Do you think hate speech should be freely published? Condemnations of lgbtq on religious or pseudo-scientific grounds? What about information about suicide methods? Bomb design? Manuals about how to create drugs and use them on unsuspecting victims? What about something more on the legalese side of things, like defamation? False accusations of crime? These too are instances of censorship. We can't have this perception that prohibition of anything is an inherent misuse or abuse of power, because that's not applicable to the world we already live in and which permits our continued safety and privilege.

For a lot of these things, I don't think there's an easy answer. But either way, more than a few of them are totally legal in America. You can buy the Anarchist Cookbook on Amazon. That's likely not changing anytime soon with how much freedom of speech/expression and it's very broad interpretation is valued here.

Game is fucking digital art nothing more then some pixel . So stop identifying them like they are actual girls. We.dont thats why we wrote these.

Also stop with defence force bullshit

So with that logic raping people in a game would be fine since all it is are pixels? It still casts a harmful outlook on sexulization of underage girls.

You guys are weird.

What if the whole game is brilliant but it has one or more sexualized underage girls?
You still think any sort of censorship would fuck it up....even if its just making a child have some proper appropriate clothes.

P.S I had no idea there was a "No censorship defense force".

I don't like my games being messed with. Because it can lead to weird mish mashes like Fire Emblem Fates and Tokyo Mirage Sessions changes. Which seem arbitrary and random.

Yeah Solieil and Corrins romance was made better, but it also cost Rhajat her entire unique same sex romance.

In Ireland books and film were censored rabidly by the Catholic state that emerged after independence.

Censorship by government, corporations, special interest groups, anyone; is am inherent evil.

I would never support it in any way shape or form.

Everything can live and die by itself.

Representation in any media codifies values that can have negative impact in irl people in tons of different ways.

Just the actual state of being art means that it communicates, no piece of art is just itself or the media it sits on. All art is interactive and requires input from both the art and the spectator, and it's the mix of both that results in the experience that the spectator carries with themselves afterwards. And it is carried, and it can be positive, and it can be negative.

I think there's a censorship scene in South Park: Stick of Truth that blocks the anal probe scene and makes fun of Australian(?) censorship. I think it ended up being funnier than the actual joke itself.

I really dislike the censorship talk in these kinds of threads because it really muddies any and all conversations about localization and the process behind it and why changes are made. And instead of thoughtful discussion about localization, it's disingenuous arguments that play into the hands of those who are absolutists and those awful people who group up on developers and publishers for minor changes and spreading further ignorance to those who don't understand the localization process.

Very, very, very similar to how people call devs lazy. Just spreading further ignorance about the process and what goes into it.

There is a difference between "this should be illegal" and "This should be frowned upon and discouraged from society".

Fanservice on underaged characters. If they aren't mature by the standards of every country you plan to sell the game in it shouldn't be there.

is raping in movies are not fine? it is and it will always be since it is part of the life.

Well jeez quoting you again, but again, what the fuck.
When is rape in film, often for story purposes, not treated like a terrible thing? That shit only gets thrown into R-rated media too, so I'd hope impressionable kids wouldn't be watching that to begin with because it snuck passed a ratings board.

Irreversible is not designed to give young boys boners like underaged anime girls oft are. Unless you disagree? surely you can see how the two are not in any way equivalent, unless you're talking about those demented games that portray rape as a reward.

"its a part of life" almost sounds like you believe anything goes

So you should skip the vast majority of games then.

"Censorship" in games, as the terms happens the be used in this thread, happens all the time in the industry. Last minute changes to game content right before release is common and standard.
I'm not quite sure what do you mean. I guess you mean games get censored before release, but everyone just doesn't know that because no "uncensored" version exist for public? Not sure this thread is about that.

This tread actually reminds me of two characters in Fire Emblem Awakening that I wished were censored;

Nowi

and

Ricken.

Both should have been removed from the game as I just felt so uncomfortable especially with Nowi and no I don't buy Nintendo bullshit excuse that she's a 1000 years dragon as they knew what they were doing.

The other problem I have with them is that both characters are clearly young children and yet you can get them both married off to adults, this bothered me a lot that once I got them, I just put them in the barrack and never bothered to use them.

Maybe a compromise could be putting all languages on all editions of the game. So the japanese game would include the english translation as well as the japanese original. And people who want to play the non localized version could still do it importing the japanese version (without having to learn japanese first, let's be realistic).

Also, some people mentioned TMS as an example. Localization did not a lot of good for that game sales. It managed to piss the fanbase and people that would not be interested in a non localized version were still not interested. So maybe that localization money could have had better uses.

Is that Smash example really "censorship"? Wouldn't it just be considered a redesign for a different game?

Agreed.
It's certainly that being that the only characters that show skin in that area got covered up. Corrin is one, the other is Bayonetta. Corrin's original outfit is essentially underwear, and Bayonetta in her original game is even more revealing. They make sure to make it look like shorts.

This Tharja trophy was removed from the 3DS that showed skin in that area.

User warned: do not post untagged NSFW images. ESPECIALLY NOT images featuring underage-looking characters.

TMS is a special case where both the localization/self-censoring as well as the original version went too far in either direction. Ultimately, it looks silly and dumb either way but I prefer the one that that makes me shake my head in amusement and not disgust.

I mean yeah, that's the stance I hold. Rape games exist. I would never play one or want them to be anything but extremely niche products that should never even be on the radar of the mainstream, but they ultimately are just pixels.

Nothing is just pixels. Media can and do influence society, even if it doesn't personally to you.

People endorsing sexualization of minors. Putting censorship in the title brings the crazies out I guess.

Definitely want that stuff censored for sure. Everything else usually would fall more under localization than censorship.

This is true. I am mostly under the impression that posters just have not considered the extent of what censorship can affect and consider it with a strong moral evaluation that is precocious and ill-fitted to this discussion.

And, guilty me, it irks me to see people codify certain ideals as progressive that i don't consider progressive and so i must be the contrarian.

That's not censorship, but I get where you're coming from.

I want what was originally created and put out for the public. That exact thing.
I originally wanted to say that I trust the creator to make or allow alterations, but after what Lucas did with Star Wars I don't anymore. I don't want alterations of any kind by anyone ever.
