I'm actually kind of excited about this now.

How do you plan on pretty-ing it up? If you would like some items to decorate the house with I can point you to some Etsy's or you could look at them and come up with your own ideas and make your own.

That's a tough one. There are two routes as far as I can tell.

1. Restore it to the original look, pastel colors and all. Maybe add nice tile or wood floors and patterned walls. Planters with flowers on the windows. Brightly colored curtains.

2. Clean it and go all out with completely new colors to reflect real textures and materials. Clear plastic windows, wood trim, brick exterior, creeping vines on one of the outside walls.

The second would be more fun for me to do but the first could be more appealing for the kids. I'll likely go with the first choice.

And thanks for the furniture suggestions. I may throw in a couple of pieces if I get that far.

My mother was a Barbie collector in the late 90s/early 00s. She probably had around a hundred dolls (if not more) at the height of her collecting. She's sold nearly all of them off at this point, but she still has a handful of them.

For me, I was pretty big into Monster High for about two years thanks to how weird/crazy some of the dolls looked. Then the reboot happened and Mattel tried making the dolls more cutesy/friendly and I went cold turkey on the franchise. I had already been buying less dolls by that point thanks to the declining quality, however.

I also own a single Dollfie Dream. As neat as they can be, I can't ever see myself buying such an expensive doll again.

Here's a big pic that shows more detail and IMO shows the lack of detail compared to higher end dolls (these are around $20-30). I can take some pics for you next time I go into work, if you'd like!

Oh also, wanted to say that even though it's not really my bag, the Monster High folks are some clever mofos with some of the stuff they come up with.

This one was available a couple years ago. I thought it was hilarious the gamer girl happened to be the daughter of a troll :P
