I really wish the option for original graphics had been implemented in the Perfect Dark XBLA port because while I can let most of the aesthetic changes slide, I can't reconcile how they butchered Joanna's face.

It's crazy that the multiplayer in Goldeneye was essentially an afterthought by a few of the developers who, and wasn't planned to be in the main game.

So bizarre that there isn't an option. It would have been perfect.

They most likely couldn't do it for legal reasons, one of the original face models was Shigeru Miyamoto, for one.

I wish they would re-do the PD XBLA port. They messed up so much stuff in it. As OP points out, they forgot the game's original control scheme. And then when they added them back in, it was glitched. So many other problems too. There was a whole community on Xbox.com but the online implementation pretty much killed off the community within a month of playing. It was hard to even specifically play with other people, and the playlists didn't even work right.

However, I have a hunch the slowdown from running through explosions is inherent to the game's physics engine. Since explosions/bullets have physics impulses in Perfect Dark, the game is trying to calculate moving the player, and since Perfect Dark is likely still a a big single update loop, it still makes the game hitch as it tries to calculate how to move the player (while the player is able to move against the physics impulse). And it probably spawns a lot of explosion entities as well.

You can also tell they did not touch the physics engine as they don't even attempt to sync physics objects in online, so when you're playing multiplayer over the internet, you can't move ammo boxes with explosions/bullets and the hovercrates are locked in place on the maps that have them.

The weird thing is Rare's pre-release screenshots heavily hinted at a graphics change option, because all the comparison screenshots were perfect before-and-afters. Must have been intended but dropped at some point.

Yeah, I forgot about this. I can forgive it if including it was going to affect the rest of the netcode, which turned out pretty smooth (in deathmatch, at least - co-op/counter-op are lagfests).

Yeah, that one is honestly the decision they had to make. It would have required the lockstep networking of the co-op mode to make physics sync (as they obviously do in co-op) without basically porting PD to a whole new engine because there's no way in hell any part of PD's physics was deterministic since they only had to worry about running on a single N64, and that would have made it impossible to have 8 players online. For what it's worth at least the netcode of multiplayer never had any issues for me. It's just a shame the actual feature set was so stripped away.

Also, a while back, I recorded almost all of the reload animations in PDXBLA:

For the sake of bumping this underrated thread and to share something that I thought fans of these games might find interesting, I highly recommend this YouTube channel that goes by the name of graslu00. This channel has walkthroughs of Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on emulator, and this player in particular might just be one of the most impressive GE/PD players I've ever seen. The videos are just interesting to watch.

https://m.youtube.com/user/Graslu00

He also has walkthroughs of The World Is Not Enough for N64 and Nightfire. While these two technically aren't Rareware shooters (they're made by Eurocom), they emulate the Rareware style FPS design template more than most other shooters do, and are great games in their own right.

He also has a Goldeneye walkthrough with actual N64 capture, so it's not all just emulation.

The Xbox 360 emulator Xenia has been making slow progress. Recently it's made some pretty substantial improvements to its Vulkan renderer, meaning that Perfect Dark runs at full speed but with (relatively) minor graphics issues and some physics hiccups.

Until recently the Vulkan backend lagged dramatically behind the much slower OpenGL one in terms of accuracy.

It's such a pity Rare Replay was released before Play Anywhere was a thing.

Just found a very interesting video from November where David Doak (one of the original developers) talks about the development of Goldeneye. Very fascinating watch. Even includes old photos from inside of Rare's HQ from back during those days! Pretty crazy to see as Rare was such a secretive company back in the day. Very cool to see this kind of stuff.

Yeah, I already had this in the OP. But thanks for bringing it up again, it's great stuff. :-)

For those unaware, both games still have a very active speedrunning community - The Elite. I believe it may be the oldest speedrunning community online?

Both games are masterpieces that defined my childhood in many ways. I'm really hoping that Microsoft and Nintendo's recent collaboration through cross-play means there's a chance we could finally get Goldeneye HD.

If anyone wants a co-op buddy for either perfect dark game please add me, MajorBritten.

With the release of Sea of Theives coming up Ive been playing a lot of Rare Replay and just started playing these. I really hope the rumors are true and theres a new Perfect Dark in development, series had so much potential.

I love me some GoldenEye and Perfect Dark! A few summers ago, I was having issues getting 4 player splitscreen to work using various emulators and such, so I ended up porting a bunch of levels over as a mod to Serious Sam 3, since it was the only PC FPS with 4 player splitscreen that wasn't a headache to setup (and I was too impatient to start from scratch in UE4 or something like it). It seems a bit overboard, as I had no idea what I was doing at first, but I managed to get a ton of levels ported over, and they all play pretty well.

Obviously some things like weapons and items are just the regular Serious Sam stuff (although I did mostly successfully get weapon models from GE ported as well, but I never released it as I had issues I couldn't fix). I had plans to update it and add more stuff, but it didn't seem to hold too many peoples' interest, and I was trying my hand at other stuff, and then my grandfather passed away, so I never got back to it.

However, if anybody wants to check them out, you can find the mod in the Serious Sam 3 workshop, here.

Last night, I decided to mess around in Goldeneye and I played through some levels on the 00 Agent difficulty using the Gold PP7 just for fun. I was playing the second bunker level and I actually died despite having a one-hit kill gun! Granted, it was mostly because one of the cameras saw me and triggered the alarm, so I got screwed over. Apparently the game can still kick your ass even with the Gold PP7!

Because of this, I'm planning on playing through the game on 00 Agent with the Gold PP7 just to see how easy or hard the game would be even with such a gun at your disposal. Should be fun. :p

Edit: Oh wow, didn't know this thread was now in the hangouts section. I was so confused when I didn't see it bumped in the official video games section haha!

Goldeneye! So many good memories. Not sure what the secret ingredient of that game was but no other multiplayer game came close to it back then. The single player was lots of fun too.

What staff would MS need on board for y'all to be assured that a Perfect Dark sequel would succeed?

A fair number of the original PD staff worked on PDZ, so I don't think the staff matters much (Grant Kirkhope aside). What really matters is staying faithful to the tone of the original game - no rebooting, reimagining, etc., just stick with what worked the first time and build on it (which is pretty much what PD did in relation to GE).

You guys know what's a fun challenge you can create for yourself in PD? Turn on the enemy rockets cheat. It makes it so that the enemies all carry rocket launchers and it makes the levels soooooooo much harder to play through.

Seriously. Just try it on Agent. The game will kick your ass. I'm scared to even think how it's like on the higher difficulties lol. Levels like dataDyne Extraction are almost impossible because Dr. Caroll can die so easily from the rockets. Somehow I managed to beat Chicago with this cheat last night haha! Area 51 Rescue and Villa are also fun levels to try this with. They're quite tough. I didn't manage to beat them with the amount of time that I had.

Does Goldeneye have this cheat? For some reason, I could've sworn it did, but it wasn't on my cheats list. Maybe I didn't unlock it yet? Really wish it had this cheat as well.

I'm surprised that I failed to mention GoldenEye: Decoded. It's a treasure trove of magazine scans, uncompressed assets, design documents, promotional materials, etc.
