Finally updated and installed everything. This thing is slick. Harder to use with one hand than the 7 was but I'll get used to it in time.

After using this thing for a few hours, I honestly don't know how anyone could struggle too much to get used to the absence of the home button. I know people accustom to changes differently. But I was completely comfortable swiping up to go home and getting to the app switcher right out of the box.

If you just imagine each app as being a card you can pull out and swipe between, it all just sort of works how you want it to in your head. The screen being so responsive really goes a long way towards achieving that feel.

Every time I want to use the home button, I see the bar at the bottom and just swipe instead. I only miss the button when pulling the phone straight out of my pocket and instinctually trying to press the button to unlock it.

Hot damn, that's a really good tip. So far I thought you had to hold the finger on the screen after swiping up from the bottom on the screen till the switcher pops ups.

Coming from the 6S this thing is such an experience. Very happy with the upgrade. Super happy Face ID just replaces Touch ID and there is no special need to update each and every app to support it.

But

It'd be nice if we could get on the ball and get these apps to support the X resolution and the notch. Seeing gigantic letterboxed apps is just such a waste of space.

Yep left works too.

I've not used ios in a while, is there any way to share to direct message with Twitter using ios share?

Oh that feels good. Made me say "yass" our loud.

I'm an idiot.

Why not just swipe straight up though? It's faster.

Did you try the low-angle method on the second faceID setup step? I was able to increase the angle it works at a little doing that. It's not huge but it helped.

Low-angle method? How do you mean, just tilting your head at more extreme angles?
After I tried to do that it seems like it is trying to detect at bigger angles, but the authentication fails every time.

So I got my phone today and was supposed to get a trade-in kit with it. Is that shipped separately or was it supposed to be part of the package? I never got one.

Straight up you have to hold for a sec. Swipe it's instant.

Is there really no way to change website scaling? Everything is just way too gigantic.

I tried chrome and safari. Don't see any options?

One thing driving me crazy is the tap to wake then swipe to unlock. I keep tapping twice or swiping twice (swipe won't wake it). Turned on raise-to-wake and its a little better though

Either way, just something to get used to

Yeah, I wish the swipe gesture counted as waking it. I've settled on a quick tap with one finger, followed immediately by swiping up with another finger.

On the second step hold the phone lower and have it look up from underneath your head sort of like it would if it were on a desk or table.

More impressions.

I've now had the phone through the day and it's now 7pm.

In portrait mode, control center is very difficult to reach. Reachability is also way more of a hassle because if you swipe down in the "home area", and there happens to be an element on the screen that you can touch around that area, and you accidentally touch it, it won't work.

Video apps are creating these "software bezels" on the sides of the video in landscape, making the usable area about the size of an iPhone 5. It completely kills the purpose of the big screen. These are optimized apps. YouTube and Netflix.

Animoji is super fun. I imagine using it in the future.

Face ID is noticeably slow but better than Touch ID. It's slow in that you notice it's working, which is annoying. The ideal Face ID would be invisible. Click, tap, swipe, who cares. You have no idea Face ID tried to authenticate you -- completely invisible. That would be ideal and I suspect attainable soon enough. Here's hoping it happens in two years.

side by side comparison between looking at resetera on my pixel 2 xl vs iphone x (from the shitty camera on my surface). Both phones roughly have the same vertical viewing display area, sure the X is a little skinnier, but damn why is the text and ui area gigantic on iphone? Can't even fit avatar and text on same line. Why isn't there a 'smaller scale mode' option like on iphone plus models?

I tried this, but didn't improve. It's on the desk, I look at it, the lock shakes. Maybe I'm farther than the 20 inches Apple recommends, but I'm not hunched over my desk when I'm working. Will try again later.

Double-tap on the video to make it full-screen with no bezels.

Agreed on Control Center, feel like it was fundamentally the wrong choice to put it up there.

Just noticed that the sensor area is touch sensitive kinda. You can double tap to scroll to top or slide down for notifications.

Also space Grey phone looks good. No clue why ppl hating on it. The dark frame is great.

Finally got it all set up. Coming from a 6 Plus that was slowly dying from Touch Disease, this thing is amazing.

I notice that because the phone shows true blacks, try to open an image in Twitter, the black background now will show dark brown because Twitter is not using true black on their tweeted image backgrounds . Will irritate folks a lot

Hmmmm impressions sound good, maybe I will trade in my 6+ for one. But think I'll wait until they are easier to get and launch hype is done.

If by natural you mean piss yellow — sure.
I like my whites pure or a touch on the cool side.

True Tone was way too warm for my blood. I'll use night shift for night reading.

It's waaay warmer on the X than my 7+ and iPad Pro. Really seems to undermine the idea of true tone. The Verge asked apple and they said it's just that the X has a better true tone light sensor though

The iPhone 8 I use for work has a useful True Tone. That apple excuse doesn't sound right to me. I think they just need to dial it in on the OLED.

Wow. Horrible news. I had to exchange my iPhone X.

I thought the phone was flawless but turned out I was wrong. I didn't notice the imperfection/defect until it got dark and turned on the lights - turns out there was a long smile faced smudge on the inside of the iPhone screen. It kind of looked like this - https://f01.justanswer.com/JACUSTOMER9x83yrp5/2011-01-10_231744_img_3037.jpg

I took it in and the Apple staff were speechless - they couldn't believe it. I had 4 people look at it, one thought it was a scratch on the top part but the tech guy came over and confirmed it wasn't on the top of the screen. They tried cleaning it with a microfiber and of course, nothing happened.

They swapped mine for one of the two replacement units they had on hand for repairs - obviously completely brand new but it was in a different box.

Bit of a stressful day, but mad shout out to Apple for helping me, absolutely no issues, I was kind of expecting them to say I damaged it but thankfully they agreed it was a defect.

I'm loving the X so far. This thing is so fast and beautiful to look at! Was worried about the screen size but it looks a lot bigger up close and you really forget all about the notch after awhile.

It'll happen. Just like with Touch ID, it was very slow in the first iteration and by the time it was on the iPhone 6S, it was lighting fast.

I can't stand how yellow it is even iPad Pro. If X is even more yellow than that...lol, screw that crap. I don't understand why Apple just don't let people adjust neutral color temperature manually, and the maybe make True Tone work off of that initial setting. They should realize this is an individual preference for people, much like the amount of brightness.

Forgot animoji were a thing until reading the last few posts of this thread. Needless to say I have now spammed my unicorn self at most of my friends, so all's right with the world.

Initial impressions: love the screen; can't wait for apps to be optimised for it. Face ID is less convenient than Touch ID. Awkward double-click of the lock button to make purchases instead of one smooth print scan? Picking up my phone, then swiping up from the bottom of the screen rather than just picking up my phone with my thumb on the sensor? It adds nothing, and is a definite step back. But it's not a major step back, and I'm happy to sacrifice a little functionality for the glorious screen. Feels like so much extra real estate coming from my 7.

Bit less easy to use one-handed, but I love the new reachability gesture. In fact, I love all the new gestures, except swipe down from top right for control centre. That should be a swipe up and right. L shaped gestures are the future, and I need more of them to be introduced.

But I came for the screen, and am not disappointed. Don't miss the home button at all - in fact it already feels antiquated. I imagine touch ID will return under the screen to augment Face ID next year or the year after though.
