I don't care with ports, but they could at least give a discount for those who bought the previous version in Wii U :(

Newer doesn't automatically mean better.

I've been thinking about the games I expected to get and hoped would come to the Switch. If I got them I would only have enough games for 2 more years.

This had me reflect on what is actually made by Nintendo and 3rd parties and quite simply asa group they actually do fail at making games better than those in the past.

Broodwar is still not bested in the rts genres. There really is nothing like New Vegas. The scope of Fez is never going to be touched even though the Witness and Gorogoa outperform it mechanically.

There are genres that could be made but simply aren't.

Being old isn't inherently bad.

No. They announced a handful of ports coming in the next few months. They're still making new games.

Not to mention a countless series of indie games being given a new lease on life by being on a portable device that people are excited about.

I'm saying that it's unreasonable to assume that the Switch is being propped up by even a 'majority' of Wii U owners. That's not how console cycles work, and Switch isn't going to outsell the Wii U's ltd in the first year simply because most Wii U owners showed up a lot earlier this time, which is what you've suggested. Switch has seen the success it has in its first year specifically -because- it has wider appeal than the Wii U. More people wanted it, so more people bought it.

It's kinda weird at this point that people still think Switch sales are going to drop off a cliff. The Wii U sold 3.5 million in its first year. The Switch is on track for 14 million in its first year minimum.

Seems pretty consistent with what has played out with current gen consoles. Ports are probably fine anyway considering how few people bought a WiiU.

For me, Yes. Although there appears to be people who would be happy with a system which never released a new game and just provided a portable outlet for well regarded older games so I don't think it could ever reach a point for those people where it becomes "too much".

I mean, sure, but as a current Wii U/3DS owner it's making me feel like it's gonna be another year before I buy this thing. I already own (and still play) a good chunk of the library.

If you look at the amount of people owning a switch vs the wii u over it's whole lifetime.
It makes sense.

These game will feel just as new as games later in the switch's lifetime for most people.

It's early in the system's life, and incredibly hot right now. People just want to get content onto the thing as fast as possible. I don't think the Switch is going to turn into Vita. Once people have time, we'll get more original games and fewer ports.

Everyone does it, why is it a problem when it's Nintendo? They've delivered plenty of original content already, and of fucking course more is coming.

Also, are three threads on the same topic really necessary?

I'm just waiting on the Smash port. I don't care what else comes. Games for the Wii U might as well never existed since the Wii U was such a shitty console

After the first year which had only a few ports, I don't think so... Most consoles tend to be skewed towards more ports early in their life; the Switch is just starting to balance out.

Porting is fine, but let's be honest, Mario Maker, 3D World, Smash and even the HD Zelda updates are all much more appealing than Hyrule Warriors (especially given FE Warriors just came out a few weeks ago) and Pokken.

And i've mentioned Virtual Console in a few of these threads, but a library of classics will only
make the Switch more appealing. That we're still waiting for it is baffling.

I think it's fine, especially for a console that misses almost all of the big multiplatform games. It'd be practically impossible to fill all of the year with original content for Nintendo. They don't have to overdo it though.

For everyone who missed on the WiiU games, these ports are a boon.

For every other port which you didn't play, it is now the time to discover great games.

For the others... well, a "meh" reaction is to be expected. Nothing to do but to wait for the E3 for what you are waiting for (Yoshi, Fire Emblem, Metroid Prime 4, etc).

It's fine because I enjoy the Switch a lot more as a platform, but I'll be picking and choosing which ports I double dip on because I did spend a lot of time playing on my Wii U.

No problems at all. The more games the switch can have can only help. You gotta think that the mass market of switch owners probably just jumped back onto the nintendo platform and never got to try wii u titles. So it's good and i'm hoping all the gems from Wii u make their way too! (even i never bought all the gems for the wii u; so im glad i can get them on switch)

That and the switch had a SOLID start for 2017 with their game lineup. I figure we won't see a match in 1st party quality of new titles till 2019; which is fine.

These ports needed to happen. A lot of people missed them.

BUT I do feel the schedule is a bit whack. There was a lot of diversity exclusivity wise last year. This year (for this first half) there isn't much when it comes to stuff that isn't ports.

I have a wiiu and other consoles. So there's literally nothing appealing to me in-terms of exclusives that I haven't played in some capacity before.

At least it gives me some time for the backlog.

No. 80% of switchers missed the wii u, so This is easy nintendo money that will fund stuff like BOTW.

A port on Switch is a complete transformation for a lot of them to portable games. There's worth in that alone.

It's not like the switch doesn't have a lineup of killer exclusives.

One, this entire generation of consoles is already port heavy. And two, no it doesn't bother me for the Switch, as I bought it primarily as a to-go console, so now I'm getting the chance to pick up and play a ton of games I never got around to, wherever the hell I want to play them.

Nope. The more the better.

These ports are much more exciting, as they games being portable is a hugely more exciting than improved graphics etc.

Still want Tokyo Mirage, Mario Maker and XcX.

I'm fairly confident that none of the original dev studios will be working on the Switch ports.

Yea that's great. Most likely Nintendo just views this as an easy way to make money, fill its library, and they know gamers who have never played some of these games like DK:TF will think about buying them (like me).

And while these ports get pushed out, the original dev studios are working on brand new projects.

Win win.

I personally can't wait for the "Is the PS5 getting too port heavy?" thread in year 2 with people saying "There's brand new games coming out to the Switch, why would I bother with this port machine?"

The Switch is the first Nintendo console I've bought since the GameCube, I'm more than happy to have the opportunity to catch up on some stuff I've missed. I feel like I'm not alone in this situation.

Who is it good for? I guess it is good for new players or former WiiU owners (like myself) but buying the same game again for more than I paid for the WiiU version is not exactly great.

Today's surprise mini Direct revealed a few new titles for Nintendo Switch. Well, "new" is a loose term, because many of them are ports. TWEWY, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Hyrule Warriors, Dark Souls. While its great these games are coming, I feel there is a danger in Nintendo focusing on too many ports for the Switch. I get it, nobody owned a Wii U and the Switch isn't backwards compatible. But I fear the Switch might start developing a reputation of being a port house, dominated by recycled content from other consoles. While ports are fine and dandy, they're not what the Switch should be known for. Nintendo should be prioritizing new games built for the console, both from their stable of characters, and fresh, out-of-the-box ideas that can only be possible on the Switch. Third parties same thing, port all you want, but make stuff built from the ground up for the console too.

Say what you want about 1-2 Switch, its a kind of game Nintendo should be focusing on, using the Switch hardware to create inventive and off-beat new ideas. Along with games like Odyssey and BotW. Along with games like Odyssey and BotW. I just feel Nintendo is missing out by having such unique technology, only to waste time with just Wii U ports. Don't get me wrong, Wii U ports are fine, but they shouldn't be the primary focus.

No, but I think all these hot take threads are too much though.

I was heavily invested in the Wii U and gathered a collection of nearly sixty games. I played the heck out of most first-party games and feel satisfied leaving it at that. I know that the Wii U wasn't very popular, but it had some fantastic games, so if porting those games to the Switch means that more people will be able to enjoy them, then I'm all for it. The more the merrier!

If there was one console that deserves the ports it's the Switch, more games in the hands of more people is a good thing.

Very much so, but that was to be expected. The WiiU was a complete failure on the market, so of course they're gonna re-release everything. Also the third parties that were completely absent on WiiU are back full force now that there's money to be made on the Switch, so what's easier than to re-release those gsmes and tap into the Nintendo market? It sucks for people like me who've already played it all, but as I said, it was fully expected to happen and it did. New games take time and only now are publishers willing to commit.
