I feel like people are just randomly naming games at this point. I could pick basically every hyped and successful PC game made over 5 years ago and say, "It's now completely forgotten" and it would fit with the choices in this thread.

Anyone remember Heardy Gerdy on the PS2?

Edge Magazine went nuts over it, massive previews and... Very average game and no one ever speaks about it now.

The first 3D game of Bullfrog, after the marvelous Populous, Syndicate and Theme Park.

Sony push hard this game (the first of Kazunori Yamaushi ) in the launch window of Playstation.

The Sonic of the launch of Saturn.

The sequel of the Cruin's Usa, projected to be the Ridge Racer/Daytona USA of Nintendo 64.

The weird thing is that all of those games are superb.

Somebody forgot me?

Well.......yes

The Resident Evil Killer"

Especially hyped for the launch of the Dreamcast.

It actually sold decent enough, but that's because it was a launch title and it was expected.

Man, this game is just terrible. All we remember is the out of place Christmas music.

I ended up trading the game back to the stores.

ha, yeah, Ive played hell of this game, mainly because i bought it with my DC. It is not that terrible and was fun enough to finish it, but definitely not comparable to games like Code Veronica that got released a bit later.

Hyped and forgotten, this would totally be PSO2's fate if it was ever brought to the west. No wonder SEGA canceled...err... "delayed" it.

Spore. Spore spore spore.

Could not think of a harder left turn from excitement to total deflation, the handful of delays definitely didn't help either.

It's like the 'most overrated' threats where people just start listing every well received game ever made.

Since all the projects announced with a new system get a lot of extra hype, 1/4th of them eventually fall in this category where they are remembered mostly for their development than for the games themselves.

Never played Brute Force but goddamn does it look stupid as hell.

Here's a recent one:

I honestly thought it came out years ago and no one cared, but googling just now reveals it was cancelled.

Vanguard:Saga of Heroes was helmed by the genius behind Everquest and would unabashedly be so hardcore, featuring immense amount of contents, factions play, and progression systems outside of combat, GODDAMNIT

I recall a lot of magazine hype for that PS1 RPG Shadow Madness (Crave Entertainment's "FFVII killer").

Game was mind-numbingly mediocre and I never see it mentioned for any reason.

That game still had my favorite healer in an MMO the Blood Mage or Priest or whatever. Had some great ideas, too bad it seemed like they couldn't quite 100% execute on them.

Let's take this all the way back to 1993:

latest

Eternal Champions was a huge one hype-wise, coming right after the six-button Genesis/Mega Drive pad had shipped for SFII:SCE. And... it was such a wet fart. Clearly, it had an art budget, but the fighting was laggy and sloppy, with shitty button detection; the art design was way too cluttered to see any of the action; every character had a stupid look and stupider concept; and the sound and music were the exact abomination that gave MD/Gen music a bad rap for years.

Spore.

There was SO MUCH HYPE around Spore. People completely bought into Will Wright's "SimEverything" pitch.

Then the game came out, turned out to be a lot less ambitious than originally presumed, and was fairly quickly forgotten.

Haze, for the PS3. That game was hype to heaven and back due to the jet pack and "go anywhere" fighting combat style.

Then it was released and it was shit. Hype died off and the rest is history

Telltale's Walking Dead series was hyped after it GOTY wins in 2012 but the series faded into obscurity rather quickly. I think the novelty of the choices got too repetitive for people. Many people aren't looking forward to "The Final Season".

Dragon Age Inquisition also faded quite quickly after the Witcher 3, but I would argue the games have different strengths.

Shit, Telltale games in general. They had some big titles early on...three new seasons of Sam & Max, a Monkey Island revival, Back to the Future Jurassic Park titles and even a friggin' Wallace & Gromit game. (That I didn't get to play, now it's gone forever.)

lol nope, this game still has a vibrant community on reddit. there's an new ARG going on right now leading up to yet another big update. You being ignorant of the massive improvements doesn't mean the game is forgotten, far from it.

Peak players on Steam was less than 1,500 yesterday, which should see biggest weekly numbers as it is a weekend. I know there is a PS4 release but I think it's very much forgotten for a game with over 1 million sales.

I'm pretty sure Spore will always be remembered as the #1 example of a game failing to deliver on it's own hype.
