This whole episode was a huge letdown. It was a long drawn out melodramatic episode that didn't know how/when to transition between the Carol/Morgan side of the story and the Rick/Carl side. Literally like every 30 seconds going back and fourth, it was jarring and just showed how awful the writing and pacing was.
Carl, for all the faults that they wrote him in the first half of the shows run had grown to become one of the most interesting characters of the show imo. I'd much rather have seen Rick exist the show and have Carl's character develop and move forward to become a leader.
This show seems to have devolved into using the trope of "needing" a major character to die for the season finale/opening so much now, it's just weak writing all around. Especially because the deaths don't feel earned/natural, they are drawn out, overly melodramatic and they seem to relish in making them last as long as possible with the characters constantly spouting exposition over it all.
The showrunners are really running this show into the ground with these past few seasons. Just to think they had Frank Darabont running this show at one point and instead of keeping that going they've let it get to this point.
