I am playing Finding Teddy right now and it's really not that good, the interface is trash. I can't understand the hype for this game.

What is the very first adventure game you guys recall playing? Mine is this bad boy (not my pic):

When i got my godfather's Amiga, it had a few point and clicks: Mortville Manor, KGB, one beginning with a women taking a shower (can't remember the name), indiana jones, ...

I just looked up Finding Teddy on steam - surprised it has a 9/10 average user rating.

Mortville Manor is a very good looking game for a late 80s title.

The Black Mirror might go down for me as the worst, most obtuse adventure game I have ever played. The only reason I am continuing this mess is because of nostalgia. I borrowed the game from my local library once when I was in school (couldn't finish it then, of course). So I wanted to finally revisit this game.

I love the back story, the mysterious atmosphere, but fuck me if Future Games isn't one of the dumbest adventure developers ever. And they don't even have the excuse of early graphic adventure people in the 90s, when this was still a new genre (graphic adventures, that is, text based ones have been around since before the 80s)
Most puzzles force you to revisit rooms to pick up items, you can't interact with them before an arbitrary point in the story has been reached, often something as pointless as a passing remark in a line of dialogue. It forces you, multiple times, to just wait. Pass like 10 minutes by walking around, before it allows you to continue. And there is this fucking abomination:
c06ca93f-f754-4f77-a1c6-50d3fd166f6d.png

Behold the mouth of madness. A random sliding puzzle. This is the final state, the starting position is totally random, can even literally be unwinnable, according to some people. I found a save game just after it, luckily.

I know that Black Mirror 2 and 3 weren't made by this same group, are they any better? Might as well delete the entire Black Mirror bundle from my acount, once I am done with this, if not.

I'd say its slowness is what put me off.

Unfortunately it has some really slow parts later. The issue with the game is the movement of the playable characters is slow as well.

I hear the new Black Mirror (a remake I believe) is not any good either.

Ya know what would really help these ye olde PnC games form the 90s? Some of them at least: An objectives page/tab.
Thimbleweed Park has it and its a really help in case one is lost or forgotten what your main goal is.

In Beneath a Steel Sky I'd kept going around and interacting with objects and people but eventually needed to look up a guide on what to do next to progress to GROUND LEVEL. Turns out I needed to combine 2 items into a grappling hook and return to the starting area and use it to get into the Security Building. I can't remember if it was brought up at all during dialog with NPCs etc., but how would I know I needed to go into that building? Such a thing as a 'to do list' could've really helped.

BTW does anyone know what I need to do to trigger the dialog scene between Hobbins and Reich? I saw a video of the game online and it had the two talking about the protagonist but I'm not sure if triggering it requires me to stay on the overwalk for some time for him to come out of his workshop.

So while trying to remember the proper name of this
10499_front.jpg

I discovered that Wadjet Eye made animated shorts feature Rosangela & Joey

I need more of this please.
Incidentally enough I plan on replaying the Blackwell series again :) Whether it'd be after or before Night in the Woods depends on Bundles and refund grace periods :V

Also there are Unavowed dev diaries on Wadjet Eye's page if anyone wants to find out more about the game's development etc.

Ironic this thread popped up when I just started The Book Unwritten Tales 2 on the PS3 last night (free PS+). First P&C adventure game I played since Discworld (loved that one) and Gabriel Knight series. In a lot of ways this game reminds me of Discworld. Very charming, and all the references to modern fantasy from books, to movies/shows, and games is quite fun.

The part where you go to the library and travel back in time and they have the nice Amiga-like 2D graphics and animation, then back more to the Apple IIe/C64 style, then even further to Zork was a fun surprise.

Since it has been so long, the game had me hooked until 3am, well past my bedtime, lol. Definitely subscribing to this thread, since these games have been missing from my life for some time, and are a great change of pace to break 'gaming fatigue'.

This part in Beneath a Steel Sky is my favourite.
Is it me or are court procedures in PnC Adventure games always hilarious? There's the one from Tales of Monkey Island for one thing :P
...and well of course there's the Ace Attorney/Gyakuten series too~

I love point and click games. I grew up on Secret of Monkey Island, Sam and Max, Grim Fandango and a few obscure games my dad had around the house like The Feeble Files. But I've found newer ones, or even older ones I play for the first time recently just don't grab me the same way. I've tried a few: Deponia, Machinarium, Full Throttle Remaster, 2064: Read Only Memories... I hope I haven't grown out of the genre but I also have no idea where to start in finding newer games that I would actually like.

I don't think The Sexy Brutale is P&C(?) but it's one I've been eyeing. Anyone have recommendations or suggestions of how to find what I like?

Yeah the objective notebooks in Thimbleweed are so good. I thought those + the integrated hint line were both great opt-in features to keep the game moving when you need them but also totally passive/invisible if you don't want them.

I had to restart Black Mirror because the water pump puzzle left me in an unwinnable state. A few hours later, at the end of chapter 2, the same thing happened again with another puzzle and i just dropped it completely. It's like the game was designed in the 80's. I love the atmosphere but just no. Hoping the sequels aren't like that as i still wanna try them.

Anyone here played Shadow of Destiny by Konami? It was an excellent adventure time, especially for its time of release back in 2001, that dealt with time travel very well. It was about trying to catch your own murderer. Set in Germany. It is available on PS2/Xbox/PSP/PC - however it isn't on steam shockingly. It's a shame Konami made very, very few adventure games since. Graphically it doesn't hold up, it is also slow controls-wise but for those that can stomach both aspects, you'll likely enjoy it.

Good modern P&C's:

The Shivah (super short)
Ben There, Dan That & Time Gentleman Please (funniest P&C games since the lucasarts golden age)
The Book of Unwritten Tales
Dropsy
Primordia
Blackwell series (5 game series, first 4 are available in a bundle)
Technobabylon
Kathy Rain
Shadowgate 2014 (remake of the original, so only play if you don't mind dying quite a bit)
Thimbleweed Park

Broken Age should be added to that as well.

And Gray Matter.

Broken Sword 5 is decent, even if it might not have been all that.

Darkside Detective is a collection of 6-7 short stories and the humor's pretty good. Decent puzzles too.

Is Hiveswap in any way funny or approachable to someone not familiar with the source material? Part of the new humble monthly.

I didn't get far into the original source material/don't remember many details, and I quite enjoyed Hiveswap. It seems pretty approachable.

Thimbleweed Park

I'd put Fran Bow on this list as well.

Yeah, I dropped it too. Must say that I have also lost interest in its sequels. I went to look up the developers, Future Games. Apparently, The Black Mirror was their big hit, and all their later games sold like shit, until they had to close up shop in 2011. Can't say I'm sad for them, if the rest of their games was designed like this, it was only ever a question of time. It would been so easy to have a skip function for some of these insipid puzzles. I mean, do they think anyone wants to spend 30 minutes on sliding puzzles? Or maybe introduce a difficulty level, where on easy you just don't get to do those puzzles? Monkey Island 2 did that in 1991, and this came out in 2003. It's like they wanted to make this as hardcore and off putting as possible. Well, Mission fucking Accomplished.
It's just frustrating because after a while the actual story gets somewhat interesting.

this is kind of a random thought, but I haven't really spoken about it with anyone outside of some friends when I first finished the game

i was kind of... bummed out by the ending. i'm a little too far removed from to be super-specific, but the whole meta-narrative thing really undermined a really effective tone and cast, I thought. i don't remember feeling like it actually had anything to say?

I follow this tiny channel, "Grimbeard Diaries", that mainly does reviews of (sometimes obscure) adventure games. Just saw his review of "Bear With Me" which i never heard of before. His experience with the game sounds really intriguing and makes me want to check it out, despite the flaws he mentions:

Game on Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/bundle/2758/Bear_With_Me/

I can recommend the whole channel if you like adventure games and this very specific kind of humor displayed in the video above (I love it, personally, but YMMV):
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNmv1Cmjm3Hk8Vc9kIgv0AQ/videos

He recently reviewed Black Mirror 2&3 and I agree with his thoughts on those as well. I recommend them with some reservations if you liked the first (or even if you hated it, but you need to have played it first). It's at the very least an INTERESTING way to make a sequel:

Agreed on the story. They had my attention and lost it with poor puzzle design.
And when i come across sliding puzzles, i just scramble for the skip button or a guide immediately. Hate them.

I've tried to get into these games but the art style just really turns me off. Would you say what's there is worth it even with that caveat? I might give them another go.

Sorry for the double post but does anyone knows how to edit quotes into old posts? I feel like it's something simple that i'm missing lol

EDIT: Trying Tizoc's suggestion.

First click on reply to have the quote generated
Then edit your post and copy pasta it

Hey thanks :)

I quite enjoyed this one - it's a bit rough around the edges, and leans a bit too much on pop culture humour, but the central concept has a lot of charm and develops well.

Depends if you like British humour or not. If you do, it's worth it.
Yeah, the art isn't great but that dialogue is incredible. It's up there with the best comedy in games, not that there's much competition.

Best bit: Combining inventory items almost always gives a unique bit of dialogue, no matter how stupid the combination.

There is Time Hollow on the DS.
Timeholloweurope.jpg

It feels like a spiritual sequel to Shadow of Memories, and was made by the same designer, Junko Kawano.

I actually finished this title and was stoked when I heard it was from the main designer behind Shadow of Destiny. Unfortunately it is nowhere near as fun and not written as well. But I still recommend it for visual novel fans who have a Nintendo DS/3DS. This is the last adventure game I recall Konami making :[

I only played the first one. It was decent.

It's currently in a bundle: https://www.indiegala.com/point-and-click-definitive-bundle

Nice! A new Gabriel Knight as well? Whoo! Used to play the heck out of that series a long, long time ago.

I did not know there was more than one for Yesterday Origins.

Yesterday Origins is the second one. Yesterday is the original one, it came out in 2012 or so. It was also called New York Crimes in some territories I believe

Ah, that explains it. Yes, I mean the most current one that came out in 2016.

Just ordered a copy of the Blade Runner point and click off of eBay. Been wanting to give that thing a shot, and apparently all the original source code was lost, and it's Blade Runner so it would be a legal nightmare for GOG to get it.

That said, the last time I bought a PnC off of eBay it was Grim Fandango and like 2 months later that remaster was announced, so you know, look forward to the Blade Runner Westwood game rereleases.
