Does anyone have any experience with the cheaper S405 model? I can get one practically brand new for $250. I know the P has a brighter screen but I'll be using it mostly for 4k gaming and the room I play in is not that well lit, which rtings says is where the weaker HDR really struggles is in bright rooms.

But if the HDR is really weak I'll just wait on new models of the P I guess.

I have one in my bedroom. In a dark room it looks great, but not so much in a bright room. I personally love it.

CrazyIvan, does your receiver do HDR as well? I have to upgrade mine. The one I have now does 4K, but not HDR, so I'm eying that Onkyo TXNR676. On sale right now too.

Unfortunately, it does not do HDR either. It's an older receiver. I plan on upgrading at some point later this year, but in the meantime I have to figure out the sound issue first.

Is the TV on the first page here, the one that includes the head phone jack on the controller and that you can speak to the controller? I would prefer that.

Is there perhaps a better tlc TV now since the making of this thread?

Thanks.

So I'm at a loss regarding gamma after watching the recent RTings calibration YT video. In the old online guide they recommend a gamma setting of 2.2, and in the YT guide they claim that oddly enough, 2.0 is "more accurate". This comes at a time when I find a lot of people on AVSforum prefer the 2.4 setting as it produces deeper blacks.

Just curious to see what other people's experiences were.

Anybody here who owns this TV have an Xbox One X? I'm having an issue where the colors get screwy and overly dark once I exit out of a game that uses HDR.

I was playing Witcher 3 and Forza Horizon 3 and when I hit the home button to exit out, everything on the dashboard looked extremely dark. The only way I could fix it is to relaunch a game or put the system to sleep and wake it up.

I have no problem with this on my PS4 Pro or any Roku channels that use HDR. Is this a Xbox One X bug or a TV bug?

I have had this bug before. It isn't every time but yeah sometimes it is like the main menu is really dark with high contrast. I am not sure if this is an Xbox issue (I'm also in preview) or if this is a TV issue.

Glad I'm not the only one. Seeing as I have no issues with any other device, I'm betting this is an Xbox One X bug.

I the 49 inch - it's totally serviceable in a dark/low light room.
I really have no complaints with mine, especially considering the low cost of the TV.
I did calibrate it pretty heavily though

A quick fix for this issue is to actually go to the TCL TV "Home" screen and then back to your Xbox input.

Crap had this TV about 4 months now all of a sudden this morning I wake up to a flashing white status light and the red TCL splash screen and it will not go to a picture or to the home page any ideas ?

i pulled the plug and still restarting to red tcl splash screen and not loading

edit..

don't know if it was an update that brick the firmware on Roku or what? but after talking with customer service they had me unplug the TV from the surge protector plug it directly into the wall and reset the TV from the side input reset button holding it down for 15 seconds. at first it didnt work but after unpluggin my Astro mixamp from the usb port, a rest brought it back to factory default

Wi might have been the Astro optical out headset plugged into the USB for power might have been drawing too much power so I unplugged that as well
plugged the astro into my xbox x

all good now

Did anything change from their article settings?

Yeah, a couple of settings:
  • Inputs: Change your PC HDMI Input to Computer to get 4:4:4 Chroma option in your graphics card settings.
  • TV Brightness: Brighter instead of Darker. I guess change to Darker during night time, and Brighter during day time.
  • Backlight: Change it according to your rooms light setting, but keep it 100 for HDR content. In the video, it was at 4.
  • Contrast: It is changed to 95 from 100.
  • Gamma: It was changed to 2.0 instead of the standard 2.2 because it is closer to what movies shoot for (So it might be 2.2 for you, and 2.0 for them).
Besides the ones I listed above, everything remains the same.

I'm not too sure if anyone here has experienced any of the following while watching HDR/Dolby Digital Content. When certain scenes are too dark I noticed that there are various white/off-white flashes, like the dark black areas are trying to automatically adjust. I googled it and the closest thing that I found is something called " clouding". At times, if there is only visible text, I do get some extra white shine coming from the text that is very visible. Anyone have any fixes for this?

So I'm testing the new RTings settings from the recent Youtube video. Regarding SDR settings, are people really keeping their backlight that low (4)?

Its a good budget TV, but where HDR is concerned it lacks the color depth needed for that to really pop. It will say its running HDR, but your eyes won't really be getting it. Get a p605/607 for a little more and a lot better quality, or wait for the 2018 models- maybe you can get a 2017 model for highway robbery price when that happens. Its an awesome tv and HDR looks great on it.

Anybody playing Shadow of the Colossus on this? I saw some people talking about how there are a lot of grey areas that highlight poor uniformity, so I'm wondering if this TV might not be so great for this game.

I think this is about right for me too actually (ended up setting it to 38 last night). I went back and read RTings recommendations for general backlight settings and they claimed that it obviously depends on the lighting conditions. They also said it was one of the least impactful settings to image quality and it wouldn't make contrast any worse either way.

Yeah, for SDR. they make it sound like HDR needs it at max.

Exactly. The backlight at 4 was just way too dim in my living room. I'll probably see how 38 feels but that's definitely in the right ballpark.

Also, holy lord does Altered Carbon look amazing in Dolby Vision on this TV. It may be one of the best reference pieces I've seen. Even the wife could tell! Gamma at 2.0 definitely improves the previously dim Dolby Vision mode when set at normal.

Just be flexible with the backlight for HDR. I usually adjust it depending on time of day and whatnot.

I'm trying to hold off on buying this thing because I know the new models are right around the corner, but it's tough.

My friend just got this. He has a 750ti in his comp. And the TV looks great in HDMI 1.4 mode But anytime we put it in HDMI 2.0 in order to enable HDR it looks really washed out. Is that a cable issue or Video Card issue? I'm not sure the HDR in Windows 10 turns on because I dont see the HDR logo come on.

Yes. I think HDR only works when you set it to HDMI 2.0 But it looks washed out. And then we try to set it to 60hz but it only works in 30hz. But it looks all washed out. And it wont let us set it to RGB 10 bit and HDR wont work.

I'm guessing the 750ti doesn't actually support HDMI 2.0 spec needed to get 4K, HDR, 60hz. It sounds like your outputs are limited to HDMI 1.4 specs so putting the TV in 2.0 mode won't help. 750ti supports 4K/60hz but using Displayport, not HDMI.

I'm gonna pick this up this weekend I think. It's going to be hooked up to PS4 Pro, do I need another sort of HDMI cable? I'm a bit confused whether or not I need a certain cable that enables 4K/HDR?

Also, is the setup pretty easy? I was never one to tinker with picture settings on TVs, but since this is my first 4K/HDR tv I want to attempt to maximize the quality. Regardless, it's going to be a huge step up from my old 46" RCA LCD tv

The cable that comes with the PS4 Pro can do 4K HDR. Older HDMI cables can't, so make sure that you're using the right one.

Setup can take a little while. You'll probably find yourself fiddling with the colors and brightness settings at first, but you only really need to do this once.

edit: never mind, I think I bought all of my HDMI cables later than 2009 so I shouldn't be impacted by my cables

So what settings is everyone using for playing the Nintendo Switch? I'm using the new Rtings settings from their latest video, and things seem a bit washed out (Playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2)
