this post was a mess.
the servers are down now, so the download for the patch started (13,6 GB for me on steam)

Is the AE patch live already to download, or is AE only available for physical copies before server maintenance?

Edit: nvm, answered just above lol

Yeah, the double special does concern me a little, and I'm worried if play Chun I'll just stick to instant specials while completely forgetting about SBK and Hikoken (plus, I can't do Instant Air Legs to save my damn life. Took me forever to do her season 2 trials.)

The "charging during moves" is the part I always have the hardest time wrapping my head around. Like, I get you can do that forward kick of his and use the move properties to hold back....but I ALWAYS forget about it and start charging backwards/down too late. Maybe that's just one of those things that you have to practice enough to make a habit.

Is Turtling an effective way to learn a charge character? I feel like it would just teach me bad habits to fall back on (and never teach me how to "hide" inputs in my other moves).

Honestly, me too. I just wrote what came to mind first instead of doing an exhaustive list. The more I think about it, the more I want to learn Guile ... just based on look mind you. Not too pretty (Chun), not too much of a bastard (Bison), just the right amount of hair. Plus, I already have his SFII stage.

So...uh... any good resources for learning (general) charge characters or (specific) Guile? I'm not talking super combo videos here, just the basic basic crap (ex. "you can charge during these moves", "this is your beginner strategy", "just hold down/back you idiot", etc..)

Try this:

Managed to beat Hard Survival finally just before maintenance. I only had one character's trials left (Guile), but I didn't think I'd be able to finish it in time, so I didn't bother. Then, with like ten minutes left, I decided to give it a go and I missed doing it before maintenance by one!

Damn you trial 7!

AE hype!

Does anyone remember when capcom said their would never be an "ultra" edition for SV5. What ever happened to that
That meant you don't have to buy a whole new game for the new content you can just get the seasons content on your existing game and be fully up to date on content which is as far as I know what is still happening and they have stuck to their word there.

I ask because I really only started playing fighting games (despite Smash) with SFV, but didn't people always need to buy (or at least upgrade) the new editions for SFIV? With SFV:AE, it's just a patch for some.

What he meant by that is not having a version that every users need to purchase like with IV, he held up his promise considering AE is free for owners of V and those who don't own it yet get a sweet package for a solid price.

Capcom probably gave a 21GB warning because you might need that much free to install the update. Though that's kinda weird because PS4 requires doubled space for everything (being 28GB in this case) and iirc Steam does gradual installs that use minimal extra space.

You don't have to buy another disc once you've bought the game. You get updated to the latest version through a patch. People who bought sf4 had to buy ssf4 because there was no upgrade path built-in to the vanilla game. Even still users were also segregated from each other based on what version you had. People who had the latest version of SF4 could play everyone while people who weren't could only play people with their version or an older version. All balance and feature updates are given to all owners of SFV free so no more player base splitting.

Perhaps it's because of that weird story mode you could also download separately?

There's semantics involved here, but basically, they said they won't rerelease an updated version you have to buy, like SF4 did. AE is technically a combination of free update for everyone and special season 1+2 bundle for newcomers, not expansion, like Super/Ultra Street Fighter 4 were.

I'm hearing you can play AE offline when the patch is downloaded. Which actually makes sense but I got confused because you can't get the new characters until servers go live again.

Although I wouldn't recommend doing anything other than training mode because you won't get the EXP for it.

Does anyone know if it finally shows the hours played as a statistic on the PS4? I still can't believe that was missing after almost all Capcom games include a playtime counter.

I'm not sure if we can get XP at all in Arcade mode.

Speaking on downtime, I would be interested in knowing the technical reasons for the maintenance time taking so long. What are they doing, exactly?

Also patch sizes are weird as fuck on PSN sometimes. I remember for certain patches some people would have larger downloads for no real reason.

They said you'd never need another disk - and this is true. If you picked up SF5 at launch two years ago, this update is free for you to download and the additional DLC is exactly the sort of thing they promised prior to launch. All the new modes and AE content is free, while the new characters are DLC as has been clear for years.

"We have paid attention to the way that we've managed things with SF4, and we will be mixing things up this time around. This is the only disc you're ever going to need to own to get all of the content in the game, but we'll be revealing details of how our post-launch content happens at a later date, but it will be good news." - SF5's Producer
