This whole episode was a huge letdown. It was a long drawn out melodramatic episode that didn't know how/when to transition between the Carol/Morgan side of the story and the Rick/Carl side. Literally like every 30 seconds going back and fourth, it was jarring and just showed how awful the writing and pacing was.

Carl, for all the faults that they wrote him in the first half of the shows run had grown to become one of the most interesting characters of the show imo. I'd much rather have seen Rick exist the show and have Carl's character develop and move forward to become a leader.

This show seems to have devolved into using the trope of "needing" a major character to die for the season finale/opening so much now, it's just weak writing all around. Especially because the deaths don't feel earned/natural, they are drawn out, overly melodramatic and they seem to relish in making them last as long as possible with the characters constantly spouting exposition over it all.

The showrunners are really running this show into the ground with these past few seasons. Just to think they had Frank Darabont running this show at one point and instead of keeping that going they've let it get to this point.

I don't think Carl the character was bad. I think Chandler Riggs was a horrific actor until maybe the last couple of seasons when he got older and become a better, but still not good at all actor. Understandable considering he was only a child for much of the show so you can't expect too much. But, yeah. I've always thought that his parents must either know someone or are in the business themselves and got him the role as a favor.

Yeah the way they have been treating weapons and the shooting scenes in the last couple of seasons have killed the aura of quality and grittiness that the show had in the beginning.

I didn't expect anything to change after the season started, it's still a mess, how are they still jumping all over the place. I thought Carl was gone then oh, one more speech and oh hey Rick, found a hill and tree. Slog is an understatement.

Saved the episode but haven't watched it. I saw a couple moments of it while putting something on.

Was it any good? I'm curious.

Not really. They drag out Carl's death to the point the dialogue becomes repetitive to hear and it becomes boring to watch. The only interesting thing going on in the other story arc of the episode is with the Savior lieutenant and whether or not he decides to turn against Negan or not.

A very sub-par mid season premiere.

Not surprising given how bad this show has become. Same shit, different location.

The song in the beggining of the episode during the Carl montage made me mute my TV. Unbelievably awful.

It's literally the worst series regarding music I've ever watched. Sub-par country that tries to sound deep and meaningful. Trash, like everything else about this show really. Hate-watching at its finest.

Oh no someone reminded me those letters exist. Carl's voice over while someone is crying reading said letter will be nice and cheap way to fill time so I'm dreading the rest of the season now, prove me wrong show please.

Yep. For the entire time I've been watching this show I've been wishing it were HBO or one of the other premium networks that made it. The subpar acting from 90% of the characters, the lack of attention to detail, the awful writing. Can't help but imagine what could be done with this setting with better show runners.

I've been watching it since the beggining and there are still a handful of characters I kinda care about so I can't just stop watching.

It was horribly implemented in the show and cut the serious tone they were trying to establish. Truly bizarre

I thought it fit perfectly, to be honest. That montage was meant to show us that Carl was hopeful despite knowing he was about to die. It felt like an appropriate song.

While my mother waters plants
My father loads his gun
He says death will give us back to god
Just like the setting sun
Its return to the lonesome ocean
And then they splashed into the deep blue sea
It was a wonderful splash

You won't see me saying many positive things about The Walking Dead these days but I really enjoyed the song choice.

The show would've been shit on HBO too I imagine. It's just that the comics are shit, and the show follows the comics. Of course it also lacks any kind of talent, but I don't think there's a way to make a soap opera with zombies actual TV quality.

It wasn't the lyrics that made it shit, it was the actual singing. The vocalist sounds high school talent show quality.

The show reminds me Sons of Anarchy in a lot of ways (manipulative plot twists and shitty montages being at the top of the list), and like with Sons I think TWD would have been very fun trash as a Showtime series. Like the first couple years of Dexter.

Negan's story will never be wrapped up. They will keep going back to that well of making him look strong until he finally wins the big one at Wrestlemania and we respect him.
Oh wait a second... I got him confused with Roman Reigns there. My bad.
He basically is the Roman Reigns of TWD in the show and comic tbh

I can't decide if I want to watch this season or not. It's become such a slow drag since the Governor arc.

I been thinking about it and I feel like Carl's death was completely unnecessary and it would have been alright to see him make it to the end, what purpose does it serve for the sake of the story? So Rick can spare Negan? Stupid.

Truthfully, the pudding scene is one of my favorites in the entire series, though it's probably because he doesn't talk so not much acting involved.

I don't know. You look at a show like Game of Thrones and even the child actors are mostly great, nevermind the adults. Better than most of the adults on TWD in fact. I feel like HBO casting much better actors awould improve things.

Some of it isn't the actors' fault though, it must be said. When the writing is so corny and at times amateurish there's only so much they can do.

Fear got better in later seasons.
Can anyone second this opinion? I was a regular watcher until just past the half way point of last season and finally dropped it. I felt it was much worse than mainline Walking Dead. Unless it picked up dramatically at the end of last season, I wouldn't say it is worth your time.

Edit: Also is there anyone in this thread that actually enjoys this show? All I see is post after post about how awful this show is which makes me wonder why those people even watch it. As for myself I still enjoy the show. It may not be a great show but it is entertaining and not as bad as one would think by reading this thread. I'm not even close to giving it up like I did with Fear.

I enjoy it.

And if you didn't like the first half of the last season of Fear then you won't like the rest, it's more or less the same throughout. I thought it was pretty great though, so if you still enjoy TWD, it's weird you don't like Fear because the previous season was better than anything we've gotten from TWD in a few years.

After seeing Part 1 of this season. I think I'll skip this until next season.

I can't believe they are stretching this Negan arc

This seems very bad considering what everyone knew the episode would be about.

I mean, that's a bad drop from last year in general.

'Walking Dead' Season 8 Midseason Premiere Is Show's Lowest-Rated Ever

"The Walking Dead" Season 8 midseason premiere continued to suffer the ratings woes that have plagued the rest of the season.

According to Nielsen Live+Same Day data, Sunday's premiere drew a 3.6 rating in adults 18-49 and 8.3 million viewers. That is up slightly from the midseason finale ratings (3.4, 7.9 million) in December, but was still the lowest-rated "Walking Dead" midseason premiere to date.

The drop off comes despite the fact that a major character departed the show during the episode after revealing a walker bite in the midseason finale.

As it currently stands, the midseason premieres rank as follows (by demo rating):

Season 4 (2014)– 8.2 rating, 15.8 million viewers

Season 5 (2015)– 8.0 rating, 15.6 million viewers

Season 6 (2016)– 6.8 rating, 13.7 million viewers

Season 3 (2013)– 6.1 rating, 12.3 million

Season 7 (2017)– 5.7 rating, 12 million viewers

Season 2 (2012)– 4.2 rating, 8.1 million viewers

Season 8 (2018)– 3.6 rating, 8.3 million viewers

The show had gotten to the point where it's running out of steam even during, for all intent and purposes, 8 episode seasons.

I wouldn't be shocked if they end the show after the conclusion of this story line.

Please kill Rick off by the end of the season, that last shot of the episode gives me hope that they'll end this train wreck with Rick's death and aftermath in S9.
Andrew Lincoln deserves better.
So did Chandler Riggs.

They fucked up by killing Glenn.

Negan is such an evil villain, but I quickly got tired of hearing him be so evil and so badass. I've got nothing against JDM - I think he's a wonderful actor, but the character and writing has put me off the show.

And if Negan is pardoned... man, fuck that! He killed Glenn. He deserves to die.

As for Carl... good riddance. Again, the writing did him no favors and I'm glad that he's gone.

Glenn, though... he's terribly missed.

You shouldn't have hope for that.

It's not happening.

It probably won't, but I do hope it does.
Carl's death does nothing but take away from the story and I doubt they're going to salvage this. Gimple turned this already mediocre but sometimes great show to a cheap novella.

I'm still salty, this episode makes it even worse.

I think it's time to set up an end for the show but they're certainly not killing Rick off before the final episode.

Ratings are dropping, cast members are leaving. They need to wind it down before both of those issues become really bad.

We lost Carl, we're losing Morgan in a few episodes, we might lose Maggie and I'd be shocked if Danai stays with the show much longer given her recent box office success.

Morgan is moving over to Fear The Walking Dead but who really knows how long he'll be there. He could presumably return whenever.

Nobody seems to know what the status of Danai Gurira's contract is. I'm not sure if Black Panther is really going to move the needle that much, given that she's a supporting character.
