Yes, no shit. I'm talking about how the art style used in New Donk City doesn't actually look at all what classic Donkey Kong looked like, so your argument doesn't make sense.

Being passive aggressive about it is just childish at this point.
I'm saying the fact that the team implemented wild changes in art style between Kingdoms on purpose is as fuckin obvious as the fact that New Donk City is based on the city in Donkey Kong.

But again, I don't think "no shit" is appropriate, unless you can point me to an official interview where Nintendo said that's what it's based on? Otherwise you have no argument.

I've always assumed Wrecking Crew and Donkey Kong existed in the same city, since Wrecking Crew feels kind of like a DK side game, and this is what the city from Wrecking Crew looks like in HD
maxresdefault.jpg

It pretty much looks identical to New Donk City.

So you go from being passive aggressive to straight up aggressive.

Calm down, bud.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the simple red metal construction beams band simple ladders of the original game haven't been expanded to a more realized 3D universe yet.

The red construction beams are abundant in New Donk, and it's really up to Nintendo how to design that setting in 3D beyond that.

I enjoyed the game myself just wish it was longer story wise (not talking about finishing the game and going back to get the rest of the moons). Then again Mario games aren't known for there length but it would of been great it was a bit longer.

Now you're pretending to start arguments where there wasn't one. Who the hell challenged whether or not New Donk City was based on Donkey Kong? What are you even talking about anymore?

Seriously, calm down. You're working yourself up.
I thought we established that unless Nintendo explicitly state something, you can't have an argument? No matter how obvious something is, you can never be sure until you hear it from the horse's mouth right?

The red beams yes, but everything else, from the cars to the buildings to the people, were clearly not based on original Donkey Kong art.

Pauline's proportions are more or less directly ripped from the Donkey Kong games and everyone else follows that style. It also takes from games like Donkey Kong 94.

But again, I would never dare to suggest this was on purpose until proof presents itself. You don't know, I don't know. Only Nintendo knows.

I've roughly half the kingdoms at 100% and I've cleared the main story. That ending sequence
was AMAZING. Ahahaha holy crap I had the biggest grin on my face and I was giggling like a schoolchild. That song!!! Also Mario being a Nice Guy (TM) and getting shot down was hilarious. I really wish Peach had made more of an effort to ditch them both on the moon, but I guess that would be a little morbid for Nintendo (ignoring the fact that Mario forcibly takes over the bodies of the innocent in this game). Moral of the game: Mario's an asshole who hijacks bodies and believes the princess owes him marriage just because he did something as trivial as saving her life. I love it.

Oh boy, this thread looks like it's spiralling. Let's discuss something nice. What is everyone's favourite costume? I'm quite fond of the Bowser wedding outfit. Walking around with that shell is great.

You're doing a very good job at convincing us that you know what you're talking about by ignoring everything people say and instead calling names. Keep it up!

Because I already said my piece and don't care anymore.

But since you're gonna continue being a child, I'm gonna add you to my ignore list. I didn't come to this forum for childish behavior.

I want to talk about Mario, not respond to passive aggression all day.

Thanks for helping me weed you out!

See ya, bro.

I've been trying to talk about Donkey Kong and even pointed out the similarities to Donkey Kong 94 and you put me on your ignore list instead.

An earlier post made me think of this... which level would you want as a Smash Bros stage?

I feel like New Donk is the obvious one, and while it is great from a platforming standpoint, I don't know how I feel about it visually in the context of Smash.

Personally I'd love Luncheon or Hat, but I feel like some kind of "Odyssey" stage that goes between kingdoms is most likely. Unfortunately, I'm not the biggest fan of those traveling stages.

Personally, I love the Captain's Hat + Tuxedo, as well as the Explorer Set. There's so many good outfits though, I really need to spend some time going through them all and finding some good combinations.

A stage set at New Donk's festival would be amazing and completely different from previous Mario stages in the series.

Bowser Kingdom

Bowser has been a character in smash for 3/4 games and has yet to have a home stage. Bowser Kingdom is gorgeous and has a lot of areas for obvious arenas to battle.

Do you unlock these without the amiibo? I would really like to run around in a wedding dress.

I like the samurai and classic Mario costumes the best. The one you unlock in the first post game world is pretty amazing too.

LMAO, are you kidding me? How can you even question that that was a deliberate development decision? It's called ODYSSEY for a reason. I thought it was obvious to everyone, apparently not.

That childish passive aggression again.

I'm not entirely sure what the argument is here or why it's even an argument, but it's clearly not constructive.

BTW I just hit New Donk City, game is fantastic.

Seconding Bowser's Kingdom, for featuring an under-represented aesthetic in Smash as well as a staple Mario trope - in addition, both the Moon Kingdom + Chapel and Cap Kingdom could be visually interesting. Cloud Kingdom and Ruined Kingdom are basically built to be stages, but they don't represent the game well enough and tread too much on Kid Icarus and Fire Emblem's look.

But realistically, we'll probably get Cascade Kingdom or Peach's Castle (Odyssey)...

A stage set at New Donk's festival would be amazing and completely different from previous Mario stages in the series.

It'd have some overlap with both 75m and Wrecking Crew, but as an individual stage it would be great source material to pull from.

Ruined Kingdom would probably be the least 'Mario' stage among the Mario stages, but it'd be fantastic to see it just a little bit more, haha. Echoing the Bowser sentiments.

Now that I'm in the postgame I tend to mix and match, but if I had to choose one I'd say the Crazy Cap outfit.

I'm so glad I more-or-less went on media blackout for this game after the E3 trailer. I just got through New Donk City and it was excellent. They couldn't have put that song in a better place. Also, I don't know what the consensus is on the weird mishmash of art styles, but I love how they can just randomly cross over, like
the regular dude hanging out in the frozen desert and the T-Rex coming out of nowhere in the city
. Also, I got Super Mario World flashbacks from that point in the water kingdom where you
get a little preview of the lunch kingdom by warping there through a painting
. Just stopping by to gush about the game before getting right back into it

What do you guys think of the final costume? Seems like a weird costume because the only reason I'd think people would want it is for full playthroughs, and even then...

You do after collecting a specific amount of moons (I forget how much). Just make sure you save up enough coins for them!
That's good. Thanks.

I knew the other amiibo costumes could be purchased but didn't know if they locked the Odyssey amiibo costumes. There's already a $9,999 costume I want in the shop. I'm going to have to stop dying.

So I've been playing this game two night in a row and having a blast. The worlds are gorgeous, the small bits of character dialogue are a nice touch and the overall level design and mechanics are fantastic, but I was still waiting for the moment that would really drive home how good this game is, and I think I just had it...

I was wondering why they didn't use the proper Odyssey song anywhere until this point of the game. Figured it would be in some kind of opening cinematic or something, but the moment they saved it for was incredible. That festival in New Donk City blew my mind. Visually it was so vibrant and and colourful. The stage itself was a great throwback to DK, and of course the song itself must surely be cemented as one of the best pieces of music in video game history. It's fun, it's catchy, well composed, well performed and fits the game perfectly. I adored this moment in the game. Probably one of the best moments I've had in a game for years. Can't wait to keep playing and see what else is in store.

Sorry for gushing!

Just finished the story moons in wooded kingdom and explored. Up to about 170 moons so far and not bored of scavenging for moons or hunt for coins yet!

I don't think I have ever met someone who understands design less than the almighty tira. Like ever. You could tell a caveman "here is a game where the main character travels around the world and each location looks different" and they would be able to grasp that concept easier than what I am reading here. Like just blatant plan willful stubborn ignorance on the topic being discussed.

There is not a snowball's chance in hell that the same team that made the visually cohesive Mario Galaxy, Mario Galaxy 2, 3D Land and 3D World somehow forgot how to do their jobs and accidentally cobbled together a bunch of designs that looked vastly different without doing it on purpose, and then they somehow released this accidental scrapbook of a game in that state? That is such an insulting and asinine concept my brain almost rejects that someone could be so willfully obtuse to think it wasn't done on purpose. That is nearly beyond reason. If the team is ever interviewed I half expect the question "was this on purpose?" to never even come up because it's so fucking obvious why would anyone ever waste a question asking that.
