Same. My living area is small for 65'' screens and for 55'' the increase in local dimming zones isn't as big. I'll stick with the 605 for a few few more years :)
Yep. Good enough for me. I upgraded from 720p 32 inch in my room to a 4k 55 inch TCL P605. The upgrade was immense for me.

After weeks of deliberation, research, and asking people, I decided to jump in.

Well, looks like I'm getting the P605 this Friday. I've seen this recommended by seemingly everyone and their grandmother for the past half year or so, and it's only $20 more than the Vizio 50" M Series (normally same price but Vizio is on sale at Best Buy for 579) I was set on.

Upgrading from a Samsung LED 43" from 2012, this is probably going to blow me away.

Don't have the X1X or PS4 Pro yet, but I've got a X1S so I can at least watch 4K blu rays. The HDMI cable that came with the X1S should work for 4K, correct?

Just looked up my current TV purchase info on Best Buy's website because I honestly already forgot what I bought back in 2015.

Looks like I'm currently using a 40" TV and it already seems almost too big. I wonder if a 55" would overwhelm the room.

this tv is my first experience with hdr and it is... disappointing. everything i've tried looks worse with hdr. it's not the settings. it just looks so washed out and lifeless to me. i've played several different games on ps4 (desinty, horizon, battlefront II) and watched different 4k/hdr videos, and everything just looks very washed out and lifeless compared to sdr. i'm considering trading it for an mu6300, since that's cheaper, and at least then i won't have to feel bad about not using the hdr.

Don't own Destiny 2 anymore but wasn't HDR broken on the Pro when the expansion launched?

Seems like Battlefront has issues too?

https://answers.ea.com/t5/Bug-Reports/Battlefront-2-hdr-bug-ps4-pro/td-p/6423554

Not sure what you're seeing in Horizon as people seem to praise that game. In regards to HDR videos..what are you actually watching. All the HDR videos on Youtbue on The HDR Channel look good on this set to me. Maybe its just another instance of heightened expectations. This is still considered a budget TV albeit closer to mid-range specs. Also not that much has wowed me in terms of streaming content on Netflix/Amazon. Maybe some parts in Stranger Things S2 where the highlights were really nice. But a lot of content just seems to just get darker. Which is kind of the opposite of you saying things look washed out for you.

TL;DR So yeah...your experience may change drastically depending on what you're viewing.

The only thing I can tell you is to keep messing around with the calibration until you find a setting you like. I've been playing AC Origins on this TV and it looks great with HDR.

Try switching the presents to hdr light using the phone app. I switched to the mu6300 because quality issues with the p605 and I scored the mu6300 for half the price of the p605. I know the p605 is better but to me it wasn't worth double the price.

Just curious, what are your settings in SDR? Mainly the picture mode and the color setting (IE normal, warm, sports).

If you are used to the cool color settings, which generally makes colors look really "bright/pop" but they aren't accurate , this can be a reason.

It's what most tv makers put tv's on in the showrooms and out of the box, because it makes everything overly bright and colorful, but at the expense of being accurate and lower detial.

i've tried all the setting that RTings and everyone else recommend, and i've messed with it plenty. the best i've gotten it to look is with hdr dark, gamma at 2.0, and warm. it's not anything with the settings. it just looks worse to me. even at it's best, the colors look much more dull to me, especially on destiny and horizon.

also, does anyone know why MKV files being watched via usb aren't playing sound? video plays, but no sound. mp4s work fine.

Are you running through an A/V receiver? Are you watching through your pc>tv? Because all of the "chains" you go through before getting to the tv can affect the video quality and the settings you use for each of them.

Also, going just through the tv's built in youtube app, try watching this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RIDhA9c8qw

If it looks "dull/washed out" then there's something wrong somewhere.

nope, that looks great. a little dim with local dimming on, but it looks good. i put a couple other similar videos on a usb drive, and they all look pretty good. it's just the ps4 games that look faded.

Every now and again I will have to go back to the 'Home" screen on the TV itself and then go back to the source input (Xbox One X and PC in my case) to get HDR working (I immediately notice it's not working due to the "washed" out picture you are describing). You may want to give that a shot as basic as it sounds. It definitely shouldn't looked washed out if working/set up correctly.

A few details about the new 6 Series from thewirecutter.com:

The 2018 6-Series TV has more dimming zones (96 for the 55-inch version, up from 72 in last year's model, and 120 for the 65-inch version) and gets 25 percent brighter; these differences should make for better HDR and improved contrast ratios. It also offers an additional HDR mode designed for use in brighter rooms. This mode is helpful, since as wonderful as HDR can look, many people find it too dim during daytime viewing.

So depending on what measurements you reference for the 2017 model. It sounds like 750-900 nits?

So one of the things about this set is that the screen seems to dim a lot in very dark scenes. This is mentioned in the Rtings review and also this comment:

The P607 is much better at handling HDR content than the KU6300. The P607 is overall a much brighter TV, and also has a wider color gamut and a better color gradient, all aspects that have an impact on the display quality of HDR content. The 2% peak brightness is unfortunately low due to full screen dimming when displaying very dark scenes, but the KU6300 is not any better in that regard, and dims proportionally even more than the P607 for the 2% window. Scenes this dark are rare in real content, and the TCL P607's real scene peak brightness is very good. Overall, the P607 is noticeably better than the Samsung KU6300 for HDR content.

Is this behavior that could be changed via firmware or just a limitation of the hardware?

Has anyone else noticed the FALD seeming a bit slow after this latest update? Like when watching a movie or something in HDR when a scene goes from bright to dark, the fald will take a little while to "kick in" and it is quite noticeable and a bit distracting.

okay kind of a potentially stupid update, but what mode are you guys using for sdr content (particularly video games)? movie, or normal? i had been using normal because that gave me the look most similar to the tv i was coming from (3-4 year old samsung 1080p). i was using the regular recommended settings that everyone uses, but i was using normal. this was the setting that i though HDR games look washed out compared to. i tried movie mode with all the recommended settings, and the HDR stuff no longer looks washed out compared to that.

so, are people using movie mode for all SDR stuff. did i just think HDR looked pale because of the very saturated look of standard? i'm kind of confused, because i used pretty basic settings on my old samsung, and the standard mode on this tv looked just like that.

Yes movie mode for all... Other option is warm in another mode , it helps... But yes HDR looks substantially better in warm or movie mode

Here are the settings I'm using. I used to use normal for color temperature but it only took a few hours to get used to warm and everything looks a lot better now. Movie + warm produced the most accurate picture in all my testing.

Picture mode: movie
TV brightness: normal for SD, brightest for HDR
Picture size: auto
Local contrast: high
Backlight: 20 for SDR, 100 for HDR
Brightness: 50
Contrast: 100
Sharpness: 0
Color: 45
Tint: 0
Color temperature: warm

Under 'Expert picture settings' in the smartphone Roku app I have noise reduction turned off and gamma around 2.2.

please do. I like the saturated look of normal, but it seems too jarring to switch between that for sdr and the more realistic look of hdr
I actually turned down the colors in SDR because I felt they were too saturated. I'm not sure if you said you were on PS4 Pro or XB1X but did you manually change the HDMI input to 2.0 in the TV settings? I left mine on auto and couldn't get my XB1X to recognize it as an HDR TV.

Got this TV today. So far I'm loving it!

Bought IT to try out a 4K blu ray with my X1S and went with rtings settings (with a few minor personal adjustments), it looks outstanding.

For SDR...

TV brightness - Normal
Picture Mode - Movie
Picture Size - Direct
Local Contrast - High
Backlight - 40
Brightness - 50
Contrast - 100
Sharpness - 7
Color - 47
Tint - -1
Color temperature - Warm
Game Mode - On

For HDR...

TV brightness - Normal (have tried different settings including the "Brightest" but I prefer Normal)
Picture Mode - Dark HDR
Picture Size - Direct
Local Contrast - High
Backlight - 100
Brightness - 50
Contrast - 100
Sharpness - 0
Color - 47
Tint - -1
Color temperature - Warm
Game Mode - On

Gamma is set to 2.0 for both SDR and HDR

...the general rule of thumb is that no one set of settings is going to be accurate for multiple TVs.

Same here. I wavered for awhile between liking a little sharpness (in games) or 0 sharpness for video but I got tired of adjusting and just leave at 0 now.

Was going to wait, but got this a couple days back because some guy on OfferUp agreed to buy my old tv at the full price of this one. Absolutely in love with it. Really insane what I'm seeing for the money. If the 6 series is legit, I'll go 65 and move this one to the room.

Works for me. The little HDR symbol pops up as well.

i'm happy with this tv, but i had to exchange it. for the most part, the uniformity looked like everyone else's that i've seen, but there was one dark spot RIGHT in the middle of the screen that i couldn't ignore. hopefully this new one is better. i also had an issue with the settings button on the remote not working. the light on the tv would blink, but the settings wouldn't open.

It seems like the 2018 5-series (the equivalent to 2017 S-series) will have a wide color gamut, HDR10 and Dolby Vision, but no local dimming zones sadly. Still getting a low input lag, 4k HDR TV with a wide color gamut for $350~ is crazy.
The 5-Series will be available in sizes ranging from 43 inches to 65 inches, and will feature the HDR Performance Package, which includes HDR Dynamic Contrast and HDR Pro Gamma control (no Contrast Control Zone lighting, though). The 55-inch and 65-inch 5-series models are also outfitted with 240 Natural Motion Technology for smooth action and onscreen movement.

Both the 5-Series and 6-Series have Wide Color Gamut with NBP Photon technology, three HDMI 2.0a ports with HDCP 2.2, and high-speed 802.11ac wireless and Ethernet networking options. Both lines will go on sale this spring. TCL hasn't released any pricing information, but we're willing to bet that the prices will be excellent.

I like it that way, to be honest. I didn't like how soft the image looked at the default setting.

I tried adding sharpness but in finely patterned or crosshatch patterned objects (most of the time clothes), the extra sharpness makes those patterns shimmer and crawl when there's movement. It's super distracting. And that was only when I bumped sharpness to about 30, 60 i can only imagine how harsh the edge enhancement and fringing would be lol. But hey if it looks good to you that's all that matters in the end.

I'm sure if a professional calibrated it for me, I'd tone it down but I don't really know any better xD

Every video I watch of AC Origins in 4k running on an X looks better than what I'm seeing when I play it. Not sure why but no games are looking great to me on this tv. I'm noticing a huge difference when watching 4k hdr videos on youtube compared to games.

Calibrating for HDR games is a bitch. Not every game looks great on the same setting. I'm finding this out the hard way with Horizon. After an hour or so of calibration, I've settled on a Brighter setting with Bright lighting and colors because I'm not gaming in a pitch black environment, there's plenty of light there so the Dark presets were extremely dark and dull.

Even then, to me the HDR "advantages" are coming in the form of how subtle and more naturalistic the colors look, not with them popping out a lot more.

Even then, to me the HDR "advantages" are coming in the form of how subtle and more naturalistic the colors look, not with them popping out a lot more.
It's weird bc HZD looks great on the same settings that I have my xbox on. It has me questioning if it's my X bc nothing looks great. The colors all look washed out.

I have PS4 Pro and XB1X, I haven't had any issues with HDR on any games looking worse, they are all either subtly better or drastically better. But none worse or washed out. With the exception of Star Wars: BF2. During gameplay, the HDR is fine, but the cut scenes were not converted correctly for HDR mode so it resulted in out of wack gamma. I was only playing during the EA Access trial though a couple months ago when the X patch first came out for it so I dunno if it's since been fixed with a patch.

So if double check to make sure your settings are correct.

I'll tell you what though, HDR in games is all over the place and not consistent in anyway. Game developers still figuring out how to implement it and it's been kinda funny and sad early on.

HDR in streaming and UHD discs though has been awesome.

Edit: what are your settings anyways?
